Distraction!
For not being in the mood to eat, Aiba and Nino found themselves at their cheap café that evening after a day of video arcades, miniature golf, comic book stores and ice cream in the park. Nino was surprised how well golf went despite Aiba in crutches. But he insisted that he was okay to play and so they did.
Nino managed to win several prizes in the arcade, splitting the loot with a rather depressed Aiba after he won a prize that Sho had once tried so hard to get for him.
"It’s not worth anything now..." Aiba mumbled, looking at the floppy, stuffed rabbit sitting next to him on the booth.
"Give it to Sho-kun." Nino suggested. Aiba pouted and laid his head on the table, waiting for the food to come.
"He spent ten bucks trying to win that thing." Aiba whined, patting the bunny’s head softly. Nino nearly choked on his drink and started to cough.
"Ten!? He could have bought you a nicer one for that much!" Nino exclaimed.
"But it means more when you win it!" Aiba cried. Nino could definitely argue back, but the waitress came soon with their food and Aiba hungrily dug in before she even left the table.
Nino paced himself in eating like he usually does, watching Aiba inhale his food like he hadn’t eaten in days... which was probably true. He waited for Aiba to either choke or throw up but surprisingly, he seemed to slow down half way through. Moment’s later, Aiba excused himself to the restroom.
"Oh, Aiba-chan? Do you need your crutches?" Nino asked quickly. Aiba smiled and shook his head and hopped down the aisle, making the people at the passing tables look at him and giggle. Nino rolled his eyes and returned to his dinner.
Aiba dried off his hands quickly and exited the restroom, whistling one of the made up songs he and Nino had made. He hopped around the corner and froze.
Sitting just a few booths in front of him was Ohno and three other people from school. Aiba frantically searched for somewhere to hide and jumped behind a fake tree outside the restroom door. He peered through the leaves and tried to place the students with Ohno.
They were definitely in Ohno’s class and Aiba only knew one, the girl sitting next to Ohno. Her name was Shirakawa Ayako and she was one of the best painters in the school. She had a natural charm about her that made her physical appearance obsolete, even though she was very attractive.
Aiba remembered Ohno talking about her quite frequently over the years and the two were supposedly very good friends. Aiba had met her a few times with the others and took a liking to her, even though Nino and Jun thought she was a little too "out there". Which didn’t make sense to Aiba, because he thought she was exactly like Ohno and they didn’t have a problem with his quirks.
There was another girl and another boy on the opposite side of the table with their backs to Aiba, so he couldn’t see their faces. Ayako and Ohno were mostly keeping to themselves, nodding once or twice while the others talked. But suddenly the unknown couple excused themselves to put in their orders and left the booth.
Aiba strained his ears best as he could, but the café was too noisy and he was too faraway to hear anything.
Ayako turned to Ohno and nudged him slightly, obviously trying to bring him out of his daze. Ohno smiled at her and mumbled an apology. She shook her head and laughed before taking another sip of her soda. Ohno said something to her and Ayako stopped drinking to look at him curiously.
To Aiba, Ayako suddenly looked worried and Ohno had a weird, expressionless smile as he looked at her. Then, without any hesitation, Ayako took Ohno’s hand laying on the table, laced her fingers with his and gently kissed his cheek... and stayed there for what seemed like forever.
Aiba nearly shouted out in shock, lost his balance and knocked over the tree all at the same time, but quickly fell against the restroom door instead. He stood there in shock for almost over a minute before taking his place behind the tree again.
The other two students were back and Ayako and Ohno weren’t holding hands anymore, but sitting shoulder to shoulder with their arms linked.
"Double date?" Aiba whispered to himself, trying to work out what was happening.
"Aiba-chan?" hearing someone right next to him made Aiba jump in surprise and move away from the tree. Standing by him was Nino, holding his crutches and wearing a very confused expression.
"Ah, Nino! Sorry I took so long! I almost... got lost." Aiba lied with a very unconvincing smile on his face.
"In... there?" Nino asked, nodding to the restroom. Aiba nodded quickly and tried to pull Nino away from seeing Ohno. Because Aiba really didn’t want to stop Nino from beating some girl or Ohno to a pulp in a public place.
"I brought these because I thought you might’ve fallen or something." Nino said, handing Aiba the crutches and pulling himself free of Aiba’s grasp. Nino looked around the little corner and scowled.
"What were you doing?" Nino asked slowly. Aiba laughed nervously and inched over to cover the view from the tree.
"Just waiting, you know."
"Who’s here? Are you spying on someone again?" Nino asked loudly, standing on his tiptoes to see over Aiba’s shoulder.
"No! No one’s here with a girl! I’m just waiting!" Aiba said while purposely stretching to block Nino’s view.
"Aiba! What are you doing?" Nino demanded again. Aiba never knew his mind could work as fast as it did, but he needed a distraction to get Nino’s focus off of looking through the tree. Aiba set his crutches down, took a deep breath and grabbed Nino’s face close to his.
"I was waiting for you... N- Nino-kun." Aiba whispered, his voice breaking nervously. Nino stared at Aiba with wide eyes.
"Eh?" Nino squeaked.
"Y- You. Because I want you." Aiba said again, wishing he wasn’t so unconvincing. Nino scowled and tried to pull away.
"What the hell are you doing?!"
Aiba spotted the manager walking towards them and saw his chance. He grabbed Nino again and kissed him roughly. Nino flailed and tried to get Aiba off him, but the manager got there first and tapped their shoulders.
"I’m sorry, but this is a family place. We have to ask you to leave if you wish to do... that." the manager explained wearily, looking between Aiba’s unashamed smile and Nino’s red, bewildered expression.
"I’m sorry, I just couldn’t control myself! We’ll leave now. Sorry for the trouble." Aiba grinned, took Nino’s wrist and pulled him along quickly, hopping on one foot and crutches under his arm.
Aiba once wished that Ohno wasn’t so engulfed by his food when they were all talking at lunch, but now as he and Nino made their very unsubtle escape from the café, Aiba couldn’t be more thankful for Ohno’s lack of awareness.
Nino and Aiba finally made it outside with their belongings and a firm but polite request to not return until they could behave. Nino glared at Aiba under the streetlight and Aiba knew he was about to feel Nino’s wrath.
"If you keep doing stuff like that, we won’t have any place to go eat!" Nino exclaimed.
"I’m sorry, Nino... but there was someone suspicious wandering around-"
"It was you!"
Aiba blinked and silently wondered how that would be possible. Nino groaned loudly and started to walk down the street, Aiba hobbling quickly behind him.
"And what was that kiss about? You said you wouldn’t do it again." Nino snapped. Aiba remained silent, trying to think of something.
"You don’t... you know, like... me... do you?" Nino asked quietly, looking up at Aiba. Aiba started to laugh and shook his head.
"No! No, I just had this dare with MatsuJun and I guess I won!" Aiba laughed. Nino hung his head and grumbled to himself.
"Ugh... that explains it... well, I guess I’ll have to get him back for that." Nino said a little more darkly, casing Aiba a sly grin.
The next week passed much too quickly for everyone. Jun and Ohno were stupidly busy with the new play for drama and Ohno had to often stay a few hours after school for both Art and Drama.
Nino was purposely working the baseball team harder than ever, holding practices almost everyday and traveling around for away games. But no matter how hard the practices were, nothing was good enough to take Ohno off his mind.
Sho was studying much more than he ever did, running himself dry and often passing out during these study sessions. His grades weren’t getting any better.
Aiba’s ankle had successfully healed and having no after school activities to go to or friends to hang out with, spent his days napping for hours on end. He hadn’t forgotten about what had happened at the café with Nino and tried so many times to contact Jun and talk to him, but failed each time.
He wished Jun wasn’t so busy at such a lonely time, but it couldn’t be helped.
They did have a couple classes together, but Nino sat in the middle of them, so talking about it wouldn’t be good.
It wasn’t until a month after everyone split, that Aiba finally got the chance to talk to Jun. Nino had an away game during class and Jun didn’t have to run away to drama rehearsal.
"Double date? With Ayako?" Jun whispered during lecture time. Aiba nodded and leaned even closer.
"She kissed him too. They were totally natural. Don’t tell Nino, okay?" Aiba replied nervously. Jun scowled a bit and chewed the end of his pen.
"Is that why Ohno doesn’t want anything to do with Nino? He’s afraid Nino will get even more crushed?" Jun mumbled. Aiba sighed and shook his head.
"It does make sense... but, then why would Ohno get so upset over seeing Nino and that girl on the roof?" Aiba asked. Jun took a long moment to think that through.
"Perhaps Ohno started dating Ayako after that? That’s about the time he ended things with Nino, right?" Jun whispered, tapping his pen on his lip and frowning in thought. Aiba shook his head and turned back to his work.
Jun remained pondering everyone’s motives, thoughts, past accusations and present ones, anything to give him a clue.
As the bell rang for the end of class, Jun snapped his book shut and decided there was only one way and one person with more inside information. Jun sighed and wondered how he allowed himself to become center of it all.
It looked like he would have to interfere with his best friend’s love lives after all.
.
A/N: Hmmm, looks like we have the introduction of a new character: Ayako-chan! Who is she and what is she doing with Ohno!? Luckily, Jun is on the case xD And Aiba's ankle is healed now, he can't stay crippled forever xP
Chapter 17 is mainly a Jun/ Sho chapter since they haven't had much time together and Jun finds out just how much this thing without Aiba has effected him. And we also see how Ohno's doing... which isn't much better than Sho :(
Anyway, Happy Easter too all who will celebrate it and thanks for reading! :D
