Ah, I believe this is a question every geek with a spark of hope asks themselves. Therefore, you should be comforted simply by the fact that you're asking yourself this. It's once you're too far gone to realize how geeky one is, that one has a problem.
We don't want to conform or "mature" to the point of giving up the things we love; but neither do we want to drift from the "geek" category to the "loser" label.
A good rule of thumb is that our geekdoms need to be fun supplements to our lives; not a replacement for an actual life. That's why I had to cut L.A.R.P. out of my life. One can't just play LARP, you live LARP. Therefore, letting something geeky (Avatar) ruin something real (a new friendship) could be a problem. However, it sound like he was being a bit of an ass, and letting his own geekiness overrule his own basic ettiquette. I believe you can relax
