I had a flood at my apartment once (because some knucklehead knocked out the sprinkler from the ceiling right outside my door, while moving a couch), thankfully caught the issue immediately, called management and they called in a remediation team.
Even when they caught the problem immediately, it still required 2 weeks of having industrial strength driers in my apartment at all times. But because they caught it, the walls and carpeting didn't need replacement.
You do not want to be breathing mold, and as a renter you shouldn't have to clean it. It is terrible, horrible stuff. Plus, it could be in areas of the wall that you cannot see. Call your landlord ASAP and demand that someone repair the wall and remediate the mold immediately.
And tell the landlord you will take legal action if they do not immediately remedy the problem. Seriously, that shit is totally toxic and unsafe to be breathing.
Thanks for the help! Our lease is up August 7th. Do you think we could get them to just move us into a new unit early? We wanted to move into a different floor plan anyways
Never hurts to ask, right? Throw that in there and see what they say. Might depend on unit availability. But definitely call ASAP and have them clean up the mold. That's why you rent.
I ended up walking in to the Resident Relations office and talking to somebody face to face so the mold was finally cleaned on Thursday. They also repaired the hole and replaced some drywall in the closet that had mold as well. Sooo now at this point it might be a hard sell to move in early, but now that everything is fixed I can hold out another four months.
