So this is what the bottom rung of the property ladder feels like...

Today I bought a flat! I can't believe that that sentence is almost the same as "I bought a book." It's crazy and I think I'm still in shock. Obviously there's still a lot to do, but I have bought it in the sense that an offer was made and accepted, and a deposit was put down. Offer, acceptance and consideration - the makings of a good contract, ( Read more... )

Congratulations and welcome onto the property ladder! Have you got a mortgage? Who with?

Thank you! I have got a mortgage, or rather will have once it's all been sorted out. I've managed to get one based on the salary I'll be earning once I start my training contract, seeing as it's all in place. I got it with Coutts, my parents' bank, as the only way I could get it was if they guaranteed me! It means I'll probably be spending some of my savings in paying it off until I start work, but I can't help thinking it's worth it to have been able to make the investment (if that makes any sense?!).

It's all very exciting, but seriously scary as well... I am worryingly excited about furnishing the place though. By the time I'm finished it'll probably look like an Ikea show-flat!

That all sounds great. gheldor and I also have a mortgage based on our future earnings - it's a Scottish Widows graduate mortgage and they gave it to us on the basis that two people with Cambridge PhDs should at least be able to find one decent job between them. It's aimed at people doing PhDs and law conversions and so on.

We furnished our place entirely from the Salvation Army. Let's just say that it doesn't look like an Ikea show-flat!

That's actually a very good idea! I thought Ikea mainly because it was the cheapest place I could think of where I'd be able to get everything I need in one mammoth shop... problem is, I'd probably only be able to afford to kit out the bedroom... I think I need to be slightly more cunning in my search for home furnishings!
