Title: Abandoned
Character(s)/Pairing(s): America/England, Canada
Rating: T
Summary: Orphan! AU. Alfred was always alone and unneeded ever since he was born... until he met his new roomate, Arthur Kirkland. This chapter: Matthew, Matthew, oh Matthew.

“So how’s your new life, Arthur?” Matthew asked sarcastically as he opened a can of soda. The hiss of the can seemed to match Arthur’s feelings perfectly.

After the sudden meeting with Matthew, the two decided to talk after school in one of the empty classrooms. They needed to play “catch up,” after all. Plus, Arthur wanted some questions answered. That’s what he had thought.

Apparently, it was harder to ask the questions than he thought. He had already planned for the worst outcome, but what good did that do? He couldn’t predict the true answers. He swallowed as Matthew concentrated on the drink’s container. That boy seemed to be interested in the odd design printed. Arthur irritably plucked a lonesome pencil off the top of a desk and slipped it in his pocket. No use of it staying there.

“It could be worse,” he answered honestly.

“But it could also be better, right?” he laughed. He took a long chug of the cola and licked his lips. Smirking solemnly, if that was possible, he mumbled something beyond Arthur’s reach.

“Maybe…” Arthur ignored the angry muttering, “but it’s too late to change now. If I hadn’t left him back then-,”

“Nothing would have changed.”

“What do you mean?”

“I tell the truth, Arthur,” he fumbled with the can. “Hey, why don’t you go to my house tomorrow?”

Arthur raised a brow. After reminiscing of the past, Matthew suddenly brought up an invite to visit his home? What was the purpose of that? Did he want to make Arthur feel even worse about his decisions by showing him Alfred’s new, “happy” family?

Matthew seemed to read his thoughts, since he retorted to a more sympathetic tone. “I don’t mean anything bad by it. Besides, Al will be at a baseball game with Dad, so he won’t disturb us. We’ll just chill; we’re friends, right?”

“Right,” Arthur affirmed wearily. Sure, they were friends, but not as close as he’d like to think. Matthew acted courteous to any student or teacher on campus, while he avoided Arthur a bit. It wasn’t noticeable to the normal person, but Arthur tended to pick up on the little details. What would make Matthew refrain from talking to him rather than anyone else? He hadn’t the foggiest idea.

Frowning, Matthew continued, “Come on, you can’t be that busy. Please, Arthur?”

As he rubbed his temples, Arthur thought about the proposition. He certainly didn’t have any homework that day, but was he ready to risk the “dangers” in going to that house? He didn’t like the probability of memories flooding back to him. What if Alfred was there? That would be one awkward heck of an evening. Yet he gave in to Matthew’s puppy stare. “Fine, fine,” he sighed. He could almost feel himself getting older by the second.

The boy’s face brightened, relieving some of the tension. However, it appeared he was smiling toward something beyond Arthur, rather than straight at him. He hugged Arthur tightly before Arthur could ponder over it anymore. When he let go, he glanced at his watch and said slightly alarmingly, “It’s been nice talking with you again, but don’t you have tutoring now?”

“I don’t think he’ll mind skipping a day,” Arthur averted his eyes.

Matthew suddenly burst laughing. “Not mind? You should check that door for the answer.”

Confused by Matthew’s words, Arthur opened the door for a big lump to fall on top of him. It was definitely a fat, living lump of a person. He stumbled back and lost footing, only to tumble on the floor. While falling, he caught glance of glasses, blonde hair, and a tuft of hair that was standing up on its own. He breathed in and out once. When was this boy ever so heavy?

“Alfred,” he exaggeratedly stressed all the syllables. Ignoring all etiquette, he shoved Alfred off of him. Alfred leaned against the back wall, looking away. “What were you doing?” Arthur huffed.

“I was standing next to the door, eagerly waiting for today’s lesson, but it seems Matt’s conversation is more important.”

He smiled at Matthew, and Matthew returned the expression. Matthew was smiling because Alfred was there. Didn’t that mean they were working together to tease Arthur? He couldn’t take the mockery anymore and headed for the door. “Today’s session is canceled. Go home with your dear Matthew. I’m sure you’re happier without a tutoring lesson,” he said firmly before leaving the room.

Damn those two.

“Stop. That. Tapping.”

“Why?” Alfred asked nasally. He was doing that on purpose, no doubt. And still, he wouldn’t stop drumming the table. He wasn’t even taking the tiniest peek at the textbook.

“Aren’t you here to be tutored?” Arthur tried to reconfirm.

Alfred at last got pulled away from the kid-like urge to make annoying sounds, but argued with Arthur, “There’s no point! I don’t need to be tutored, and you don’t need to tutor me. I’m sure you have other things to do. Aren’t you going to Matthew’s home later? Why don’t you go now? Luckily I won’t be there. I’m sure we both like to take a break from each other, isn’t that right?”

Rather than let Alfred babble, he interrupted, “Then show me your grade. If you’re at least passing, then there’s no reason for me to continue.”

It was then Alfred finally started to quiet down. Arthur thought that was when the rudeness would stop and relaxed a bit. In contrast to his assumption, Alfred opened his mouth slightly, but he only spat more annoying words. “How should I have it? The teacher is such a lazy bum that she-,”

Arthur smacked Alfred. “Don’t disrespect your elders,” he snarled, unable to handle the crudeness of the boy. He rapidly packed his books. “As you wish, I’ll be going to join Matthew now. Have fun at that baseball game.”

Alfred dazedly stared at his book, listening for the open and close of the old door. Once he was sure Arthur was out of reach, he slumped in his chair to fall to the ground. Though the librarians looked as if they wanted no more than to kick him out, he laughed loudly. Under a half a minute, the laughter became depressing. Even between the changes of voice, he kept his smile.

“Good riddance.”

A/N: I haven't touched this in awhile. Been too busy with school. Gagh. I was conflicted between posting this little part or not, but I guess it's no matter now... I'm hoping there will be less schoolwork through the following weeks... to summer vacation... oh, summer.
