...there are an infinite number of theories like this. You can't test them all, so you have to select likely candidates for testing.

Is the selection process an art?

Sometimes there's the possibility of deducing a theory from known facts, or at least eliminating a bunch of theories.

An excerpt from #2:

And his sleep trading made money, while his wakeful trading was losing money. Go figure.
