Chapter 32
Alex sighed tapping his knees as he watches the movie. He had the volume turned down so that he didn't wake up Michael, but he knew all the words anyway so it didn't really bother him. He mouthed along to every word and smiled to himself. Normally he'd have Michael saying the words with him to. He looked over at Michael and frowned. His face looked all wet. He got up and walked to the kitchen, coming back in quickly with a cloth. Kneeling beside him he took Michael's hand, frowning when Michael didn't move his fingers. Michael always held his hand, even when he was sleeping.
“Mikey?” Alex whispers, dabbing Michael's face with the cloth softly. When there was no response he said his name a little louder, “Michael?” When there was nothing Alex started to panic. “Why wont you wake up?” He whispers, shaking him a little. When there was nothing he could feel his tears fall from his eyes. His mom always told him if someone was hurt to call 911 and ask for an ambulance. He didn't know whether or not Michael was hurt but he wasn't waking up and he didn't think that was good. The sleep bunnies never make you not wake up. He grabbed the phone and pressed the number. When he heard the voice ask him what he needed he begged for an ambulance.
“Mikey wont wake up!” He sobbed down the line, his hand still shaking him. He tried to answer all the questions the operator asked him but all he could manage to say was 'Mikey wont wake up' and repeated his address over and over again.
“Wake up Mikey!” Alex sobbed. “The magic medics are coming and they'll help you.” Alex sobbed, the phone still glued to his ear.
Within seven minutes the sirens of the ambulance wailed down the street. Alex rushed to the door, he didn't go outside though. Michael told him not to. “He wont wake up!” He cried causing the two medics to rush over to him.
“Slow down,” The man said. “My name's Leo, can you tell me yours?”
“Mikey wont wake up.” Alex sobbed, he grabbed hold of Leo's shirt and pulled him into the front room where Michael was still laying on the sofa. “Make him wake up!”
The other medic rushed over to him, Alex didn't understand what she was doing, and Leo kept on trying to talk to him but all he could repeat was make Mikey wake up. “Don't want him like Pikachu.”
“He's got a fever. He's burning up, we'll take him in.” The second medic said.
“You want to come and ride in the ambulance?” Alex shakes his head. “We're going to take Mikey in, you have to come too okay?”
“Mikey said I can't leave the house whilst he's still asleep.” Alex said looking up at the kind hearted medic with wide eyes.
“You're going to be with Mikey though.” Leo said softly. Alex nodded his head slowly.
“Promise he'll wake up?” Alex whispers. “Not like Pikachu?”
“He's not going to be like Pikachu. I promise.” Alex watched him closely, and started to cry more. “Shh, it's okay.”
“It's not true! You didn't do a Russell it's not a real promise.” Alex sobbed rushing over to Michael.
“Hey look,” Leo called. Alex turned his head and looked at the medic slowly. “I promise.” he crossed his finger over his heart. “A real promise.”
Alex nodded and stepped back as the medics put Michael onto a stretcher. “Where's your Mom?”
“She's in California with my Nanny. She's not well. Me...Going to see them soon.” Alex sniffles.
“And your dad?”
“Dad left long time ago.” Alex kicks at his feet. “Just me and Mikey and Mommy.”
“Okay, how old are you?”
“I...Sixteen...but...but I have...” Alex bit his lip. “I have...My head doesn't work like a sixteen year old.” He whispered looking down. “Mikey looks after me.”
“Okay, well how do you feel about looking after Mikey with us for a bit?” Leo asked.
“I...I can do that.” Alex nods. “Should...Should I get some of Mikey's things for the hospital?”
“That would be helpful. We're going to get him into the ambulance okay, when you're ready you just come out there okay.”
“Kay.” Alex whispers. Leo nods and smiles softly at him. “Alex.”
“Pardon?”
“My name. I...Alex.” he whispers before running up to Michael's room.
