De-stinkify

Jan 20, 2014 17:47

I left some milky coffee in my good Contigo stainless travel mug and now the (plastic) top smells like sour smoke.

I've run it through the dishwasher and let it sit to air out, but no luck.

Is there anyway to de-stink this so I can use it again??

First of all I love my contigo sooo much.

For the stink in the plastic I usually will soak in water and vinegar for a few hours or even over night.

If all else fails you can order a new lid from contigo for less than the cost of a new mug. My oldest contigo is about 6 years old and I'm on the second lid.

Something to try before ordering a new lid - I clean mine out with a pipe cleaner. Hold open the button and just scoot a pipe cleaner in and around the holes. I usually soak it with a water/vinegar mix before and after just to make sure it's really clean. It helps tremendously with any smells.

I recently cleaned three travel mugs that were being used for coffee and tea, but continually smelled like coffee. After multiple soaks in hot soapy water with at least a quarter-cup of baking soda in the mug, I went for drastic measures.

I removed the rubber rings in the lids, soaked the rings and lids in hot soapy baking soda water, and went through at least a dozen cotton swabs on each lid. I kept swabbing crevices (screw threads, ring grooves, spouts, etc.) until a used swab no longer had brown stuff on it. It was disgusting, and completely worth the time.

Next time I'll try denture cleaning tablets on the lids, but demiraks_world, see what you can find in the lid crevices.
