brainsfrittatasummary: Jaejoong is the best matchmaker.
"But I don't even like ice-cream!" Junsu complains, trying to keep his -already awful- balance while holding a box three times bigger than himself.
"Also, why do I have to bring your clothes? Last time I checked they are yours and not mine! I think I even lost my own suitcase!" he cries out, hoping to reach the upper floor without breaking his bones down the stairs. He feels something soft on his head, and that something is probably one of Jaejoong's many tops. His friend's clothes are apparently alive, and literally trying to escape from the box.
"Junsu, I already promised to buy you some ice cream, stop complaining!" Jaejoong's voice comes from the kitchen, along with weird noises and the sound of water running. Thinking that he's probably preparing lunch for both of them, Junsu decides to shut up and just finish the damned task. The idea of getting ice cream instead of a tasty piece of pizza, though, forces him to stop for the fourth time.
"But hyung I don't even like ice cream!" he shouts again, right in the middle of a battle against a belt that was poking out of the box. Without waiting for an answer, he leaves the heavy load in front of Jaejoong's room and goes into his own, which happens to be in front of it. He falls onto the bed and a loud sigh leaves his lips, filling the silence.
At first, going on vacation with his friend sounded like the most perfect holiday ever. They had both graduated and their parents had allowed them to organize a trip to the seaside. The idea was tempting, Junsu couldn't deny it, but when Jaejoong called him at five in the morning to tell him that he had just found a super nice house to rent for a month, Junsu regretted it immediately. Thinking about it, he simply could have asked for a new PlayStation or a new pair of soccer shoes, but it was too late. Jaejoong had already planned everything and just like a Swiss clock, he was outside Junsu's house at six in the morning, a big bright smile on his face. And if you are wondering, yes, that all happened in one day.
"So, I was thinking, maybe we should take a break and go to the beach for today. We earned it!" Jaejoong exclaims with enthusiasm, entering the room with a lovely apron tied around his waist and a wooden spoon in his hand. "You are so pale, Junsu! Some tan surely won't hurt you, nobody likes having a ghost-like skin, you know?" he keeps moving the spoon around and around as he talks, walking non-stop and occasionally checking himself out in the mirror next to the closet.
"We can drink fancy cocktails and look at hot people, how about that?" but there's no answer from the half-dead body spread on the bed, apart from a high-pitched noise that is supposed to be a lament. "Does eating a popsicle sound better?" he tries again, poking Junsu's cheek with the spoon.
"Nobody likes popsicles" Junsu points out, freeing himself from that wooden weapon with a slap.
"Ice cream?" Jaejoong crosses his arms, starting to feel a bit frustrated.
"I don't even like ice cream!!" Junsu's umpteenth complaint lights up a lightbulb inside the other's brain.
"Well," Jaejoong says, "I guess we won't play soccer, then…" and that's enough to make Junsu stand up in less than a second. "Oh damn, I need to find my costume!" he screams as he flies down the stairs to look for his suitcase in the car's trunk.
As soon as he closes the front door behind his back, he sees a young man standing next to the car, with a serious expression painted on his face. He is rather good looking; his short black hair frames his face perfectly. His traits are soft and the glasses perched up on his nose give him an intellectual look no one could ignore.
"Hello!" Junsu greets him waving his hand, but the stranger doesn't seem to care much about greetings in general. "Your friend ran over my bicycle." he simply says, looking at the mess of iron and steel right under the car's front wheels. Well, shit.
"I'm so sorry, sir. My friend's not the best driver in the world and he just got back…wait just a moment please."
Junsu is completely mortified. After releasing what remains of the bicycle, he reaches for his wallet in the back pocket of his jeans to repay for the damage, but the stranger simply walks away without a word, trying not to lose a piece or a wheel somewhere.
"Whoa, that guy has really nice hair! And have you seen those glasses? I bet he's a teacher or something." Jaejoong magically appears next to him, still carrying that horrendous spoon with him. Junsu has to count to ten in order not to smack that wooden thing onto his friend's handsome face.
It's three in the afternoon and their feet are finally buried in the hot, golden sand. The weather is just perfect: not too hot, not too cold. The sun shines brightly in the deep blue sky, no clouds in sight. Jaejoong fixes his expensive sunglasses and lays his colorful towel next to Junsu's, ready to enjoy his deserved holiday in every way possible. That accident from before is long forgotten even for Junsu, who slowly enters the water up to his knees while gazing at the horizon. In the end he couldn't find his costume, so he wore a pair of red shorts and a white t-shirt instead, but maybe it's better this way. He doesn't feel comfortable enough to show too much skin, to be honest. Tanning is not on his to do list and he doesn't get jealous whenever a girl stops to look at Jaejoong's good looking body (thank god getting a girlfriend is not on his to do list either, otherwise he'd end up crying and complaining some more about having too much meat on his bones) so everything's alright.
"Hey Jae! Pass the ball!" he raises both his arms towards Jaejoong. The soccer ball lays quietly on the dry sand next to his friend, ready to be kicked.
"Alright, alright!" Jaejoong stands up and carelessly kicks the ball, hoping for the best. Soccer was never his forte, but a ball never killed anyone, right? Well, not until now. Junsu follows the trajectory and if his eyes don't fail him, the ball lands exactly on the head of another vacationer who was standing not too far from him. Yeah, that's why Jaejoong never made it to the soccer team in high school.
Junsu hurries over to the poor victim, already thinking about some excuses and kind phrases to say to him. His words, mixed with Jae's 'sorry! My bad!' , suddenly die in his throat as soon as he recognizes the guy's face. It's exactly the same person whose bicycle has been wrecked by the car a couple of hours before.
"Oh my god, I'm so sorry!" Junsu kneels in front of him and hides half of his face in his hands for a few seconds. "I hope your glasses aren't broken or anything" he adds right away because hey, he's not super rich and money is a big deal in his family. He absolutely can't afford a new pair of glasses, especially if they are designed by some important stylist.
Fortunately for him, the guy shakes his head and gets up. "It's ok," he says with a sad tone, "I was just about to go home anyways."
Junsu nods and bows, apologizing once more. Jaejoong, on the other hand, is smiling proudly. Why? Because in his mind, he has just made the best love match of his life.
"How can I repay you? After the accident this morning…" the stranger stops him right away. "Don't worry, accidents happen all the time. Just tell your friend to be careful next time, ok?" and with that, he's gone.
Junsu silently watches him walk away and sighs. This vacation is really starting to suck.
Later, when the sun is almost gone, they decide to have dinner at a local restaurant near the seaside. Jaejoong choses the best table, the only one that allows the both of them to see the sunset reflecting on the sea. The pinkish light passes through the windows and fills the entire room, making that moment even more magical than it could possibly be. The food is delicious and they chat and laugh for hours, forgetting about what happened during that day.
After dinner, they have a cocktail at a bar not too far from the restaurant. The drink is sweet and sour and it's the most wonderful thing Junsu has ever drank in his whole life. They get back home shortly after, since some stuff is still wrapped in paper or closed into boxes.
Junsu's room is slightly smaller that Jaejoong's but it has the best view indeed; if he turns his head in a specific direction, he can see the moon's reflection between the waves, and that was enough to make him say 'ok I want this room no matter what!'.
There are still a couple of boxes on the floor, and even if the alcohol is starting to affect him, Junsu is strong enough to fight the will to fall asleep on his desk. He plays some music on his laptop to make the 'unwrapping mission' less boring, singing along to some tunes and successfully filling his closet with his clothes. He's about to fix the curtains when Jaejoong knocks on his door.
"Hey, how is it going? Can I stay here for a while?" he asks, making his way to the window.
"Sure, go ahead" Junsu smiles and lets him light a cigarette, dropping the curtains on a cupboard nearby.
"Did you know that your friend is also our neighbor?" Jae suddenly says, pointing at the house next to theirs. Junsu follows his finger and there he is, paying the piano. That must be his room, since there's a bed and some posters. Junsu simply wants to pack up his things and return to Seoul, far away from that guy and the bad luck he brings along with him. "I think we should try to communicate, don't you think?" Jaejoong wonders, opening the window. "Hey! Hello! We are your new neighbors! Helloooo?"
The guy raises his eyes from the sheets just in time to see Junsu literally dragging Jaejoong to the floor. "What the hell do you think you're doing?!" Junsu whispers, panic painted all over his face. "You'll thank me later!" the other replies, rolling his eyes. He gets up again and waves at guy with glasses. "I'm Jaejoong and this," he pauses just to grab Junsu by the arm, "is my friend Junsu. He's single!"
The guy smiles a little and Junsu wants to dig a hole in the ground and just hide in it until he's 50 years old and the world's end is near. After all, nothing can be worse that this, right?
…right?
It's four in the morning and Junsu is sitting on his bed, still awake like it's afternoon. His gaze is fixed on their neighbor's window and his mind wanders. He wonders if he's up just like him, since the light is on and some music reaches his ears. Is he a musician? Does he play for a band or just because he likes to?
The truth is that Junsu can't sleep and people who can't sleep always get the stupidest ideas, so he opens his window and sits at the desk. He grabs a paper sheet and a pen and writes down everything that's on his mind.
"Hi! I just wanted to apologize for Jaejoong's behavior earlier. Also, if I can't repay your broken bicycle, let me buy you coffee at least. I saw you playing the piano, so are you in a band or something? I'm sorry but I don't know your name. It was nice meeting you."
Later, when he reads it one more time, Junsu scribbles over the last line because that's just too personal and he's afraid of sounding desperate. He then folds the paper into a paper plane and throws it towards the other's window. It lands on his bed sheets and in that precise moment, Junsu realizes what he just did. He hides his blushing face in his arms and just waits, even if his hopes are not that high.
He falls asleep after a while, and when he opens his eyes some time later, the first thing he sees is a paper plane next to his hand. Looking up, he feels a bit disappointed because the neighbor's window is open but he's not home. He takes the paper plane and starts to unfold it, almost certain that he just got his own back.
"Hello. Don't worry about that bicycle, it was old and I needed a new one anyways. I'm not really a coffee person but thanks, I appreciate your kindness. I'm not in a band, I just like playing. It was nice meeting you too.
P.S. I'm Park Yoochun"
"Did you know that we have two more neighbors? I just met them! I bet they are together. Ha! I knew it!" Jaejoong lets himself fall on Junsu's bed and waits for his answer, but there's just silence. "Are you listening? Junsu?" he asks again, raising his voice a little just to make sure his friend is not on another planet. Well, actually he may be, since his eyes are fixed on a piece of paper and he wears a smile that lasts for about a century. "Well, Yunho and Changmin are hosting a party at the beach tonight and they invited the whole neighborhood, us included. You better be ready before seven o'clock!…What are you writing now?"
There is one more paper plane on Yoochun's bed.
"Are you coming to the beach party tonight? I promise there won't be any soccer ball. I hope we can meet there."
And a couple of hours later, there's another one on Junsu's messy desk.
"Yeah, alright. See you at the beach."
The party is a big success. There is alcohol, there's a bonfire, there's food, there's music but Yoochun is nowhere to be seen. Yunho and Changmin are happily chatting with Jaejoong, whose laugh could be heard even by deaf people. Junsu is with them, occasionally smiling and looking around, starting to feel a sense of sadness in his chest.
"Let's go skinny dipping!" Jae exclaims suddenly, grabbing Changmin by the arm. Yunho simply looks at Junsu and shakes his head with a smile, running after them shortly after.
And so Junsu is left alone. Again. He looks at the plastic cup he's been carrying around for a while, but he can't even remember what's inside. But you know what? Being depressed is absolutely forbidden, no matter what. He is on vacation and nothing's gonna ruin it. There are some people dancing around the bonfire, but right now his legs are not strong enough to support his weight; there are people near the buffet, but his stomach is already full and another bite could make him throw up what he ate in 2009; there are people swimming in the sea, but they seem alright on their own, so that's not an option. Junsu looks at his watch. It hits midnight. Maybe he should just go back home and play some video games.
He's just about to text Jaejoong, when a small hand gently touches his shoulder, making him jump.
"Sorry, I didn't mean to scare you." a familiar voice says, followed by a little laugh. Junsu turns around and Yoochun is right there, in front of him. His lips instantly curve into a relieved smile and his eyes drop down because he can't stand the other's gaze on himself. Junsu feels a bit stupid, to be honest. It's not like he has a crush on Yoochun, no, he's just happy that he kept his promise. Alright, his eyes are pretty and his hair looks sexy but his thoughts are objective, or at least he thinks so.
"Wanna go somewhere quieter?" Junsu agrees, so they both walk towards some rocks on the other side of the beach.
"So," the blond says while sitting down, "were you enjoying the party?"
"Actually I don't like partying that much," Yoochun replies with a lower tone, "I don't like being surrounded by people in general, I guess…"
Junsu plays with his plastic cup and simply nods.
"Why did you and your friend Jaejoong rent a house in this city?"
"This," Junsu says while gesturing all around them, "is our parents' gift for our graduation. Thinking about it, a PlayStation would have been just fine, but they insisted so here we are."
"Don't you like the seaside?" Yoochun frowns slightly, looking at the black sea covered in stardust.
"Sure I do, but…I kinda miss home. I know it's stupid and all, so please don't tell Jae..."
Yoochun laughs. It's a sincere and clear laugh, sign that he's not making fun of him. Junsu laughs as well, feeling more comfortable than before.
They remain silent for some time, enjoying the dark starry sky and the soft breeze through their hair. Maybe Yoochun is right, certain kinds of parties are just too much. With all those people, Junsu could never stare at that beautiful sight without being bothered by someone. The only problem is that Junsu is not sure if by 'beautiful sight' he means the scenery, with all those glittery stars and the sound of waves hitting the rocks, or Yoochun.
It's one o' clock when they get up and head back to the party. Changmin is sitting on the cold sand surrounded by plastic plates full of food, Yunho is desperately trying to convince Jaejoong to put his clothes back on because 'Jae I don't want you to catch a cold, ok? Also you might get hurt so stop jumping around and put your pants on do you understand? Jae? Don't you dare run away naked!' and the others are slowly going back home. Yoochun is one of them, so he says goodbye to Junsu and walks towards the exit.
"Hey Yoochun! Wanna hang out sometimes?" Junsu screams as loudly as he possibly can, waving his wand in the air. The other smiles and gives him a thumb up.
Later, after making sure that Jae was safe and sound under the covers, Junsu thinks about that 'beautiful sight' from earlier. He sees Yoochun taking off his t-shirt from his window and his eyes can't stop looking at him, so when the older turns around and waves at him, Junsu waves back three minutes later.
He comes to the conclusion that by 'beautiful sight', he meant Yoochun. And that also meant that he, Kim Junsu, had a big crush on his neighbor, Park-pretty eyes-Yoochun.
