Have you heard/seen the beyond ridiculous BELIEVE campaign?

Yet another charm of the city!

I don't even get what the Believe campaign is about...Believe what? WHAT!!!?

Anyway, off-topic, just wanted to tell you before you heard it through the grapevine that I joined unfatshionista. I still think emilytbm is racist, but I found myself watching that community anyway and actually giggling at some of the comments made about particularly bad fashion choices. If the racist ignorance appears there though I am O-U-T.

I hope that you don't feel like you can trust me less or anything because our budding lj friendship is more important to me than snarking on someone's capris.

1. The BELIEVE campaign is so ludicrous. It's Baltimore's attempt to rid itself of its drug problem by posting signs with that word all over the city. My brain kind of sizzles a little each time I think of the campaign.

2. Oh man, I have a whole lot of thoughts about that community. Ultimately, do what makes you happy and I won't unfriend you, but I just feel really strongly about people linking to photos from fatshionistas and making fun of them. To me, it feels antifeminist and a severe violation of trust, since folks there hold dual membership. I love me some snarking on someone's bad behavior or stupid ideas, but that feels really really different than snarking on someone's outfit, especially someone who may have low self esteem to begin with. I'd also say that a lot of fatshionista members have ill will against unfats, so be prepared for the possibility of someone saying something to you about it in a fatshionista discussion/argument.

Like I said, giggling about crappy capri pants isn't worth much to me. I've actually been snarked on unfats, myself (but not about fashion). Thanks for giving me your thoughts; I'm going to leave the community. But more importantly, I have to work on examining that voice in my head that makes me think "OMG, look what *she's* wearing." Like, what does that voice accomplish? When is it harmless and when is it harmful? Is it ever harmless? How does the identity of the person that I am snarking on play into it (because, frankly, I am more likely to snark on white women's fashion than women of color). Anyway, thanks for your thoughts.
