[Character Name]: Magnus Bane, Magnificent High Warlock of Brooklyn
[Canon]: Mortal Instruments
[Point Taken from Canon] End of City of Ashes
[Age] 300? 800? Some cute number in between.
[Gender] Male
[Sexual Orientation] Fabulously gay (this century)
[Eye Color] Green-gold (with cat-like pupils)
[Hair Color] Black
[Height] Taller than average. 6'2''? 6'3''?
[Other] Thin, lightly tattooed, hair artfully spiked and occasionally colored
[Clothing] Designer suits on a good day. Tight shirt, low-rise jeans and a sparkly belt on a lazy day. No clothes whatsoever to bed.
[Background] Much of Magnus’s past - without the unpublished deleted scenes - is mostly conjecture. More is known about his present, however - that he is a High Warlock of Brooklyn, host to lavish Downworlder parties, and making a profit with his magic (healing, casting spells, and opening portals).
He is described as tall and thin and vaguely Asian in appearance. He’s a slave to fashion - with a memorable wardrobe change for every occasion. He also has a fondness for glitter, wearing rings, and defying gravity via hair gel.
The little we do know is what he revealed of his past in Chapter 12 of City of Bones, to the small group of Shadowhunters, including his later love interest, Alec Lightwood. His mother hung herself when she realized that he was only half human, and his father tried to drown him. Magnus reacted defensively and burned him with his power. Needless to say, it was a troubled childhood - not difficult to imagine why he might want to forget the distant past.
He is first introduced by the Silent Brothers - who discover he has signed the repressed memories (and mind) of Clary Fray with his signature. This leads the shadowhunters to seek him out at a party he is hosting at his Williamsburg loft.
From the night of the party - when he first meets Alec Lightwood, Jace Wayland, and Clary Flary (among others), he is called back progressively more often by the shadowhunters when in a tight spot. We come to find that this is likely because he is in love with Alec, and more than willing to help heal him and his family (to prove his love to Alec, to please him, to try to winkle his way into the pretty demon-hunting- boy’s heart using his best moves). Even to the point of draining his power - which is the case towards the end of City of Ashes, when he helps break the wards protecting Valentine’s ship and turn Luke Graymark’s truck into a hydrovehicle to travel across the East River.
[Personality] While some of the things he says - and the way he dresses at times may seem a little camp, Magnus is not flamboyantly gay. Sure, he has an eye for fashion and he has a soft spot for all things sparkly, but who doesn’t? Try finding a really cool warlock or witch that isn’t into leather and glitter. David Bowie in the labriynthe, Galinda… not that Magnus Bane needs a stolen baby or a bubble to make an entrance.
He’s not shy in the least, and while he may come across as selfish, easily bored, sarcastic, and lazy, his interaction with Alec actually proves him to be rather generous, at times affectionate, protective, and loyal. He gripes about having to help out the shadowhunters whenever they’re in need, but he still - pardon the expression - mans up and gets the job done. No matter the expense to himself. And all free of charge.
He is confidant in his appearance, and his power. He’s got mad skills, and he knows it.
[Specialties/Abilities] High Warlock - that's like a PhD in magic, practically. Casts spells, opens portals to other (hidden) places are the world, deciphers runes, tampers with memories, conjures objects from other places - but not out of the blue. Can move objects at a snatch or a wrist flip. Shoots blue sparks from his fingertips which is powerful enough to dispense with demons - or just piss someone off, when they give him lip. Also has the power to heal others from serious injuries, including demon poisoning. He also knows how to employ glamors - making something or someone appear to be one thing - tricking the mind into thinking a church is a run-down building, or a warlock is a house cat. He does not, however, read minds or anything like. It's just age-old intuition..
[Affection] Equal opportunity where affection is concerned. Technically, would prefer a monogomous relationship with a certain blue-eyed, dark-haired shadowhunter, but since said boy is still in denial at this point and hides the nature of their relationship from the rest of the world, don't suppose he would have any qualms getting friendly with other people (although he'd still have a preference for another male - not likely a breasty woman, even if she is wearing a nice designer perfume - and is wearing fabulous shoes)
[Fighting] He is immortal, although he could be killed. He is not a physical fighter, but instead relies on his magic to defend himself. He can choke a person telekentically (pinch off their airways, I suppose) or zap them with blue flames from his fingers. Or conjure up a piano and drop it on them. If there's a piano to be found anywhere in the world he's currently inhabiting. Not generally one to provoke fist-fights, but he doesn't always have a very good filter on the things he says - and has been known to anger the company. Especially if he's bored or disinterested in said company, in which case he doesn't even try to be polite..
[Other Facts] Likes intense kisses, canoodling, long walks in the park and pretty butterflies. Dislikes the Times crossword puzzle, one donut left in the box, and liars.
