Voting survey results

Apr 30, 2012 21:51

Here’s a compilation of the results from this survey. Sorry, this came a little later than I would've wanted.

What do you like about voting?

vanmeeuwe -- I like that votes are personalized and unique...and a mix of both, what the applicant feels like and what others, objectively, see in them.
mmailliw -- when the application is great and I can really see an animal coming out
_morning_glow -- Voting is the BEST. Finding the best fit is like solving a puzzle and it makes me really glad to see someone choose the animal I suggested!
maverickz3r0 -- I like how absolutely any animal can be assigned, not just ones off of a select list.
thegrownupthing -- I like any form of stamping tbh. I think it gives the person a sense of belonging and it's great they feel listened to.
crusading_soul -- I love the freedom of expression it offers to voters - we can go with our guts and describe EXACTLY what we think would suit that person.

What DON'T you like about voting?

In “Other” were some misconceptions that have already been clarified in the recent FAQ as well as some of the following comments.

musikurt -- I used to think it was incredibly time consuming, but now that I've developed a system for myself and the mods (over the past several terms) have clarified what's expected in terms of intermediate and full votes, I find it takes me little time at all
zestyzorra -- Voting is my least favorite thing at HiH. It is tedious, and requires way too much time. I don't understand why the rules require so much detail when voting someone's form when the applicant doesn't even get to read the vote.
raphaellover -- It's too... time consuming. It takes a lot to write a decent vote and then when your animal isn't chosen as one to give, it feels like a wasted effort.
abcdefghijkatie -- Time-consuming. It always takes me about an hour per application because I read it thoroughly and do a lot of internet digging to try to find something good for them.
accountingwitch -- The details and reasoning. I like going with my gut, but not having to explaining it.
fvck -- When I've voted/started voting before, I've hated coming across the perfect animal form only to find that someone has already taken it. xD
surmise -- The whole stipulation on giving a certain amount of reason for the animagus. I know it's relevant and really good for voting, but the whole points breakdown that goes with it is really very daunting and annoying.
d_andru -- When applications aren't detailed. Oh and I miss the old sheet where all the Animagi were listed including past/no longer active Animagi that were listed in a different color. It was really useful when I was stumped.

If you don’t vote or don’t vote regularly, would you want to? What is stopping you?
Most answers were similar to the previous questions, but here are a few quotes:
clzair -- I would want to, but it takes a lot of time and I always feel like I'm forgetting about the not so "obvious" animal choices
ashspark -- If I was allowed to give a main group of animal, I would vote. if the applicant could chose (in the case of a cashaped animagus still) her kind of cat, I would be fine with it. It would be more like stamping.
rhiannon_flying -- I don't vote because I don't feel that I know enough animals to offer variety for the applying candidates.

For everyone, what would make it easier for you to vote?

While “Not having to explain my vote / Less detailed voting” and “Allow people to give animal types” are things that were already in place way before the survey (see FAQ for more details), I’m pretty sure the “for full points/knuts” is implied.

x_____starlight -- Having a smaller list of options when going in. When you have all but the taken forms up for grabs its so overwhelming and takes so long. Having some tailored options for each app would be so much easier tbh
rhye -- I like the idea of some sort of list matching traits to individual types of animals. It would be a blast to make and it would still need the voter to pick & choose a subspecies.
aleator -- Probably a guide to voting and/or some kind of reference for animal personality traits (a comment post?) + I think going through the voting process can give applicants an idea of what information is helpful for voters
chosenfire28 -- If I didn't have to worry about picking an animal someone else has. Maybe a guide about animals to help, like the one that we have for platform voting. .
lovestyle -- Maybe the ability to vote someone in a wider category and then have it narrowed down-- like we did with patronus, except maybe a 2-parter-- part 1 to determine what kind of animal, and part 2 to determine specific species...?
thegrownupthing -- Maybe we could allow more people to be the same (broader) species? Just thinking probably in the HPverse there would be wizards who can morph into the same animal, there isn't just one per category.
blackestbird -- I know most people probably wouldn't like this, but I think 1 batch a month would be easier. Even though batches are only around 5-6 applicants, it's just a lot of work. Taking it to a monthly thing rather than bi-weekly thing might make it easier.

Now what?
It’s great to know what people are thinking about the Animagus process, but the point is to actually improve it so that more people can enjoy it and participate. We also want to think through any changes, no point in change for the sake of it. Because this takes time and term XXII is coming to an end, we can’t promise you anything more for the end of the term, but Chelsea and I have compiled some information and ideas for the next mods about:
- A voting guide (a lot of you also posted comments with tips for new or confused voters),
- Advice for new applicants (making sure applications have relevant information for voters),
- A survey about the application form,
- Ideas on how to make a cheat sheet.

Congrats to _morning_glow & rhye who will be our new mods for Term XXIII!
