my personal reading of the character (which is coloured by how he's presented in comics) is that the moment he fins out he's a mutant and that there are others like him he rejects his jewish - and human - identity. he's a mutant first and foremost.
"Not only has he lost his best friend, but he has also been paralyzed for the rest of his life. Those are two huge things to deal with in the second film. I think the psychological aspects of that are quite interesting, and I'd really like to explore that. He was really fun in this movie and I'd like to make him really f****d up in the second film."
