Racism as a wordbank

This is something I've been thinking about for a while. I have been trying to think of a way to articulate how to explain how statements that supposedly "aren't racist" have racism as a communal unconscious core. It's like racism acts as a word bank, and we all have this racist word bank in our unconscious which we can pull from when needed ( Read more... )

Original or not, it's dead-on. There is a ton of language that is hateful and menacing and offensive at best that gets thrown around far too casually far too often.

I remember the first time I heard this brought up in the media. In 1985, the St. Louis Cardinals had just won the World Series and during one of the post game interviews, one of the tv guys was talking to the Cards third baseman, Terry Pendleton, who is black. Once the interview was over, he mentioned how "articulate" Terry was. He caught a shit load of trouble for it. There were many things said about him using that word for Terry, but none of the other players throughout the playoffs and the debate went on for awhile after. That was the last time I heard that word used for an athlete but it seems things have been forgotten in the meantime.

Up
