Not sure... maybe try re-seating the RAM. If that is loose, that can cause a possible instant powerloss.

check your front side bus fan... should be a smaller square like one reasonably close to the cpu.

check all your wires (though I'm guessing you did this already). Reset the master switch on your power supply too.

but honestly, if you smelled burning plastic chances are VERY high that something is fried. I would take it in to wherever you got it and make them fix it. (if you made it yourself... slightly more complicated)

Built it myself.

Well, technically my boyfriend made it. He's checked all the wires, but if it was the Front side bus fan, isn't that part of the motherboard, and should thus be under warranty?
