Chapter 15:

Light In the Dark

Nino had forgotten how long he’d been in the bathroom, curled up on the shaggy rug by the tub. It had made him sick to his stomach what he had told Jun and to see the pain in Ohno’s eyes when he had overheard the lies.

Luckily for Nino, no one was home at the time he was sent home with a stomachache, so he could lock himself in without being disturbed. He had cried for a good hour after throwing up everything he’d ever eaten, so now Nino was rather exhausted.

Pulling himself up off the floor and using the sink as a crutch to hold himself up, Nino splashed cool water on his face before stumbling into his bedroom and falling on the bed.

Being apart from Ohno had surprised Nino just how reliant he had grown on him over the years, even though Ohno really didn’t do anything at all. But he was always there with Nino and that was really all that mattered to him.

Rolling over to look up at the ceiling, Nino suddenly wondered why Ohno was on his way to the roof during lunch. He knew Nino always went there... so why would he be planning to show up? Nino pondered this for some time until a loud vibration came from his phone on his desk.

Tearing himself away from the comforting bed, Nino looked at the screen and scowled.

"Aiba? Why are you calling? School’s not out yet." Nino asked, falling into his chair with a sigh. On the other line, Aiba sniffled loudly before attempting to speak.

"They sent me home because I was sick... so I went home and I forgot my keys and no one’s home..." Aiba explained softly but slightly panicky. Nino sighed and rubbed his forehead. He could just picture Aiba, sitting on the porch of his house, crying like a lost kid and waiting for someone to take him home.

"You’re sick?"

"No... I- I was crying too much."

"...fine, come over." Nino said after a slight pause and listening to Aiba cry. Aiba mumbled something that sounded like an agreement and then hung up.

It wasn’t five or ten minutes later when Nino heard the doorbell being rung. Sliding off the bed again, Nino trudged downstairs and opened the door. If Nino hadn’t known Aiba was coming over, he would have mistook him for a stranger.

"...are you eating or sleeping at all?" Nino asked worriedly after looking Aiba up and down and pulling him in by the wrist. Aiba’s once glittering eyes had turned watery and bloodshot, causing his nose to run raw and turn pink. His rounded face was slightly caved and dark circles where under his eyes. Even his shiny hair had grown dull. Nino secretly wondered if he looked that bad as well.

"I sleep, but I end up waking up sad... I don’t remember if I ate today." Aiba mumbled, his voice slightly hoarse. Nino set his crutches against the wall, grabbed Aiba’s hand and pulled him slowly down the hallway into the kitchen.

"Sit. I’ll make something for you." Nino ordered, pointing to the table.

"You don’t look good either..." Aiba said softly from the table behind Nino. He turned around and scowled at Aiba.

"I spent most the day throwing up... of course I wouldn’t look good." Nino grumbled, turning back to the cupboards and finding all the food unappetizing. Aiba laid his head on the table and shivered a bit.

"MatsuJun told me what happened at lunch... do you really mean you don’t love Oh-chan anymore?" Aiba asked worriedly. Nino, still sifting through the cupboards, froze and turned partially towards Aiba.

He could say that it wasn’t true, that it was just a lie to get Jun off his case... but something stopped Nino from saying that. He wasn’t stupid. Ohno had no interest in him and Nino was just making himself look like a idiot going on about how undying his love was.

It was painful, but he had to move on.

"Yeah... it’s true." Nino said slowly, trying his best to speak with a dry mouth. Aiba narrowed his eyes at Nino’s back and pouted.

"You’re lying."

"Like you told Sho-kun, waiting for something that will never come is bad for your health. I don’t want bad health." Nino snapped.

"I’m starting to think this is worse for your health..." Aiba mumbled into his arms. Nino scoffed and kicked the refrigerator door shut.

"It’ll pass, Aiba-chan. Just think of Sho-kun and Ohno as our drugs." Nino returned to the table empty handed, but they both didn’t care.

"Or life support..." Aiba sniffed. Nino glanced at Aiba with a small smirk... he definitely couldn’t argue with that. Aiba looked up from his arms to Nino just a few inches away from him. Aiba couldn’t help but to see the changes in Nino’s face. For always being sharp and observing, the sudden dazes and confusion didn’t fit Nino at all.

His eyes were tired and Aiba hoped that the worried crease between Nino’s brows would soon go away.

Sitting up a little straighter, Aiba cleared his throat and caught the attention of Nino.

"We should have fun. Sitting here and moping won’t do any good!" Aiba suddenly announced. Nino stared at Aiba in confusion, wondering where this sudden energy came from.

"I’m not going anywhere."

"Yes, you are! I’m tired of being sad... please come with me." Aiba was now face to face with Nino, linking his arm around Nino’s. Nino couldn’t shake the look of desperation in Aiba’s eyes.

Aiba never allowed himself to fall into a dark pit like Nino or the others did... and Aiba knew it. He was always there to be their light when things got dark. And now, when Nino needed light, Aiba was there, shinning bright through his own sadness.

Nino loved this best about him and couldn’t help but to smile at his eager grin. Nino tilted his head back and grumbled softly.

"All right... we’ll go somewhere." Nino gave in. Aiba tightened his hold on Nino and jumped up in excitement, bringing Nino with him.

"If your light ever goes out, we’ll all be hopelessly lost, you know." Nino smiled back at Aiba. But something changed in Aiba’s expression that made Nino a little restless.

There was one step forward and one swift movement before Nino realized that Aiba was suddenly kissing him. Not a true kiss, but one that was just tender and nice.

Nino went cross-eyed as he tried to look at Aiba’s face connected to his and felt Aiba’s hands on his cheeks, keeping Nino’s head steady. Feeling a little panicky, Nino grasped at Aiba’s wrists and felt Aiba’s daring teeth gently bite his bottom lip before jumping away successfully.

It took a moment for Nino to catch his breath before he could shout at the grinning Aiba.

"What- what the hell are you doing?!" Nino shouted, glaring at Aiba.

"You looked cute, so I wanted to kiss you! Don’t you feel a little better?" Aiba asked cheerfully. Nino took a few quick breaths and shook his head.

"No! You bit my lip! What was that!?"

"What’s wrong with it? Sho-kun used to do that and I thought it was awesome!" Aiba chirped as he bounced down the hall on one leg. Nino remained in the kitchen, totally baffled at what to do next. But soon enough, Aiba came back and ushered Nino towards the door to get his shoes.

"I promise I won’t do it again, I just wanted to see what Ohno was missing!" Aiba exclaimed, holding the front door open for Nino.

"...I don’t know if I want to go with you anymore." Nino mumbled as he locked the front door behind them.

"Ah, don’t say that." Aiba sighed loudly, walking next to Nino. Nino smirked to himself as Aiba hummed a song to the beat of his crutches in the quiet afternoon.

"Isn’t your ankle almost healed?" Nino asked, hoping to get a break from the repetitive song. Aiba smiled and nodded.

"Almost! The doctor said to keep as much weight off of it as I can during the last healing stage." Aiba said, wiggling his foot experimentally. Nino went silent after that and Aiba again picked up a tune, but this time with more beats and notes.

Deciding to join him, Nino started to make up lyrics that made no sense, Aiba soon joining along and laughing loudly all the way down the street.

Though he was laughing with Aiba, Nino knew somewhere deep in his mind, that no matter how cheerful he or Aiba were, nothing could even begin to fill the space where Ohno and Sho should be.
.

A/N: Ahh, it wasn't too sad, was it?? xD at least they got through it without crying all over the place...
And at least they have each other ^^

Chapter 16 will be up on the weekend as usual and is another light hearted chapter as Nino and Aiba continue their day together... only to have Aiba see something that might explain all of Ohno's strange behaviour....

Thank you all for reading! ^^
