Summary: Sharon comes to a painful realization.

Sharon had been looking forward to meeting Jack for several months and when he picked her up she wasn't disappointed. Trim and good looking, he'd worn an expensive suit with casual elegance and lavished money on her. As he supervised her shopping he made her add a few purchases which made no sense to Sharon. The conservative suits weren't her at all, but Jack clearly knew more about wealth and taste than Sharon did, so she kept quiet as he added them to the pile.

Later when he took her to a salon, Sharon felt a sense of uneasiness when Jack pulled the photo of a woman out and told the stylist to make her look like that. What was wrong with her the way she was? Sharon wondered. However she'd kept silent and allowed the transformation. It was a little disappointing when he didn't sleep with her, but Sharon had dismissed it that it was part of Jack's being a gentlemen.

When he took her to New Orleans and had ordered her to help him kill the man at the library, Sharon had little hesitation. While his letters had drawn her to him before her release, seeing him and being in his presence had made her fall hopelessly in love with him. Even though she suspected Jack might be her downfall, Sharon knew it would be one hell of a ride.

When they got back to Atlanta from New Orleans, it was the first time Jack had sex with her. Sharon was rather shocked, Jack who seemed so old fashioned had slammed most of a bottle of Jack Daniel's and thrown her on the bed. At first he'd been very intense, pushing her panties aside and shoving his large cock deep inside her pounding her hard. His eyes were wild and although Sharon came from his savage thrusts, she felt used and almost angry.

It was later when the alcohol had taken the full effect, that Sharon discovered something far worse. When he kissed her tenderly and told her he loved her, Sharon had been in heaven. Every touch took on such a gentle and arousing nature, that she felt the most emotionally vulnerable she ever had while in bed with a man. As she was writhing underneath Jack, delirious with pleasure, he moaned the words which shattered her illusion, "My Samantha."

A few days later after Jack had her fly to San Francisco to kill the Sikorski woman there while he killed another by the same name in Maine. When she placed the mask on the dead woman's face as Jack had instructed, Sharon wondered just who she was and remembered the picture from the salon. But if she'd killed the woman in representation then surely Jack didn't love the woman, did he?

The next day, Jack was at his computer looking at photos of that woman and Sharon demanded, "Who is she?"

Again Jack didn't say her name, but murmured, "The past. The future. Now go to back to sleep."

Sharon didn't like the sound of that. Although Jack didn't come out and say it he implied Sharon was the present and that it was only temporary. She tried to entice Jack to join her in bed and he ignored her. So Sharon tried to kiss him, her lips barely touched him and he growled with displeasure, wrapped his hand around her throat and pushed her away. In a huff, she'd stomped off across the room and sulked.

Several hours later Sharon hesitantly walked up to Jack, he was still sitting in front of the computer screen, staring at the woman's photo. He'd been drinking heavily and Sharon wondered if he would tell her who the woman was. Barely above a whisper, Sharon asked who the woman was.

"My Samantha," Jack whispered reverently.

When he turned his head toward Sharon, he gave her a loving look and she knew he wasn't seeing her. Jack stood and carried her to bed. Her clothing was stripped off slowly and he aroused her lovingly. Again Jack moaned, "Samantha" over and over. As he filled Sharon and took her to the zenith of pleasure, her heart ached and she'd never felt emptier. It was at that moment she knew he was using her. Clinging to Jack, Sharon hoped vainly she could make him see her and love her instead. If she loved him enough maybe he could love her instead of using her as a substitute for Samantha, Sharon thought anxiously.
