Bedside table -looking for a solution

Nov 17, 2014 22:42

I'm not one of those whose beside table holds a solitary lamp. Aside from the lamp, which I may change to a wall mounted one to give me more space, there is usually the following:
  • glass of ice tea
  • extra bottle of ice tea - I have a dry mouth and sometimes need to take migraine meds in the middle of the night
  • box of tissues
  • two bottles of daily meds
  • cell ( Read more... )

I have a Ikea rast as my nighstand, and my husband uses a little cupboard from Target. Both fit what you mentioned and more. I totally have a piled high nightstand.

Also, apologies for the completely unsolicited medical comment, but does your doctor know that you drink a lot of iced tea? The tannins in the tea can potentially interfere with medicine and can cause issues like migraines in high enough amounts. If you don't like plain water, there might be other good options.

I'm trying not to have a piled high nightstand.

Re medical advice - having lived with migraine for over 50 years, I'm a bit fed up of people thinking I don't care about my health, and have done nothing to make myself better. Migraine is an inherited neurological disorder, there are a lot of urban myths about what helps and what is a trigger. I was just told quite authoritatively that a spoonful of horseradish would cure me! I'm not open to advice from unqualified individuals, I prefer my neurologist, a migraine researcher of world renown.
As it happens my ice tea is green tea.

I wasn't trying to cure you. I have no idea what your backstory is or what you've tried. YOU are the one who mentioned tea and migraines. I mentioned because it's not always easy to notice stuff you're used to doing.

The rast has plenty of drawers if you don't want stuff out, but it sounded like you wanted *room* to have your tea, books etc out.

Well, OP's response was harsh, but I had the same questions in my head. Using iced tea as your source of hydration in the evening seems unhealthy to me.

Also green tea (which OP snaps is what he/she drinks) is the highest in tannins, which are linked with migraines. Your comment wasn't off-base, at all.

Do you have room for a headboard? I use the top of my headboard like a long skinny shelf.

I get migraines too, they are no fun at all! My daughter has eczema and we've been told all kids of crazy remedies for it... it makes my blood boil, do they not realize this young girl might be self conscious about this rash and not want to talk about it with every random stranger with a freaking witch doctor for an aunt?! I've gotten to the point where I just say "Thanks for the unsolicited advice." in a tone that I hope coveys "Fuck off, we didn't ask".

Agreed. I'm both a migraineur and a cancer patient. Fed.up.to.here. with 'helpful' advice. "No, YOU drink the marijuana juice and get FDA approval and show reasonable statistics of full recovery for breast cancer....THEN we'll talk." *snort*

I understand some people think they're being kind, but my advice is to realize that every person's body is different and most people have been through hell to figure out what works best for them. You are making a judgement of them instead of leaving it to them to handle their own health. Which was not a part of the OP's issue at all.

I have a brass bed, so headboard won't work. I'm tending towards shelves, but might try and hack an Ikea stand with something else.
So glad to know I'm not the only one who finds unsolicited advice obnoxious. I found this blog -PSA by Feministe to the point.

If you don't want anyone to comment on your life choices, do not mention them. You could have simply said meds and water bottles.

As for your actual question, I've been using small bookshelves as a headboard, but depending on how you arrange your furniture, you could have the shelves within reaching distance of your side of the bed against the facing wall, maybe.

My top shelf has a lamp, the next shelf assorted sundries like earplugs, meds and water, and the shelf below holds other needed items including whatever book I'm reading.

Thanks, shelves seem to be in my future.

I have something like this tucked into the side of my bed. I keep one migraine pill and one bottle of water on the top of my night table for that middle of the night emergency. Also, my phone charging, a tissue box, a book, and some pens. Oh, and my every day pill case. In the holder, I have a flashlight, another pen (easier to reach than the night table), headphones, some 3/5 cards for just-in-case notes, and other odds and ends. It works for me!
