Why I Wish Mark Gatiss Were Taking Over Who Instead
DW S5 spoilers - casting, returning characters, costumes and location. Don't say I didn't warn you.
Firstly, the outfits - loving it, and Matt Smith and Karen Gillan look amazing together. They showed up in my local newspaper so I googled them and found this.
To me, in the first picture, it looked like Eleven was standing on Doomsday beach, but I thought it must be a coincidence until I scrolled down and read this:
She [Karen], Matt and Alex [Kingston], 46, were snapped during filming on Southerndown beach at Bridgend, South Wales.
Now, we all knew River was going to come back when Moffat took over, but to be filming her already, when the filming only even started this week, and on Doomsday beach?
I'm not going to go into the many reasons why I dislike River. I'd accepted she'd be back and that Moffat would write crazy marriage crack about her for no other reason than he hates Rose, but this? On that beach? No, Moffat. Get your petty hands off. (I realise this comes at a bad time, in the midst of people throwing abuse at the Torchwood writers, but this honestly feels like a personal attack on Doctor/Rose & shippers.)
I'm trying not to overreact about this, because hey, it's a TV show, and as far as I'm concerned, I feel no personal obligation to take anything not written or approved by RTD as canon, and yes, it is in The Sun.
But ooh, I'm angry. Jumping all over Doctor/Rose this soon feels like a betryal of everything RTD wrote and believed in and made me believe in, everything that made me love this show, and even if Moffat writes bucketfuls of shippy Doctor/Rose dialogue on said beach, just having River there even for a second feels like a massive slap in the face from an ungrateful new showrunner to the man who made this job possible for him.
And yes, RTD has problems with plot and has written some serious crack, but I honestly believe he did a job with DW that no-one else could have done, and I feel very loyal towards him and his creations for that.
Just as I was starting to get excited about S5, too.
