Rhonda tied a silk scarf around her perfect hair and ducked through the back door of the apartment building she had been spending her evenings for the past three weeks. She climbed the scarily unstable stair case and tried to look inconspicuous as she hastily rapped on the door of #3B before slipping inside. Before she could find the light, her mouth was always attacked by a flash of pale white skin and messy blonde hair, and she forgot all about the world as she collapsed under the weight of her sudden companion onto a filthy mattress in the corner of the tiny one-room apartment.

She never understood how Helga did the things she did. With a quick flick of her hand through the thick golden knot at the back of her head, Helga's hair surrounded Rhonda and swallowed her up like a sea of sunshine and the slightest scent of strawberries and coconut. Hands were everywhere, clothes were mindlessly tossed halfway across the room, and afterward Rhonda could think of nothing of substance for hours, until she dressed, gathered her belongings, and left before she did anything else stupid.

"Where are you going?" A throaty voice emerged from Helga one night as Rhonda pulled her silk blouse back over her head. The question struck her as rather unexpected, since they rarely spoke.

"Um ... I need to go home," Rhonda replied, running fingers through her own dark hair and foolishly looking in the small mirror on the wall. Stupid, she thought, as the room was still completely darkened and she couldn't have seen her reflection anyway.

"Why don't you stay?" Helga said, almost demanding rather than asking. She lit a fresh cigarette and blew smoke in Rhonda's direction.

Rhonda looked at her, as her cheeks burned as hotly as other parts of her anatomy had only hours earlier. She wanted nothing more than to stay here and surround herself forever with strawberries and coconuts. "Don't be stupid," she snapped instead. Rhonda couldn't see, but she knew she had hurt her. She felt the floor beneath her still-bare feet creak as Helga got to her feet and crossed the room toward her. A sharp intake of breath could be heard from Rhonda's throat as she waited ... waited ...

There. Helga took Rhonda's hand in her own and tugged gently, pulling her back toward the other side of the room where they had been so close for the past three weeks, where they could hardly tell whose hair was black and whose hair was blonde as it fell around one another.

"No," Rhonda whispered, jerking her hand back and half-running for the door. Not looking back, she broke out into a sprint through the door, down the stairs, and out into the night until she was out of breath and had a cramp in her side. "You're no good for me," she told no one in particular. She wasn't quite sure what she had done; all Rhonda knew was how stupid she felt.
