Chapter 23:

Deeper Than Love

Ohno tapped his pencil on the edge of his desk, staring at the blank page in front of him. All through the day, he had thought about what Ayako had suggested. Finding his own way to let Nino know exactly how much he felt for him.

At first, he thought he could do a comic strip featuring himself and Nino and confessing on the roof like a cheesy manga. Nino liked comics and would definitely read it. But Ohno soon found out that drawing a comic strip would take forever with all the detail he had to draw... for some reason, he couldn’t bring himself to draw stick figures.

Next was a song. He’d always liked singing and Nino adored his voice. But then Ohno realized that the only lyrics he had were ones Nino had wrote when Nino forced him to sing at the school talent show while he played guitar. Ohno never really liked writing lyrics anyway.

Painting was his next choice. When he returned from school that evening, Ohno locked himself away in his room and broke out his supplies and a clean canvas. He set it up by the window and stared at it for nearly an hour. He didn’t know what to paint.

Already exhausted from doing everything and nothing, Ohno crawled into his desk chair and laid his head down in defeat. In all the movies he’d seen and the manga he’s read, Ohno thought that confessing would be easy. All you had to do was say what you were feeling.

Ohno scowled and lifted his head, his eyes falling on a notebook. A note. Writing a note wouldn’t be too hard to write.

Ohno was in the same position for another hour, staring at the page in front of him. He knew he was thinking way too hard for something like this.

His mother came in once or twice to check on what he was doing and to offer him food, but Ohno was so consumed with thoughts, he didn’t even know she was talking to him.

A simple "I love you" would have worked, but Ohno thought it was too vague and didn’t go deep enough for what he felt. Blinking the sleepiness from his eyes, Ohno began to write slowly, pausing here and there to reread and think everything through.

At one point, Ohno began to think his love letter started to sound like a school essay, pointing out the best parts he liked about Nino and why. He crumpled up the paper and started again.

Nino knew the best parts about himself, it would just make his ego larger, not get Ohno’s point across.

"Just write what you feel... tell him everything." Ohno thought to himself over and over.

It was nearing one in the morning and Ohno was just about to finish. Of the seven pages that Ohno threw away, this one was it. He set the pencil down, flexed his hand to ease his writer’s cramp and picked up the note.

Scowling as his eyes grazed the page, Ohno read each line seriously. He read the last line and set down the paper.

He wanted to express so much more, but everything he felt seemed to be indescribable. Deciding that it was good enough, Ohno folded the note carefully and stuck it in his jeans’ pocket of the pants he planned to wear the next day, for a reminder and safekeeping.

He didn’t want to go through the questions his parents would ask him if they found it.

Tossing and turning until his sheets were a bundled mess at the foot of the bed, Nino sat up angrily and glared at the clock. He’d been trying to sleep for at least three hours now, but couldn’t seem to get his mind to shut down. Ayako hadn’t told Nino what Ohno said, all that she told him was to listen to Ohno when he came to him.

Nino walked over to his window and pushed the curtains aside to look outside.

The weather had grown dark and cloudy and it was just starting to sprinkle. He watched the raindrops collect on the glass and trail down until it looked like it was crying. It was the first rain of the new spring season and as Nino saw it, it was a perfect time to start things over.

Letting the curtains fall back into place, Nino walked back through the dark to his bed and laid down listening to the now steady rain. He wondered about Ohno, what he was doing and what he had on his mind.

Even though Nino had straight out told him that he still loved him, Ohno didn’t respond... other than saying he didn’t mean to make him miserable.

Frowning deeply, Nino closed his eyes and took several deep breaths. If Ohno was going to talk to him, he would definitely listen.

Ohno walked through the morning rain under his umbrella, the note to Nino burning a hole in his pocket. All he had to do was drop off the note in Nino’s locker and wait... either for Nino to come see him or for Nino to drop out of school and move faraway.

Ohno gulped nervously, hoping it wasn’t going to be the second choice.

Students under umbrellas splashed past Ohno, laughing together as they tried to get the other wet with the muddy puddles. He covered his pocket with his hand, double checking that the paper was still there.

Ohno quickly made it to the lockers and shook out his umbrella before stopping at his locker first. Several students at their lockers said good morning to Ohno, who couldn’t do more than nod if he didn’t want to throw up his breakfast.

Quickly glancing around him, Ohno waited until he was safe to pull out the note and move as unnoticed as he could to the next row of lockers where Nino’s was. Deciding it was best to act natural, Ohno strode up to Nino’s locker, used the combination that Nino had given him years ago and opened the door.

Nino’s school shoes sat untouched, letting Ohno know that he was either going to be late or that he just was in a hurry and forgot about them, like he often did. Ohno held the note between his hands and held it to his mouth like he was praying and mumbled a few wishes for everything to go well.

"Ohno-kun!"

Hearing his name being shouted right next to him, Ohno jumped in fright and slammed Nino’s locker shut with an echoing bang.

He looked around at the staring students and smiled weakly before looking to a very energetic Aiba beside him.

"A- Aiba-chan..." Ohno breathed, trying to calm his racing heartbeat.

"What are you doing in Nino’s locker? Are you looking for something?" Aiba asked curiously, opening the locker again and peering inside. Ohno quickly stuffed the note back into his pocket while Aiba wasn’t looking and smiled.

"Uh, I was just ch- checking to see if he was here." Ohno lied weakly. Aiba nodded in understanding and locked Nino’s locker.

"You should know he’s late on rainy days! He likes to take his time." Aiba grinned.

"Oh, I forgot." Ohno mumbled. Aiba grabbed his wrist and started to pull him towards the stairs.

"I came down here to find you, actually! MatsuJun was practicing cooking again and he brought breakfast for us to try!" Aiba said excitedly. Ohno wrinkled his nose, knowing he wouldn’t be able to keep anything down today.

"Stop being so sleepy!" Aiba scolded him, pulling him along faster. Ohno quickened his pace and looked back at the lockers helplessly.

"I... guess I can do it later..."

Ohno walked up to his teacher during art and waited for the man to look up from his own painting. Clearing his throat softly, Ohno caught the man’s attention and he gave Ohno a smile.

"Ohno-kun! What do you need?" the teacher asked a little too excitedly.

"I just needed to go to the... the restroom..." Ohno said nervously.

"Oh, are you sick? You look a little green, Ohno-kun." the teacher said worriedly, scowling slightly behind his stylish glasses. Knowing he must be extremely nervous since the teacher noticed, Ohno nodded and clutched his stomach lightly.

"Ate something bad at lunch, I guess." Ohno cringed, silently thanking his acting skills.

"Don’t make a mess in here! Go, go!" the teacher said hurriedly, shooing Ohno away with his hand. Ayako was watching the whole scene with a smile on her face. She knew Ohno was up to something and she had a strong feeling it had to do with Nino.

Ohno made sure no teachers were around as he made his way around the silent school, passing classrooms quickly, so he wouldn’t be seen and hiding around corners if he got too nervous to continue.

He remembered Aiba had told him about one of the attempts he tried the first year he was here, to go sneak off to one of Sho’s classrooms... only to be caught by the principle. Quickly shaking his head, Ohno tried to force away the bad thoughts and kept moving until he reached the lockers.

It was raining harder outside, covering any noise that Ohno accidentally made as he worked as fast as he could at Nino’s lock. Finally breaking in, Ohno grabbed the squished note and placed it inside one of Nino’s street shoes.

Sighing in relief, Ohno smiled at Nino’s shoes before closing the door and quickly wishing everything would go smoothly.

Nino walked down the stairs with his classmates after school, a little depressed that everyone was busy and that he hadn’t seen Ohno all day. Sho had gone to study for awhile and Aiba had jumped at the chance to be with Sho alone... since he really was the only one who stayed after school to study.

Jun and Ohno had to rehearse for drama and then Ohno had art club right after. Nino’s baseball practice had been canceled because of the rain, leaving him having nothing to do.

Lazily opening his locker, Nino grabbed his shoes and started to switch when he felt something weird inside. Scowling slightly, Nino put his hand inside the shoe and pulled out a crinkled note with his name written messily on the front.

It was definitely Ohno’s handwriting and it caused a shock through his body. Deciding that it wasn’t best to read it around all the other students, Nino changed his shoes so fast that he almost tripped, shut his locker and hurriedly opened his umbrella before sprinting out into the rain.

Running until he hit the bus stop, Nino skidded to a stop and took out the note in his shaking hands. He secured the umbrella under his arm and began to read breathlessly.

"I had a dream about a week ago... about you... I thought I woke up next to you. It’s actually a little embarrassing to think about, but I didn’t mind it. It was peaceful.

I know I’ve been really selfish and stupid lately, knowing you’ve been hurting ever since you first told me your feelings... saying good-bye to you was the worst thing to do.

I’m sorry... I just couldn’t return your feelings until I was sure about my own. I wouldn’t want to jump into something only to have it end badly and losing you.

You really mean a lot to me and it shouldn’t have taken this long to realize it. I should have told you what I’ve been feeling weeks ago and I didn’t.

Even writing this now seems like the wrong way to tell you... but... I wouldn’t know what to say if you were in front of me. I have so much more to tell you, but how deeply I feel for you just isn’t describable.

Kazu... "I love you" isn’t enough for how much I really love you... but since there isn’t a word for that feeling... I guess I love you will have to work.

I love you and it will stay that way forever."
