Oh I can totally relate to the experience of trying to have an organized event around holiday time that has nothing to do with the holiday. Vacation times are a horrible time to try to get people to commit to anything, and so many just blow off their responsibility. Last year I directed a show that clearly stated there was rehearsal on the Saturday of Thanksgiving weekend, and maybe 1/3 of the cast at least had the courtesy to notify me that they couldn't make it, another 1/3 didn't show up at all, with no notice whatsoever. Another time, I was scheduled to work on a production of Sleeping Beauty, and a special rehearsal with three fairies who agreed to rehearse on the Saturday of Memorial Day weekend, and one of them didn't show, and we found out that her parents had arbitrarily decided to take her to some horse show thing instead. We ended up replacing her.
