Chapter 30

“Scared, Mikey.” Alex mumbles tugging on the corner of Michael's shirt. Michael looked down and smiled softly. They were outside the day centre and Alex had been quiet all day.

“I know, but remember it's just for an hour and I'm going to be right there, and then we're going to the shops and you'll get some nice things, and then the cinema. And then tonight you can phone your mom and tell her everything you've done today.”

Alex looks at him and nods slowly. “Promise me you'll stay?”

“I promise.” Michael crosses his finger over his heart. “Like Russell.”

“Russell.” Alex nods and hugs him tight.

They walk into the main room and Alex gasps when he sees it. The whole room looks like a room full of adventure. There's an art corner with paints, and drawing equipment lined up. Then there's an inside climbing area, a huge garden with swings and slides, and a ball pit in the corner.

“Look there's bricks and games!” Alex says looking up at Michael with awe in his eyes.

“Go and play.” Michael whispers. “I'm going to sit here.” he points to the chairs where a few other parents were.

“Okay.” Alex says unsure. Michael squeezes his hand and tells him that it's okay and watches as Alex rushes off to play with the bricks.

“I had so much fun, Mikey!” Alex grins jumping up and down as they walked out. Michel had told him when the hour was up and Alex had insisted that he stay for another hour because he had just started playing with his new friend - Ned. Michael smiled, he'd had a feeling that Alex would say this and he went and sat back down. Alex had played with Ned for three hours, going from the bricks, to the art corner, to the climbing frames inside and then out. When they had to part they had both cried and Michael had swapped numbers with Ned's Mom, assuring them both that they could play together soon.

“I'm glad. Now, are we going shopping?”

“Yes. Because you said that I could get treats.” Alex grins up at him. “Do I still get some?”

“You can get whatever you like.” Michael says softly.

“A rocket?”

“Why do you want a rocket?”

“To go to space. Duh.” Alex giggles. Michael chuckles, rolling his eyes.

Alex threw himself on his bed grinning. Michael had brought him a lot of new things to play with. He had an electric car set that Michael was going to set up for them to play with in the morning, he had new books and colours, and Michael had brought him new clothes and shoes. “Remember the new clothes are for when we go to see your Mom in California?”

“I remember. I'll keep them safe.”

“Good boy.” Michael smiles softly. Alex sits up and watches him. “You okay Alex?”

“I just want to say thank you.” Alex whispers, he gets up from the bed and wraps his arms around Michael tight. “I'm so happy I have you.”

“Happy I have you too.” Michael whispers.

“I'm going to read in the garden now.” Alex says and jumps up, grabbing one of his new books and rushing out. Michael sighs, he sits on the window ledge watching as Alex gets himself comfortable on the trampoline. Alex looks up at Michael and grins, he pats next to him gesturing for Michael to come too. Michael grabs his book from his room before making his way downstairs to Alex, where they'd spend the rest of the evening bouncing and reading before bed time.
