Often is the case that those who deal with books in any capacity on a regalia basis tend to have a eider spread of knowledge and retain it.

Yeah, I've always been a polymath/jack(jill)-of-all-trades-master-of-none. It is the same with my hike leading and nature knowledge. We have hike leaders who are professional experts in their given fields (botany, geology, orthinology, history, mycology, and more) and then us generalists who know more than the average layman about most areas of nature so we can give an interested guided hike to drop-ins and tourists, but no high-level degree or knowledge in any of them.
