Anya stood beside D'Hoffryn and watched as the blonde teenager wept on a park bench. Although she had seen the sight a thousand times, something felt different but she couldn't quite put her finger on it. The girl had slept with a classmate and lost her virginity only to have him drop her the next day; so the scenario was nothing unique. Yet, D'Hoffryn himself had come to watch with her and to supervise her. There were only two reasons why he would personally oversee a case. If she had been failing which wasn't the case, only last week she managed to incite a murder/suicide and to get a small country invaded by a rival nation. Or if he was considering making her a vengeance demon.
Sensing her thoughts, D'Hoffryn corrected, "No Anyanka. She will not be a vengeance demon. But I have seen signs and I believe she may be destined to make one of the great wishes of eternal damnation."
Turning to her mentor, Anya gasped in surprise. The great wishes were something of legend. Only once or twice in a thousand years would a mortal make one of the eternal wishes. A wish under the right circumstances, worded in a way that even the impossible would be made possible and ultimately they would damn themselves to an unending cycle of torment. It was a symphony of pain to wreak upon the world. If the mortal truly were to make the great wish of eternal damnation, Anyanka would become legendary and surpass all but a few of the greatest vengeance demons of all time!
Anya watched anxiously and tried to think of how best to handle what would possibly be the greatest wish of her career. D'Hoffryn signaled her and they moved into the mortal plane behind a tree near the bench where the girl sat.
"I want him to die," she said. "I wish he would die screaming in agony."
Nothing special yet, Anya thought with disappointment. The girl stood up and walked to a cluster of rose bushes in the park. D'Hoffryn had to remain in hiding, but Anya moved nearer. The expression on the girl's face changed from one of sorrow to one of intensity as she plucked a rose from one of the bushes. Her fingers pricked by the thorns, were bleeding on the rose as she looked at it. Anya's senses went into overdrive, blood had magical properties and it's presence might improve the odds of the girl making the wish that would make her career.
"I wish I had someone to love me," the blond began. "Not just anyone or any love. I want a man who will bring me roses like this. I want- I want perfect love. He won't care about anything but me."
Finally making an her presence known Anya smiled and lied, "I've heard if you hold a red rose like that and describe the man of your dreams and end it with I wish it so, that your wish comes true."
Vengeance demons couldn't make someone fall in love, but in the case of a great wish of eternal damnation, she would have the power to find the girl's true love and bind it in darkness for eternity. Anya waited as the girl studied her and hoped D'Hoffryn wouldn't end up being disappointed.
The girl shrugged, "Why not?"
"Go on. If nothing else you'll feel better," Anya suggested. Pain was coming in waves off the girl, not just over the boy. She felt the girl's agony over losing her mother and her father leaving her with strangers. Thankfully she'd caught the girl's pain over the boy instead of Callie with her daddy issues. Impatience screamed inside Anyanka but she forced it aside and held her breath.
"I want perfect love. He'll bring me roses like this one and punish anyone who hurts me, even the tiniest bit. He won't care about unimportant things like what the rest of the world thinks. In fact he'll show the world how much he adores me. Handsome, god-like. And I'll be his goddess. No matter what he'll always love me and only me forever and always. We'll be each other's very existence."
D'Hoffryn appeared silently behind the girl and Anya knew from his expression that the selfish wish and bloodied flower were all that was needed. Now if only the girl would finish her wish!
"Nothing will keep him from me. No one will ever stand between us. I'll be his very reason for living," she continued.
"Sounds perfect," Anya beamed. Then encouraged, "Now say you wish it and prince charming will be yours in no time."
The girl blushed suddenly aware of all she had said. Dropping the bloodied rose, she started to walk away but under her breath murmured, "I wish it so. Oh God how I wish it were so. Even if it cost me my soul, I want it so badly. I don't care what it costs. I wish it."
Behind her, Anyanka's face shifted and in a booming voice, she said, "Done."
Before the girl turned around, Anya and D'Hoffryn were gone. Returning to the demon plane, they were greeted by a number of vengeance demons who felt the surge of power and wanted to hear about the great wish of damnation.
************
Samantha sat in the park and cried. She didn't want Bailey to try and comfort her or worse for Jack to see her tears on one of the VCTF's cameras. Jack had killed another victim and she was forced to face that another person had died because of her. If she hated him, it would make her burden easier to bear. But there was no black and white with Jack and as much as she wanted to hate him, the emotion never came- just a strange sense of sadness and incompleteness.
Frustrated with the situation, she demanded angrily, "Why me? Why did Jack have to pick me?"
Anya had been watching and decided it was time to enjoy the triumph of one of the hi-lights of her career. And clearly Samantha hadn't figured things out. Maybe she should give her a little push in Jack's direction, they would have wonderful orgasms together and that would cheer them both up, she thought. Moving into the mortal plane she stood behind Sam in the same guise she had worn when the wish was made.
Caught up in her flurry of emotional outpouring, the blonde didn't see Anya approach and repeated her question again.
"Why you?" Anya repeated and laughed.
Startled, Samantha looked up. There was something familiar about the teenage girl who stood before her, but she couldn't put her finger on it. Her guard up as she narrowed her eyes and said, "I know you."
"Of course you do, I helped make your wish come true."
"What wish?"
"When you were 16 and you had your heart broken by that senior. You were in the park and wished for perfect love. I helped make your wish come true."
Samantha was startled but bit out in a bitter tone, "Yeah well if that's the case, you failed. My husband died and I certainly don't have any perfect love."
"Don't you?" Anya laughed and sat down beside her. "You wished for a love who would bring you roses with blood on them-"
"I never said that!"
"You said roses like the one in your hand. You'd been pricked on the thorns and it had blood on it. You also wanted him to punish anyone who hurts you which he does."
Growing suspicious, Sam demanded, "Who the hell are you? This is one of Jack's sick games isn't it?!"
Ignoring her accusation, Anya continued, "You wanted to be the only thing he cared about. And you wanted him to show the world how much he adores you. I'd say he's done an impressive job."
"You expect me to believe you made Jack fall in love with me?"
Sitting down and chatting happily, Anya clarified, "Oh gracious no! Vengeance demons can't make someone fall in love. No, Jack was always going to be your true love. But thanks to your wish he'll kill over and over for you for the rest of your life."
"The rest of my life," the blonde echoed.
"Actually, it's going to go on for eternity," Anya explained cheerfully. "You'll both die and he'll love you in the same perfect way the next lifetime and the one after. Your wish was for eternal love."
"There's no such thing. And I must be losing my mind to sit here and listen to this," Sam snapped.
Unfazed, Anya pointed out, "You know you wouldn't be so cranky if you had more orgasms. If you asked Jack nicely I'm sure he would-"
"What?!"
"Well, you seem very uptight," the vengeance demon pointed out. "Since Jack is your true love you ought to-"
"He's not my true love!"
"Yes, he is!"
"Well, even if he were, there's not one thing he has to offer me except for pain and death."
"I bet he could give you lots of orgasms," Anya suggested helpfully. "I've peeked at him and he has a very nice penis. It's big and-"
Samantha covered her ears and screamed as she leapt to her feet. She wanted to run but the girl knew so much about the wish she'd made on that day. It was insanity to listen but she couldn't bring herself to leave.
"Sam, haven't you ever wondered why you never really loved Tom?" Anya asked softly.
"I loved him-" she started to protest. Then sank down on the bench beside the strange girl. She was so tired of lying and struggling. Tom had been a wonderful man and she had cared about him but it was never the all consuming emotion she imagined love would be. Shaking her head sadly she sighed, "Maybe I didn't love him the way I wanted to."
"Who is the first and last person you think of each day?"
"I-"
"Jack is. You hate yourself because you care about him. Isn't that it?"
Samantha didn't answer but she'd begun to cry once more. Anya waited impatiently for her to answer. Humans were so stubborn! If Sam was going to spend an eternity being loved by Jack she may as well learn to enjoy it. Last week when she'd checked on the progress of the pair, Anya had gotten to see him naked and it seemed sad that a man that good looking was going to waste! The blonde mortal still was crying and Anya took her purse from her and opened it. Taking the cell phone, she focused her powers and a number came to her. Punching the number in, she handed the phone to Sam and stood up.
"All you have to do is press send and Jack will answer. He was always meant to be yours, I only changed the length of time. Eternity is long time, Samantha. Think about it," Anya told her then vanished.
Sitting alone, Samantha couldn't believe what she'd just seen and heard. The wish she made in her youth echoed in her mind and she considered the words of the mysterious girl who had disappeared. Eternity was a long time. Drying her eyes, Samantha's finger trembled over the send button then pressed it and brought the phone to her ear...
