The Hint is in the Clue
Still upset about Nino’s outburst that morning, Ohno hardly noticed the bell for lunch and his classmates leaving the classroom. Having the same class as Ohno, Ayako walked over to Ohno’s desk and knelt down by his face.
"Ohno-kun?" Ayako whispered worriedly, looking into Ohno’s unfocused eyes. She chewed lightly on her lip and tried to smooth the side of Ohno’s hair that he had fallen asleep on earlier in class. Feeling her fingers gently in his hair, Ohno came out of his daze and met Ayako’s eyes.
"Oh... class is over?" he asked quietly, his eyes scanning the empty classroom. Ayako nodded and crossed her arms on his desk.
"Are you still thinking of what happened?" Ayako asked. Ohno nodded and laid his head on his desk between his folded arms.
"I didn’t know he’d yell at you like that." he mumbled.
"We just caught him on a bad day... and he’s probably getting sick of everyone trying to push you two together." Ayako smiled, sliding into the seat in front of Ohno.
"I never should have stopped seeing him." Ohno mumbled again, raising his head just a bit. Ayako patted his hand softly and started playing with his fingers.
"It was just one of those ideas that sounded good at the time-"
"No, it was stupid and just made everything worse." Ohno cut off Ayako. The girl sighed and stopped playing with Ohno’s fingers.
"If you’re so upset with yourself, go talk to him! He’s probably with the other three on the roof, they won’t care if you want some time alone with him." Ayako said casually.
"What would I say then? I can’t... tell him..." Ohno faltered again and looked at Ayako for help. She sighed and shook her head.
"Well you better learn! Nino needs to told straight forward-"
"I know that!" Ohno snapped. Ayako looked at Ohno, unfazed by his harshness, and leaned forward closer.
"Ohno-kun. There’s more than friendship between you two, isn’t there?" she whispered. Ohno looked into Ayako’s curious eyes and knew he was trapped. He didn’t want to deny anything... but he was scared to admit. Ayako saw his conflict and smiled again.
"Nino doesn’t know, does he?" she whispered. Ohno shook his head and trailed his eyes away from Ayako.
"Think about this Ohno-kun. I can plainly see how much Nino cares for you and I can see how much you care for him. Remember that dream you told me? When you woke up thinking Nino was next to you?"
Ohno nodded and met Ayako’s warm expression.
"Gather your feelings, okay? Find a way that’s easiest for you to tell Nino." Ayako smiled at Ohno’s slight blush and leaned over, kissing his forehead softly before standing up. As Ayako started to walk away, Ohno thought of another dilemma.
"Ayako-chan? What if telling him hurts him?" Ohno asked nervously. Ayako looked back at Ohno’s distraught expression and smiled slightly.
"I think hiding the truth would be more painful in the end." Ayako said softly. Ohno stared after her as she walked out of the classroom and into the hall. He was on his own now, finding a way to tell Nino everything that he was keeping inside.
Ayako walked down the hall, waving and smiling to the students that greeted her and politely refusing many invitations to eat lunch. She had other plans to take care of.
Finally, she got to the stairwell that lead to the roof and climbed them slowly, thinking through everything that she needed to say. Being alone with Nino didn’t scare her at all... it was the challenge of getting through to him that was intimidating.
With her hand on the door handle, Ayako closed her eyes and opened the roof door, feeling the sudden rush of the spring air.
She blinked in the bright sunlight as she stepped out and found four pairs of eyes staring at her, one pair colder than the rest.
"Ayako-chan!" Aiba greeted her happily. Ayako smiled and walked over to them, watching Nino turn away towards the field, ignoring her presence. Jun was the first to walk up to her and bow slightly.
"I’m sorry for this morning..." he mumbled. Ayako laughed lightly and smiled at Jun.
"You’ve already apologized so much this morning!" she laughed, patting Jun’s head softly. Aiba and Sho soon joined the two and looked at Ayako curiously.
"Is Ohno-kun okay?" Sho asked worriedly. Ayako nodded and pointed over to Nino.
"I actually... need some time alone with Nino..." she said softly.
"Nino? Why?" Jun asked defensively.
"Ah... just to clear things up, hopefully." Ayako said with a nod. After a moment of hesitation, Jun, Sho and Aiba picked up their stuff and left the roof.
"You’ll be okay?" Jun asked before he shut the door. Ayako laughed and nodded again.
"Jun-kun... don’t worry." Ayako said warmly. Jun smiled at her once more and then finally shut the door.
Nino knew he was alone with Ayako now and he really didn’t feel like talking with her. He listened to her approaching and then finally sitting down next to him by the fence. She cleared her throat softly and then leaned back comfortably.
"I’m not taking him away from you, Nino-kun." she said sincerely. Nino rolled his eyes and turned his head away.
"He came to me first... after that day he saw you up here with that girl." Ayako continued.
"He knew nothing happened." Nino snapped, casting a glare at Ayako.
"It didn’t matter, he was still upset about it." Ayako mumbled. Nino faced Ayako with a angry expression.
"You’re the one who told him to cut ties with me." Nino said sharply. Ayako scowled at Nino and crossed her arms in defense.
"I was the one trying to talk him out of it. I told him it sounded like a complete misunderstanding, but he didn’t care." Ayako explained, watching Nino’s face soften a little.
Nino stood up and leaned his back against the fence, watching the heavy white clouds overhead. Ayako also stood up and leaned back next to Nino, joining him in the cloud watching.
"Why are you telling me this?" Nino asked quietly.
"Because Ohno-kun means a lot to me and he misses you." Ayako smiled. Nino scoffed softly and Ayako sighed.
"Ohno-kun has a little difficulty putting emotions into words, right?" Ayako asked, turning towards Nino. Nino nodded and followed Ayako with his eyes as she started to pace in front of him.
"He told me that he had a weird dream about you... it made me laugh when he told me... but, at the same time, it made me realize just how much he needs you. I think his dream helped him sort things out." Ayako explained smoothly.
"Why does he need me so much when he has you?" Nino asked bitterly. Ayako paused and looked at Nino curiously.
"Me? You act like we’re always together or we’re dating or something!" Ayako laughed. Nino felt his jaw drop and his eyes widen in shock. He took several steps towards Ayako and gaped at her.
"You... you’re not!?" Nino exclaimed breathlessly. Ayako raised her brows at Nino and shook her head slowly.
"No... we’re only friends, Nino-kun." Ayako said slowly. The information took some time to sink in, but when it did, Nino laughed in relief and fell back against the fence. Ayako smiled to herself and finally understood why Nino had been so cold towards her.
"Oh, that’s why you kept your distance when you saw us! You thought we were together!" Ayako giggled. Nino stood up and bowed with a shy smile.
"I’m sorry, Ayako-chan. I didn’t mean to cause trouble." Nino apologized. Ayako smiled at Nino and sat against the fence.
"It’s okay! The way we act so comfortable around each other, I’m sure it creates lots of misunderstandings. But, I actually like someone else." Ayako said cheerfully.
Nino sat down next to her and sighed, feeling like he could breath again. As the clouds cast large shadows over the school, Ayako and Nino closed their eyes in the calming silence for a long while.
"Nino-kun?" Ayako’s soft voice ended the silence and Nino opened his eyes to see Ayako looking at him seriously. Nino raised his brows curiously and Ayako smiled again.
"How do you really feel towards Ohno-kun? I know there has to be more." her voice was stern but the look she gave Nino was warm and understanding, waiting for him to open up. She made no notion for Nino to hurry with his answer, only leaned back into the fence again and watch the clouds.
Nino felt an eruption of emotion inside him, alongside sudden and unexplainable nervousness. No one knew just how deeply he felt about Ohno besides Jun, Sho and Aiba. But... he always knew that that if you really, truly loved someone, you should never hold it in when the time comes to let it out. He took a shaky breath and closed his eyes.
"I... I don’t think there are words... for how deeply I love him." his voice was a little short of a whisper and a little broken, but Ayako smiled as she watched his ears flush pink.
"I thought so." Ayako giggled as she stood up and stretched. Nino stood up also, a little confused when she started walking towards the roof door. But just as she reached for the handle, she turned around and met Nino’s eyes.
"You shouldn’t keep such strong feelings like that inside, Nino-kun. I understand why Ohno was so out of it... keeping all those feelings to himself must be tiring." Ayako smirked at Nino’s clueless expression and hoped that her hint would sink in.
Nino blinked, trying to go through all this information and figure out what everything meant. Then, with the slam of the door, Nino’s eyes grew wide as the hint finally sunk in.
Nearly tripping over his feet, Nino sprinted towards the door and yanked it open, desperate to find out what exactly Ohno had told Ayako.
.
A/N: Ohno is finally taking action! :D And most of you probably guessed that Ayako was just a friend, but there's still something that makes them a little bit closer ^_^ It looks like Nino and Ayako's talk went well... and Ayako even admitted to liking someone else...... xD who will that be, I wonder???
