Thirteen of them:

the Yule lads are:
  • Sheep-Cote Clod: He tries to suckle yews in farmer's sheep sheds

  • Gully Gawk: He steals foam from buckets of cow milk

  • Stubby: He's short and steals food from frying pans

  • Spoon Licker: He licks spoons

  • Pot Scraper, aka Pot Licker: He steals unwashed pots and licks them clean

gryla, yule lads

If I recall, there is a demon in Greek lore that comes down the chimney on Christmas Eve to steal the Christmas sausages.

Christmas is really better than Halloween when you come right down to it.

Well I suppose if you know all about the dark lore, it is really juicy. Unfortunately, in our American way we've made it all sprinly
White, and shiny. The description of the Yule Lads really did crack me up because sounds a whole lot like the dogs. I would really love to implement the Yule Lads with my grandchildren but I don't see their parents going along with it. They do Saint Nicholas, which is a holdover from Jason's Catholic childhood, and they do that repulsive little pervert The Elf on the Shelf. There's a lot of things I'd like to do with my grandkids, but they're so damn many of them and they're so busy that it's hard to corrupt them with my ways

You do know there is a Krampus on the Shelf now....lol.

The Yule Lads are indeed very pup-ish. Yeah, until you start to really LOOK at Christmas traditions, you have no idea of how very dark this season is. It is like Halloween opens the door and it really does not close until Easter.

And I forgot: do you have the book Pagan Christmas the plants spirits and rituals at the origins of Yuletide? It's by Christian Ratsch snd Claudia Muller-Ebling.

I love his books as he is into psychotropic plants and Germanic customs. This book is really fun.
