...does the man understand the concept of fiction? I am so baffled by these bans again and again. These students can read the books anywhere else. Is it only dangerous when they are read in the school library? Why are exorcists still allowed to roam societies and do harm???
How people like that pastor manage to navigate the world is beyond me.
Maybe it's just us Europeans who don't understand all these bans :D
Honestly speaking, it just does not make any sense. Especially since it's been literally decades when the first book came out, so it's not those kids have never heard of Harry Potter before. Like, are those people for real? Banning guns = no, because we need guns to protect ourselves and banning them is against our constitutional rights. Banning fictional book = well of course, they are the cause of everything that is wrong in our country.
Who knows maybe catholic schools here ban them too, but I don't think we have that many because schools are mostly public and therefor not linked to a religion. And I am not sure if school libraries are that common, at least in Germany I don't think they are. We just have general public libraries.
Very true too, I didn't even think about how delayed this is as well. I guess the book ban is so local (just that one schools library) that it can be done easily and is not done by the state, which the gun ban would be. I feel like there is a lot of antiintellectualism in the US going on so reading is considered stupid and banning books not seen as a big deal, that might have something to do with it too.
We don't have catholic schools in Finland, so that's not going to be issue here. Not all the schools have libraries here - the one in my daughter's school is actually part of the public library system of this city.
I grew up in a crazy church, and as a twelve-year-old I once found myself talking to an adult who said, “Well, if [JKR]’s not a real witch, she’s sure done her research!”
The ignorance and hysteria was unbelievable. My mother, a reading teacher, tried patiently explaining that it was all imaginary, but to no avail. The emotional impulse to believe outlandish things is too often stronger than the boring old truth.
