Carpet Binding

Has anyone ever hand a chunk of carpet bound off to make an area rug?
Was it worth it? Was it a pain in the ass?

Just has my place recarpeted and a chunk of carpet was left over. We are moving and I was thinking of having the piece bound off instead of spending even more $$ on an area rug.

OR - good places for inexpensive LARGE area rugs (

My parents used to get pieces of carpet bound for parts of their kitchen. I have no clue how expensive it was (they had several complex shapes), but the carpets were quite durable. They've had the last set for almost 20 years. When they need to clean their rugs they just take them outside and use rug shampoo and a hose, then throw the carpet over the deck rail to dry. No worries about getting too much water in the rug and damaging the floor beneath.

Lowe's, Home Depot, Costco, have

We had it done - it was under $75 total (I honestly don't remember the cost because it was five years ago - it may have been less, but I know for sure it wasn't more than $75 - but we also used a small local business vs. your big box chain store).

I think it was worth it. Plus, since it matched the carpet from another room, it was a nice way to tie the two rooms together and have common elements without being matchy-matchy since overall the paint/flooring/furniture of the two rooms had different, but complimentary, color schemes.

nawilla's suggestion:

Don't do anything to it, sell it to the new owners of the house for when their kid destroys part of the rug.

Don't pay to have it moved to your new location.

Purchase a rug at one of the places everyone else suggested in your new location.

I looked into that option when I bought a carpet remnant for an apartment that had to have rugs and it was too expensive for my (student) budget at the time, so I just used it without binding the edges. It's held up pretty well, for a $30 chunk of carpet, though it occasionally needs a "haircut" along the edges since it's not bound. I think it would have been between $45-70 at the carpet place, which is definitely better than buying a whole new rug.

FWIW, I've never used a rug pad underneath it. It doesn't have any furniture on it, but it's never slid out of place on me.
