My poor little Sony computer has officially died, and to avoid paying anything to the guy who tried to fix it, I've said that he can keep it for spare parts. The problem is, that I'm feeling really sad about saying goodbye to it, and actually felt quite emotional seeing it in pieces on his desk. I mean, seriously, it's a computer! But, it's a ( Read more... )

I'd go for the Dell. All my friends who use them have had fewer problems than my Toshiba's given me, and they're a fraction of the price of a Mac... or you could spend a similar amount and get a higher spec machine. Just my penny's worth.

Yay, a PC vs Mac argument! Firstly, the line about Macs being more expensive is simply out of date. Spec-for-spec, Macs are at extremely competitive prices these days.

I'm a complete Mac geek these days, and I heartily recommend you check them out. I do believe you get a better computer and a much better OS from Apple.

But being pragmatic, if you haven't time to learn a subtly different interface, if you have programs you rely on that are only available on Windows, and if it's going to be frustrating for you when the odd website doesn't work in quite the same way or whatever, then stick to the PC.

For me, once I'd got over the transition, the pros easily outweigh the cons. But you've got to look at what you personally do with your computer, and see how the Mac stacks up in that light.

I am tempted by the Mac, and I was surprised at the price comparison, but there's something niggling me about it... and it's not just that I'd want it in black and that's way more expensive!

I think maybe I'm a bit worried that it'll make bringing work home a total hassle, if the office computers use Windows (which I guess they will). Although maybe the hassle would be a good thing, and would mean that I don't bring work home and so don't turn into a workaholic?!

I think out of Toshiba or Dell I'd probably go for the Dell. I just quite like the idea of being about to "build your own computer". Not literally, obviously, 'cos I'd totally suck at that!
