How do you get oil stains out of clothing?

May 07, 2014 17:54

So apparently somewhere between setting my oil-laden baking tray/pan thing down to let it cool off and moving it to the dishwasher, my careless ass forgot that "OHEY THIS THING IS LIKE A 1/2" FULL OF OLIVE OIL!" when I tipped it over from the stove to go put it in the dishwasher. My brain skipped over the step where I dump the used oil into a ( Read more... )

Your life is about to change:

LESTOIL.

I don't want to put a link in and have this comment banned but google Lestoil - it's a degreaser you can put on oil marks on clothing EVEN AFTER THEY HAVE BEEN THROUGH THE WASHER AND DRYER and it will get them out next time you wash them. It works so amazingly well! It's usually with the special laundry stuff (bleach, borax, etc) in the laundry aisle.

It smells kind of like gasoline and pine needles but just go with it.

They sell it at Walmart here. Laundry aisle. Similarly stocked places may also have it. I've even seen it at the grocery store.

I just use the regular stain stick that you rub in before washing. Works like a charm. I think mine's Spray N Wash, but I buy whatever's on sale, so I can't swear to it.

And of course I have like no stain remover right now. lol Meh. I'll try rubbing laundry soap in there and let it set for a while. Thanks!

That will probably work. Or you could try the hand dishwashing liquid (like Dawn). That stuff's designed to dissolve oil.

Depends on the oil, saturated fat based oils will congeal in the pipes. And if I haven't washed the garment, I rub in some dawn dish soap obsessively, though I'm intrigued by this Lestoil stuff mentioned

Nah, this was just olive oil. I don't really use fat-based oils.

All oils are fat-based.

Oh, I thought they meant like chicken lard (which can be oily), etc.

Dawn dish soap. Get the stains wet, squeeze Dawn liberally over stains, rub til foamy, wash in washing machine. Check if the stains are gone before yout them in the dryer. If they're not, repeat process.

I sometimes rub with Dawn and then scrub baking soda on top of it. That got a stubborn grease stain out of one of my husband's shirts.

Awesome. I actually do have both of those right now. :D

Seconding Dawn dish soap, it's the shizz. An optician told me to use it on my eyeglasses because I just could not get them degreased (due to anti glare coating is what I hear), and it turns out that Dawn saves a whole lot of things.

I think it also depends what sort of waste system you are on too... if you are on deep sewerage/pipes then it's less and issue than if you have a tank - the more low/non biodegradable crap you put in the tank the more often you'll have to clean it out, and too much oil (this is me guessing, but it makes biological sense) might cause a layer that won't let air in thus killing many of the bacteria needed to make a tank work properly so the system may fail?
