The big problem the Republicans have facing them is that their fickle supporters, the Tea Party, who has shown every indication that they aren't as interested in the GOP as they are in their principles, wants to lower the deficit and the debt. Indiana has pretty much the opposite problem from a budgetary standpoint. We've spent the last four years ordering every state agency to cut 5-15% of their budgets (it varies from year to year), but meanwhile, the Republicans that own the house, the Senate, and the governorship refuse to ask for cuts in K-12 education (50-55% of the budget) or higher education (10-15% of the budget). It would be unpopular, yes, but the money's got to come from somewhere, guys!

Of course, states don't have to worry about defense, which is why Mitch Daniels has been a far better budget-balancer on a state level than he ever was for President Bush.
