Summary: What do you do when you begin to fall for the one holding you hostage?
“We need to get you to Takaki...”
Yabu’s voice echoed in my ears as if he spoke from a mile away. My blood stained hands shook as I stared at them in shock, I could feel my face twisted with agony. In the process of shifting my gaze to the face of the one who had saved my life I caught glimpse of the knife, the knife Hikaru had used to injure me. Everything seemed to be a blur, my lungs found it a difficulty to breathe, and every sound that entered my ears seemed to be distant. My limbs felt unstable, unable to support my frame as I stumbled only just able to regain my balance.
“We need to get to him soon or...”
His voice trailed off, but I didn’t need to hear the rest of his words. I could feel myself becoming pale, losing blood. I wouldn’t make it if I didn’t get to Takaki. Slowly, I attempted to move through the door I hadn’t stepped through in...God knows how long. Moving my legs felt like moving a tonne of bricks. That was when he halted me.
“You can’t walk out the door like that...” He murmured. “You’ll freeze, or worse...”
I felt a new weight on my shoulders, one that warmed me - a large, thick coat. I gazed into his smouldering, deep brown eyes parting my lips to utter words of thanks, but no sound escaped. He stared into my eyes for a moment, his face inches from mine, before turning his head abruptly.
“Come on, we need to go.” He murmured, his back facing me.
I stepped towards him in an attempt to follow but instead fell to the ground due to my weakness.
“Let me carry you.” He whispered; a hint of desperation evident in his voice.
“I...can...do...it.” I breathed almost inaudibly using up most of what remained of my strength as I said so. Slowly, I stood back up on my feet, stumbling clumsily once more.
“You won’t make it if you walk, you will lose more blood, you will...”
“I-I...I’ll m-make it...” I protested, attempting to push him away but failing to do so.
He cupped my face in his hands, forcing me to look into his fierce eyes. “Please...”
That was when I began to feel faint, when my world began to crumble, when everything gave in. My legs caved beneath me and I fell, luckily, into his arms. Pain surged throughout my body and the place where the knife had sliced through my flesh felt as if it were on fire. My veins began to feel empty as the blood flowed out of my wound. Yabu was right, I was nearing death. I needed to make it to Takaki, and the only way I would make it to him alive was to listen to Yabu.
Fear consumed me as I was lifted from the ground in the arms of my captor. It was an odd feeling being this close to him in a situation like this. Shouldn’t he have left me to die? He shouldn’t be protecting me, why am I allowing him to? For all I know he is just like his brother. But I don’t have time to worry about this now, I was on the verge of death - I needed to trust him. As odd as the feeling was, still it was overpowered by my intense fear. Would I make it? What would happen if I did? But that didn’t matter now.
“Yabu...” I whispered.
He looked down at me questioningly as he walked through the building he called ‘home’ and out the door.
“Thank...you...” The words were becoming more and more difficult to speak and I could make out nothing in my vision but his face. “...for...saving...me...” The last of my strength had been exerted into those final words and after that, everything went blank.
I don’t know if he heard my words, but something in his face changed the moment I spoke them. It was the final image in my mind as the darkness carried me away into unconsciousness.

Wake up...
The words sounded so far away, were they being spoken to me?
Open your eyes...
The voice sounded almost imaginary. Was I really hearing these things? My eyes slowly fluttered open but all I could make out was a bright light. I could see a face, but couldn’t make out its features.
Wake up...
The voice sounded closer this time. It was beautiful, like an enchanting melody, the voice of an angel. Was I in heaven? Was I dead?
Mizuki...
The name I had not heard in what seemed like an eternity was like a wakeup call, my name. Had everything terrible that had previously happened been a dream? Was I home now? The thought didn’t calm me as I had hoped. Instead, it made me feel as if I had transitioned from a dream into a nightmare. Home, back to Kei, back to the emptiness that consumed me every day prior to my being captured.
Mizuki...
Everything in front of my eyes was now beginning to take shape. The bright light was emitted from a street lamp post and it shone behind the face above me - the face that belonged to Yabu. I sighed before slipping back into my slumber. It was all real. I had not dreamed anything.

“Kota, have you gone INSANE?”
“Yuya...”
“So you defend this girl over your BROTHER! And now that he’s gone our numbers are nothing impressive, if any of the other gangs catch on they will surely notice our vulnerability and attack! Do you realize the position you have put us in! And all for a GIRL who is your hostage!”
“Yuya...what he was doing was wrong...”
“NO, Kota, what YOU are doing is wrong! Endangering US for HER! And now you want me to TREAT her after she is tearing us apart! What’s so special about her anyway, huh, that you have to pry your brother off her? We are in a dirty business, Kota, what he was doing is something that people in our business do yet you insist that it’s wrong? Then why are you with us Kota?”
“Because I have no choice! And don’t you question my ways, I’m the one who took you in, the one who has given you everything, the one who has built everything we have...”
“And yet you are throwing it all away for that STUPID GIRL!”
“Yuya! Just treat her, please! If she dies then the blood is on our hands! Treat her so we don’t have to deal with that burden...”
“Or treat her so you can have her to yourself...”
“YUYA! It’s not like that!”
“Then what is it, Kota, what is it?”
Silence.
“I don’t know what your fascination with her is, but fine then, I’ll treat the wound. But after it, you have to let her go.”
-----
“Yuya, thank you...”
“Don’t thank me, Kota.” The voice that awoke me mumbled. “I shouldn’t have done it.” I could hear his footsteps as he walked away.
My now open eyes could see Yabu, he stared out the window of the room we were in, his eyes never seeming to lose the intensity I always saw in them.
“Where are we...?” I thought aloud.
“Home.” He replied, still staring out the window. “Just in another room.”
I nodded. I could feel a slight throbbing in my side, I looked down to see the wound had been cleaned and stitched up.
Yabu sighed before looking down. “You need to leave.”
The words shocked me, they were words I had wanted to hear for so long, but not words I had expected.
“Takaki is right, you’re tearing us apart...”
I stared at him, stunned, as he stepped toward me and grasped my wrist intending to lead me out of the house. He hesitated upon taking the first steps towards the door and turned his head to look at me. Slowly, he lowered his grip until his hand slipped into mine. In a brief moment, his lips bared the slightest hint of a smile and his eyes lost their intensity before his expression returned to the one I had become accustomed to. He then led me through the various corridors that made up the building before reaching the back door; my heart pounded against my chest every step of the way.
“Leave.” He ordered. “It’s for the best.”
I nodded as I stepped towards the door, reaching for its handle. I took a deep breath as my hand rested upon it, this was it, I was free. I went to turn the door handle, but it wouldn’t budge. I tried again and again but the handle would not turn. It was then that I realised it was my hand that was not moving.
If I opened this door, I would be leaving the dangers of this prison only to enter another. The question was, which did I prefer? In that moment, a sudden realisation dawned upon me. I had lost all will to leave.
