From what I've been reading, more and more people are turning away from traditional publishing. Especially when it comes to eBooks.
I'll look for a traditional publisher for my nonfiction book, but when it comes to fiction, I might someday go the self-publishing route. While I don't have as many gay characters as you, I have some, and I have even more characters who don't want to be wives and mommies, and who outright reject traditional family values, and I don't think publishers would like that. "This is a great story... but can you turn the main character into a male, or maybe make her the love interest of a male character? And can she be a single mom who runs a daycare and blogs about baby poop?" Um. No.
