I have the same set up (except mine is 10' wide and I use 2 feet at my end for storage of luggage). I did the 8' and put shelving where it was needed on each side. Just made more sense to me seeing it was an 8' space I was wanting to use.

I would do the two four foot sections so that you can each configure your own space in the way you want it to.

Buy whatever gives you the most flexibility. I have a similar closet system (http://www.menards.com/main/p-2230870-c-12643.htm), and I've reconfigured that thing so many times.

Well, its kind of hard to tell which will be most flexible - depends how the pieces get laid out between the 2 closets.

I think maybe we need to sketch out how we think we might want it and see what would work best.

In terms of flexibility, I mean pick the set with lots of different pieces you could see using. That said, you can always buy more pieces, which I have ended up doing as I've reconfigured my set over time.

I definitely recommend sketching out how you might use the sets first to have an idea of what pieces of you need. I like the shelves best.
