Chapter 20:

Puzzle Pieces

"Ohno-kun? Do you want to stop for today?" Ayako asked, her quiet voice echoing in the empty art room. Ohno looked up from the giant banner laying on the floor and nodded weakly.

"I can’t seem to concentrate lately." he mumbled, setting down his brush and looking over to Ayako. She smiled warmly and scooted closer to Ohno, bumping into his shoulder on purpose to get his attention.

"You two still aren’t talking?" Ohno nodded slowly again and looked up at the ceiling. Ayako sat back on the floor and crossed her legs comfortably, looking up at the ceiling that was covered with various paintings from students.

"It’s almost been two months now, right? I’m surprised the other guys haven’t done anything yet." she said, glancing over at Ohno. Ohno shrugged and picked at his shoe.

"Aiba-chan and Jun-kun have tried to get us talking again..."

"Do you really believe Nino-kun?" Ayako asked softly. Ohno met her eyes and smiled sadly before sighing.

"He sounded serious when he said he didn’t want anything to do with me... but... after what I told him... I think I deserved it..." Ayako watched helplessly as Ohno frowned deeply, clearly lost in what he wanted to say.

"I don’t think he’d give up so easily. Nino-kun... can’t get away from you, you’re his best friend, right?" Ayako laughed. Ohno smiled and leaned into Ayako’s shoulder.

"I don’t know what to do next..." he mumbled.

"Everything will fix itself in time, Ohno-kun." Ayako replied. Ohno nodded and laughed softly. He was very thankful to have Ayako to talk to all this time, without her, Ohno knew he would definitely be hopeless. The two sat in the late sunlight, looking at the banner in front of their feet. Ohno nudged it with his foot and grumbled.

"Why’d Sensei choose us to make the banner?" Ohno asked grumpily. Ayako laughed and stood up, leaning over the work-in-progress.

"That’s what happens when we’re the best!" Ayako said happily. Ohno leaned on her shoulder and gave her a fake smile.

"I don’t want to..." he moaned. Ayako patted his head lightly and stood him up straight.

"I don’t want to either! But everyone’s counting on us, so we have to do our best."

"Can’t you do it?" Ohno complained, slouching over again and making Ayako lose her balance.

"No! And don’t give me that look..." she playfully scolded him as Ohno gave her his best hurt puppy face. Ayako stuck her hands out in front of her and covered Ohno’s eyes, but his pouting lips were still uncovered.

"You’re too cute, Ohno-kun! Stop it!" she laughed along with Ohno.

"Ah, we should clean up, then." Ohno said happily, taking Ayako’s hands off of his eyes and handing her the used brushes.

"You’re making me clean these?" Ayako teasingly whined, kicking Ohno’s shoe lightly before making her way to the washroom in the back closet. Ohno laughed after her and bent down to pick up the two trays of hardly used paint laying on the banner. Even though he could hear the water running from the washroom and the cute, off key singing of Ayako, Ohno felt alone again.

The thought of Nino returned and the twisting pain of confusion in his stomach started again. Ohno stood up, holding the trays that seemed like they suddenly weighed a ton.

"Should we go someplace again? Or do you want to stay in?" Ayako asked as she came out of the washroom. Ohno, currently overloaded with Nino on his brain, didn’t hear Ayako and walked right past her into the washroom. Ayako tilted her head worriedly and sighed.

"Ohno-kun... so hopeless..."

"We didn’t see anyone in there! Ohno was all by himself with this big banner thing on the floor!" Aiba reported breathlessly to Jun and Nino at the other end of the hall. Sho patted Nino’s shoulder and Jun grinned.

"Good, just as I thought. Your perfect chance, Nino. He’s all alone... at your mercy." Jun added with a whisper near Nino’s ear. Nino shivered and pushed Jun away. He swallowed nervously and started mumbling to himself.

"Just go in there... say hello. Hello is always a good way to start... or is it too weird? He’ll know something’s up..."

"Why don’t you kiss him!?" Aiba suggested loudly. Nino stopped pacing and Jun smacked Aiba. Nino grew pale and shook his head quickly.

"What do I do if that happens!? What if he wants to do more!?" Nino asked in a panic. Aiba giggled and Jun grumbled in annoyance while Sho stared at Nino in confusion.

"Nino... this is Ohno and this is school... not a porno." Sho reminded Nino, replacing his sickly pale complexion with a pink blush. The sound of the art room door opening hushed everyone and they peeked around the corner excitedly.

"There he is!" Aiba squealed happily into the back of Sho’s shoulder. Nino watched Ohno lean against the door, balancing his supplies while he adjusted his bag on his shoulder. He didn’t know if his mind was playing games, but Nino thought that he looked a little dazed.

"Go, before he leaves." Jun whispered from behind Nino, his hand on his back, ready to shove him out if Nino froze up. But before anything could happen, a girl walked out next, her arms filled with several folders and her own art supplies case.

Nino swore that someone had dumped ice water over him when the girl appeared. It took a moment for the total shock to hit him and Nino heard the three behind him whispering angrily.

"Ayako? She’s with him?"

"I thought you said he was alone!?"

"We did! She must have been hiding!"

"Ayako... she’s the one he wouldn’t shut up about..." Nino thought to himself. Whether the other three had stopped chattering, Nino didn’t care. All he cared about now was how Ohno and Ayako were acting. For the first time in a long time, Nino saw Ohno smiling. She was making him smile.

He was laughing with her as she almost dropped one of her folders... and the way he touched her was so delicate and warm. Nino found himself smiling and finally admitted defeat. Ohno was happy again and that’s all that mattered most to him

"Nino, go!" someone gently pushed him but Nino remained in his spot. He looked to the three anxious faces and shook his head.

"I’m going home. Thanks anyway." Nino tried to get passed Sho, Jun and Aiba, but they caught on to him and kept him still.

"You can still talk to him! Ayako-chan won’t care!" Aiba pleaded. Nino wiggled out of their grasp and scowled at them.

"Ohno’s fine. He’s happy with someone. If I hadn’t been so selfish and stupid, he would have told me about her. I’m not going suddenly show up and make things awkward for them." Nino said firmly, but obviously hurt somewhere deep that he wouldn’t let anyone see.

"But Nino-"

"I’m sorry, Aiba-chan." Nino said in a tone that ended the conversation. Jun, Sho, Aiba and Nino watched around the corner as Ohno and Ayako talked with carefree smiles, bumping into each other playfully and laughing down the hall until they disappeared.

Hearing shuffling behind them, Jun, Sho and Aiba turned and found Nino walking away in defeat, his hands deep in his pockets. Aiba, feeling incredibly helpless, bit back tears and Jun and Sho exchanged disappointed glances before looking elsewhere.

Nino couldn’t understand why he wasn’t crying as he walked away down the quiet halls and half stumbled down the stairs. He was lost in his own crumbling world, knowing there wouldn’t be anything to save him.

He almost thought twice about just forgetting his street shoes and to just walk home in his school shoes, but he had done that before and his mother wasn’t happy. The extra time didn’t bother him anyway, nothing was waiting for him and he had nowhere to be. Letting his body give into habit, Nino found his locker and reached in for his shoes when a sudden presence came over him.

Looking at the end of the row of lockers nearest to the exit door, Nino saw his chance to escape from his disappearing world. Ohno stood with his arms full of paints and books, his eyes unmoving from Nino, just as Nino’s were to him. They both didn’t dare to move, probably thinking that the other was a sort of mirage that would vanish if you did.

But Nino turned towards him anyway, his emotions taking over his body and mind. He must have looked silly, because Ohno’s blank expression broke into an amused smile.

Nino knew then that everything he tried to tell himself was a lie, was actually terribly and utterly true. He wanted everything to do with Ohno and he loved him more than anything.

The same shy smile that Ohno always adored, shone across Nino’s face without shame or a hand to cover it. Ohno couldn’t remember the last time he saw that smile, but he didn’t care. He would gladly give up anything to see it.

"Oh-chan."

Nino’s voice was harsh, but Ohno knew it was because Nino was about to explode if he didn’t say what he needed to say. Nino looked at Ohno from afar and smiled.

"I lied..." his voice was softer now, but his eyes burned deep into Ohno’s.

"I know..." Ohno replied in almost a whisper. He watched Nino take a breath and swallow again...

"I’ve always loved you."

A/N: Ahhh, another horrible cliffhanger... >.< and once again, plans are ruined. But as this chapter is called "Puzzle Pieces" everything is coming together! Five more chapters and we'll see the last piece come into place ^_^
As for Ayako-chan... you can start seeing that there is something between the two, perhaps... I can't give too much away~

Chapter 21! It's another kinda filler chapter... just finding out what happened after Nino declared his love once again and Aiba and Sho addressing some issues xD
