Failing For You
"Aiba-chan, tell Sensei I won’t be in class today." Jun told Aiba as they walked out of the classroom.
"Oh, where are you going?" Aiba asked Jun curiously before he could walk away.
"I have to find out something." Jun answered quickly, making his way through the noisy crowd. Aiba rushed after him and grabbed his arm.
"Watch out for Nino too, I lost our bet and now he’s plotting revenge on you." Aiba said with a smile. Jun scowled at Aiba.
"What bet? We never made one."
"The bet I made up after I kissed Nino." Aiba laughed.
"Kiss? When was-"
"It’s not important! It was a last minute distraction, go, go!" Aiba said with a grin and walking off towards his next class, leaving Jun slightly confused.
Jun opened the library doors as quietly as he could and slowly stepped inside. He gave the librarian his best smile, to prevent any questions of why he wasn’t in class, of course.
Walking lightly through the towering bookshelves, Jun made sure he made little noise as possible so he wouldn’t disturb the studying upperclassmen.
Finally, Jun came to the very last table in the very back, piled high with books and scattered with papers over it’s surface. He walked closer and spotted Sho, fully absorbed into writing his paper and flipping through books at lightening speed.
Jun has seen Sho’s insane study tactics over the years, but it was easy to tell that this was just desperation to get Aiba out of his mind.
Jun hadn’t seen Sho since they ran into each other at the staircase the day Nino was with that girl and he was very shocked by how exhausted Sho looked. With just one look, anyone could tell he was lacking everything vital to living.
"Sho-kun?" Jun said quietly, setting his stuff on a chair and finding a seat next to Sho. Jun waited for a response, but Sho kept his full attention on his writing like Jun wasn’t even there.
"Oi, Sho-kun?" Jun said a little louder, leaning closer to his shoulder. Sho still showed no reaction. Growing tired of the game, Jun quickly grabbed the pencil out of Sho’s hand. Sho looked up startled and Jun raised his brows at him.
"Oh, I didn’t know you were here." Sho said with a very dull smile.
"Yeah, looks like you had your mind full." Jun replied, casing a weary glance at all the papers and books.
"Preparation for exams, you know." Sho said quietly, a frown growing on his tired face.
"And trying to drown your loneliness." Jun added softly, playing absentmindedly with Sho’s pencil. Sho darted his eyes from Jun’s gaze and slid down into his seat.
"Everyone’s the same way." Jun said, leaning back in his chair.
"Aiba-chan has been isolating himself and Nino’s been over working himself to the point of passing out, I haven’t even seen Ohno outside of Drama... but even then, he can’t remember the simple lines or the new dance steps."
"Dance steps?"
"...it’s a musical. Anyway, I wanted to ask you something."
"What is it?" Sho asked as he started to gather his things.
"A couple weeks ago, Aiba went out with Nino for dinner and apparently, Aiba spotted Ohno with his classmate, Ayako." Sho stopped what he was doing and looked at Jun curiously.
"Ayako? The one Ohno introduced us to a few years ago?"
"Yeah, and according to Aiba, they were acting like a couple... have you noticed anything? Is this why Ohno wanted to stop being friends with Nino?" Jun and Sho had identical frowns, sitting back with their arms crossed.
"You know about Ohno wanting to say good-bye to Nino."
"Right, right, which lead to Aiba’s decision to end it with you." Jun said in a hurry and earning a glare from Sho. Jun apologized and Sho continued.
"Well, Ohno suddenly wanted to apologize to Nino that day he overheard you and Nino talking in the stairwell. After hearing Nino say he didn’t love him anymore, Ohno made the decision to let it go. As for Ayako... I don’t know much, but I know they’ve been working together to get some project done in Art Club. This date is the first I’ve heard of it... I wouldn’t doubt that this is what he’s hiding from Nino." Sho explained thoughtfully and slowly, making sure nothing valuable escaped his memory.
"Ohno was going to apologize? What was he planning?" Jun asked sternly. Sho shrugged and shook his head.
"He didn’t tell me other than "I’m going to apologize to Nino-kun". I tried to ask him more before he rushed away, but I couldn’t get it out of him." Sho sighed. Jun paused for moment before speaking again.
"Is it just me... or does it seem like he’s distancing himself from us?" Jun asked quietly, looking over to Sho.
"I noticed it also... but I’d imagine he has a lot on his mind, he’s graduating this year after all. He wants to get out of here, so he’s probably forcing himself to study to pass the exams. Even I haven’t seen him for awhile." Sho said as he gathered his work.
"And Nino sure is being a nuisance for him." Jun grumbled.
"Nino doesn’t mean to be, I’m sure." Sho laughed. Jun started to help Sho gather his things and put them into a pile.
"What’s this?" Jun suddenly asked, grabbing Sho’s newest grade sheet out of his folder. Sho tried to rip it away from Jun, but he quickly moved away from Sho.
Jun scanned the sheet, his frown growing deeper and his eyes narrowing. Sho looked away from Jun’s stare and slowly put the papers in his folder.
"Are... are these new? Sho, you’re almost failing every class." Jun said worriedly. Sho quickly grabbed the paper and stored it away.
"Another reason why I’m studying." Sho mumbled.
"You’re drowning yourself by holding insane study sessions! It’s not going to make your feelings for Aiba go away! At least take a break and talk to him." Jun pleaded. Sho raised his eyes to Jun and glared at him.
"It has nothing to do with Masaki."
"Like hell it doesn’t." Jun snapped. Sho stared at Jun with dark and tired eyes, his skin slightly paler than before.
"Why don’t you wake up for a second?" Jun suddenly said harshly. Sho remained unmoving, his eyes burning into Jun’s.
"Am I the only one who sees what this stupid idea has put everyone in?"
"...this... really is stupid, isn’t it? We wanted the best for each other but instead made it worse." Sho said, falling into his chair and resting his head on his hands. Jun sat down also and smiled a bit.
"Aiba-chan just wants you to be happy. Don’t you think he’d be sad to see you failing all your classes because of him?" Jun asked. Sho smiled and laughed softly.
"He’d wonder what was wrong with me... but... I can’t change my mind now." Sho stood up and quickly gathered his things. Jun sprung up and blocked Sho’s get away.
"What? You’re just going-"
"Don’t give me the same speech you gave Nino. I’m not confused like they are. I know I’ve hurt Masaki and I’m not going to go back to him and do it again." Sho said darkly. Never really hearing that tone from Sho, Jun was too taken aback to reply and soon found himself alone in the silent library.
"Ohno! What are you doing? You’re supposed to be on the right side of the stage when the music ends! Where are you standing?"
"...left."
"Okay, one more time with the music and then we’ll have a break!"
The music filled the theater and the actors and actresses began their steps, gliding across the stage gracefully. Jun, who was positioned diagonal to Ohno at the front of the stage, kept looking over his shoulder, watching Ohno make faces each time he missed a step.
"Other way, Ohno! Change your feet! Matsumoto, keep your eyes forward!" the teacher barked orders as she scanned the stage from the seats. Jun looked forward again and did the last few steps before the music ended.
The theater was silent until the teacher sighed loudly and leaned forward in the seats.
"Ohno, you’re now backwards but in the right spot."
Ohno turned around and faced the right way, but slouched in disappointment. Jun looked at Ohno sadly and sighed.
"All right, we’ll take a break, then pick up on Act 4, Scene 2." the teacher called, taking one more sympathetic look at Ohno before walking away to check on the costumes. Several cast members approached Ohno and told him it was okay and that the steps were hard, but it didn’t change the distant and worn expression on Ohno’s face.
Jun watched from afar as Ohno sat on the stage, messing with his sweat pant’s drawstring and checking his phone. Grabbing two water bottles, Jun walked over to Ohno and joined him.
"You’ll get them down, it’s only been a week since we learned the steps." Jun said, taking a drink of his water. Ohno smiled and put away his phone.
"Have you ever wanted to say something... but couldn’t?" Ohno suddenly asked. Jun stared at Ohno, hoping he’d finally decided to tell him what was going on.
"You want to say something to Nino?"
"...." Ohno shook his head slowly.
"Ayako?" Jun met Ohno’s curious eyes and sighed.
"Aiba saw you with her."
"Oh..."
"Nino would want to know about you two." Jun said quietly. Ohno dropped his eyes to the stage floor and bobbed his head slightly.
"...he should know already." Ohno mumbled. Jun wasn’t quite sure what Ohno was talking about, but whatever it was, it turned the atmosphere between them sour and they spent the rest of their break in silence.
