Chapter 21:

I Wanna Hold Your Hand

Nino stood under the burning water of the shower, trying to wash away his frustration and annoyance. If only he had a few more minutes alone with Ohno, he would have told him exactly how much he needed him in his life.

Closing his eyes and letting the water run over his face, Nino couldn’t get that afternoon after school out of his mind.

Ohno stared at Nino, a little shocked by his straight forward confession and not knowing what to do next. He really should have seen it coming after all, but somewhere in Ohno’s mind, he never really believed Nino felt that strongly for him.

"I... Nino..." Ohno floundered, irritated at his inability to form words. He wished Nino could read his mind and heart. Ohno wished Nino knew what he should know already.

Nino started to walk forward without thinking. He didn’t know what he was going to do when he reached Ohno, all he knew was that he needed to be closer.

"I got them, Ohno-kun!" suddenly, in front of Nino’s eyes, Ayako came stumbling into the picture next to Ohno, holding a few papers she must have dropped. Ohno jumped slightly at her sudden appearance and Nino came to a quick stop, the feeling of ice water going through his body again.

Ayako looked from Ohno’s strange expression to Nino and gasped quietly.

"Ah, I’m sorry! I’ll just leave you two..." Ayako said quickly, grabbing her things from the floor and dropping half of it in her rush. Ohno knelt down to help but Ayako shooed him away.

"What are you doing? Talk to him!" she hissed sharply. Ohno stared at her with large eyes, obviously not sure what to say. Ayako rolled her eyes and mouthed something, but Ohno kept staring at her blankly.

Nino watched from afar, a little confused and a little annoyed at the interruption. He couldn’t tell what the two where whispering about, but it definitely looked like an argument and Ohno was trying to get out of it.

"It’s okay... I’ve got to go anyway." Nino said with a strained smile. Ayako and Ohno looked over to Nino and stood up slowly.

"No, it’s okay, Nino-kun! I know-"

"Oh, Ohno!" Ayako was cut off by none other than Aiba, who was prancing down the steps with Jun and Sho on his heels. But Nino hardly paid attention as he walked back to his locker to finish what he was doing.

Confused by all that was going on and all the mental misunderstandings that he knew was taking place amongst everyone, Ohno quickly approached Nino and looked at him in worry.

"I never wanted to make you miserable..." Ohno said quietly, searching Nino’s face for a sign of understanding. Nino gazed right back, full of unreadable emotion. Ohno wished it would be okay to just reach out and smooth away that worried crease between Nino’s brows.

Nino smiled at Ohno and looked over his shoulder at Ayako, watching intently.

"I know you’ve suffered as well..." Nino said, looking back to Ohno. Ohno knew Nino wanted to say more, but he wouldn’t say it in front of an audience. It was so simple to just say it right now, Ohno could feel it on his tongue.

He heard Nino sigh quietly and saw a smile that tried to hide his disappointment.

"Ohno-kun... I’m not mad."

Ohno met Nino’s eyes once more before he turned away and walked towards the exit. If his arms weren’t full and he knew what Nino was talking about, Ohno would have caught up to him and forced him to talk more.

But Ohno stayed where he was, his eyes to the floor and feeling the eyes from his friends burning into him.

Sho made a involuntary move to either comfort Ohno or to stop Nino, but stopped when he felt Jun’s hand on his shoulder. Without looking at him, Sho understood that only Nino and Ohno could fix themselves.

When Nino passed Ayako, he paused for a moment and met her sad expression with a smirk. She turned towards him and swallowed nervously.

"Nino-"

"We’re fine now... Ayako-chan."

Ayako watched Nino walk out the doors and not look back even once.

Aiba didn’t know if he ever had a more pleasant morning than this one. He and Sho had met like usual at the quiet intersection and began to walk to school. Only this time, Aiba had to stop mid-sentence when Sho stealthily slipped his fingers through Aiba’s.

They stopped walking and stared at their connected hands... out in the open where anyone could see.

"Are you okay?!" Aiba exclaimed, grinning ear to ear at Sho. Sho laughed weakly and looked away embarrassed.

"I felt like... holding your hand." he mumbled, fighting against making eye contact with Aiba. Aiba laughed happily, knowing he would explode if he didn’t let it out.

They started to walk again, shoulder to shoulder and hand in hand, picking up their conversation naturally. Several times Aiba tried to persuade Sho to skip with him, but each time Sho flatly refused, claiming he just wanted to take their own pace. It was a first for Sho and naturally he felt a little more brave, more content with his and Aiba’s relationship and of course, a lot more scared.

And Aiba sensed this as their walk went on, every time a car or a bicyclist passed them, Sho would loosen his grip or move over closer so their hands wouldn’t show.

"Sho-chan... don’t worry!" Aiba said, growing a little annoyed after the fourth and fifth time. Sho grumbled softly in annoyance, trying to block his sudden self-consciousness. Aiba tugged on their hands, bringing Sho closer to his side.

"Just keep walking and ignore everything, okay? No one else matters..." Aiba said with a grin. Sho smiled wearily back and nodded, his mouth growing dry as they neared the school.

Suddenly, Sho wasn’t enjoying the walk anymore. Each step was harder than the first and soon all he could focus on was the students that passed them. Aiba watched out of the corner of his eye, Sho’s expression growing nervous and scared... he could tell it wasn’t fun anymore.

Aiba dropped Sho’s hand at the gate and they both stopped walking. Sho looked up at Aiba, his expression no longer happy and cheerful.

"It’s not supposed to be something bad." Aiba said quietly. Sho flicked his eyes from Aiba and bit his lip. He wanted to not care, he wanted so much to be as carefree as Aiba was.

"I can do it." Sho said suddenly, looking back up to Aiba. But Aiba didn’t smile has he lifted his hand slowly for Sho to take. Lifting up his own hand, Sho knew he looked pathetic, moving his hand away from Aiba’s like they were the same side of two magnets.

Finally, Aiba let his arm fall to his side with a loud sigh and started to walk. Sho followed in his steps, knowing he had just ruined Aiba’s whole day.

"Do you think everyone’s here this early?" Sho asked Aiba as they walked up the steps to the roof. Aiba shrugged, still sticking to his decision to give Sho the silent treatment.

"Masaki... talk to me! You’re acting like a little kid..." Sho complained quietly. Aiba shook his head and kept climbing the stairs. Not liking to be ignored, Sho made a grab for Aiba’s hand, but Aiba pulled it away before he could reach.

"I’m sorry! We can hold hands on the way back!" Sho pleaded, rushing ahead of Aiba and smiling down at him. Aiba pouted and shook his head, making Sho cry out in aggravation as Aiba brushed passed him.

The roof door suddenly flew open, scaring Aiba and Sho. They looked up in fright to see a very angry Nino followed by an equally angered Jun. Nino was a few steps away from Aiba and Sho when Jun pulled him back roughly.

"Go back and apologize to her! She’s trying to help!" Jun demanded. Nino pulled away and faced Jun with a dark glare.

"I don’t care if she’s trying to help! She took him away! I don’t have to like her!" Nino shouted, quickly turning from Jun and striding down the stairs, taking no notice of Aiba or Sho. Jun ran his hand through his hair and kicked at the wall in frustration, making Aiba and Sho cringe again.

Before the two could ask what was wrong, Jun walked back up the stairs, threw open the door and went out onto the roof again.

Aiba and Sho looked at each other in the silent stairwell, both very thankful they had missed the cause of the fire and sparks. It was a good minute before Sho cleared his throat and glanced at Aiba.

"Should we... go see what happened?" he asked softly. Aiba nodded and took hold of Sho’s hand tightly as they climbed the steps.

"Did they scare you?" Sho asked, trying to stifle a laugh. Aiba turned his head from Sho and didn’t answer until they reached the top step. He held their linked hands in front of Sho’s face and looked at him seriously.

"Just until MatsuJun calms down. I’m still mad at you." Aiba responded as coldly as he could. Sho scowled in disappointment, but followed the tug at his hand, leading him and Aiba to the roof.

A/N: I decided to post this one because I'm going to be fairly busy this week and might not get time to post as usual :( we'll see how much time I actually get xD And the italics are supposed to be the flashback ^_^
Hmmm, it's a bit of a shorter chapter... with very little development >.< But at Sakuraiba (sho) are becoming a little more open...?
And of course, Nino doesn't think highly of Ayako xD but that will change.

Chapter 22 is a major part. Ayako gets tired of the boys messing around and takes it into her hands. And she and Nino have a one on one talk! :D
We're getting close to the end~ thanks for reading!!
