There's a little bit of cheating going on here, in that Bobby McF. has to deliberately lead the audience to the sub-mediant (i.e., the minor third below the starting note) by singing the interval to them before he goes there. Otherwise, the audience "getting" to the mediant and dominant without any help is fairly expected; it's a bit tricky to find an audience that hasn't heard the major scale, or just the pentatonic scale extracted from it!
A pity the audience couldn't cope with the interval of the major third when BMcF tries to split the difference over the supertonic!
I wonder how it would have gone with some far away Polynesian or African tribe that hadn't been exposed to 'Do-Re-Mi' in 'The Sound Of Music'. It'd certainly be an interesting experiment!
As for coping with the interval, it's understandable that they were confused from being given an entirely new signal. Had he done so again he may have gotten a more musical response.
