Eight years ago I had to pay out of my pocket for some expensive periodontal procedures (four-digit number) that my dental plan didn't cover. A year or two later, m,my plan started covering them. (I don't think I could have waited another year or two, however; I'd been about a decade without a dental plan at that point.)
uggg god they really get you. And what is killing me is I chose this dentist up in Harlem because she is good and her prices were better then the Park Ave dentist I used to go to when I had insurance. The last time I saw her like about 3 years ago when I had that 1st root canal her prices were about half of what they are now? Wow just wow inflation or now that her practice is established (3 years ago she opened her office here in our complex and I decided to give her a chance) her prices went up way up! Crazy!
My company was originally founded by retired military people. They didn't need to offer a health plan because all of them were covered by veteran benefits. It took a while before there were enough of us who needed coverage for them to put together a plan (because they needed a minimum number to participate before they could get one). The original plan was pretty crappy, and didn't include dental; but over the years, as they hired more and more non-former-military (programmers and other IT people, particularly), the plans have gotten better and better as we get more people participating. The more people participating, the better the deal they give us. So yeah, for several years I had no coverage; but it was OK, because I was young and (relatively) healthy. But I went over a decade without any dental coverage, which really came back to bite my ass (or gum it) later.

On our carts to put back... meaning someone had actually taken it out.
My favorite part (if it can be considered a "favorite" part...) is the tagline along the bottom.
Blech.
