Chew toys for cats

Jul 30, 2014 01:27

So I have a 7 month old tabby who will chew the living hell out of anything within her reach. In other words, everything. She's already eaten the plastic/rubber/whatever around the wires on two of my chargers (which were NOT plugged in, thank God). She will chew on plastic bags and paper towels and . . . pretty much anything that has the ( Read more... )

They definitely do! They're not rawhide, I would worry about the safety of that for cats. We've had luck with chew toys like these: http://www.amazon.com/Petstages-Dental-Health-Chews-pair/dp/B0009YF3KY

We also spray all wires with Bitter Apple Spray to discourage our chewer. We use this kind: http://www.amazon.com/Grannicks-Bitter-Apple-Bottle-Ounces/dp/B00028ZMEO/ref=sr_1_1?s=pet-supplies&ie=UTF8&qid=1406715744&sr=1-1&keywords=bitter+apple+spray

We've had a bit of a flare up with this behavior, I've told hubby we're going to tidy up his cables - he's a computer guy, looks like a rats nest under his desk. I've read recently that keeping the cables tied down, perhaps to the leg of the desk, it will pose a less attractive "dining" option. Good luck!

lol I have the Pet Stages ones. Er, had. They got chewed up by my vacuum.

I've heard about the bitter apple stuff & will probably buy it tomorrow once I get paid.

Don't count on the bitter apple stuff, though. I had a cat that continued to gnaw on anything I put it on, as if it wasn't even there ( ... )

P.S. I really think they just love the feeling of their teeth going through the material.

One of my cats sometimes steals rawhide from the dogs and chews it, if it's the skinny twisted kind, so you might try that.

She seems to prefer chewing hard plastic stuff (straws, my electrical cords, this plastic small turkey baster looking thing I use to refill my oil lamp, etc.) so rawhide would probably be ideal for her. Or maybe I can see if they have uncooked fish spines or something at the butcher that she can chew on. I bet she'd go nuts on those.

I had a cat that would chew iphone cables, just them, something they are made off I guess. He also chewed plastic bags, actually they all do. They get catnip chew mice, it helps.

I think she chews partially because she's bored and partially because she's a kitten and is orally fixated like a toddler. I just don't want to come home one day to a cat with half her face electrocuted/burnt off.

My previous cat was a chewer. Her favorite was iphone headphone cords - she chewed through 3 pairs! She also chewed the corners off throw pillows and a dozen other things. (No helpful advice - just commiseration!)

Commiseration is fine with me! lol

I keep all my stuff that needs to be plugged in--all the wires get tucked away into this record player cupboard thing that I have pushed all the way against my wall. The only way she can get to them is if she moves the cabinet (she can't--it's heavy).

She ate the plastic covering around half of one of my Kindle chargers, chewed through/ate my only phone charger, went to work chewing on the head of the micro-charger I just bought last Saturday to charge my phone and my Kindle . . .

I come home every day to a roll of toilet paper or paper towels completely mauled on the floor of my kitchen/bathroom. I'd lock all them up, but I live in an ollllld building and none of the doors actually shut properly so . . .

Edit: Oh, forgot the headphone cord she ate. Part of it, at least. Eh, they were shitty headphones anyway, but still.

Regarding cords, if you have a bunch of them, you can try covering them with a plastic tube. I have a rabbit and there are various methods for covering cords to make sure rabbits don't chew them. See this post: http://www.longislandrabbitrescue.org/bunny-proofing.htm
This is probably more helpful if the cords are for desktop computers and the like that you don't need to move the cords around, not a laptop.

:DDD That actually helped a lot. My laptop is my main computer, so it doesn't get moved around a lot (unless I'm travelling).

All that will work just fine! Thanks!
