Faded Words
Nino must have read the letter a billion times as he stood in the rain. Too much information was clogging up his mind, making it even hard to breathe. It all made sense to him now. Ohno wasn’t messing around with him, dating some girl or not have feelings for him.
Ohno was confused and Nino was blinded by his own selfish sorrow to see it. Had he simply stopped and paid attention to Ohno like he knew he should have, he could have possibly helped Ohno and not made him feel so horrible.
His umbrella slipped from his arm and fell to the ground, but Nino hardly cared or noticed.
What was he going to do now? What was Ohno expecting him to do? Of course Nino wanted to run to him and tell him he was sorry for being so stupid and not understanding what Ohno went through. But there was something else Nino didn’t expect.
It was shock. This was actually becoming true. After all the years of Nino’s inner conflicts, the realization of what he felt and then the pain of rejection, the sudden confession of Ohno’s deeply felt love scared him.
Nino blinked the rain from his eyes and held the note in his hand, watching the ink run slowly until the words were unreadable. He couldn’t hear the cars that sped by or the curious chatter of people that passed him, wondering why he was standing in the rain while his umbrella laid at his feet.
His heartbeat was painful and nervousness choked him.
His mind was telling him to run away, but Nino couldn’t do that. He was tired of going in circles with Ohno. It was time that they put it to an end.
Ohno had messed up the lines again. He heard the soft grumbles of annoyance from his cast members and swallowed in disappointment.
"Ohno-kun, we’ve been doing this scene over the past few weeks, are you even practicing your lines at home?" the teacher asked as calmly as she could despite her headache. Ohno looked up and sighed.
"I... have a lot of things going on..." Ohno mumbled, looking at the teacher pleadingly.
"Take a break, give your lines to Fukui-kun for the time being." the teacher said in exasperation. Ohno looked over to his side where his classmate came walking up to him with a look of apology.
Handing him the script, Ohno walked off into the stage wing and found an isolated corner. Ohno knew the lines perfectly and had no problem acting them out, it’s just today he was so nervous that every time he spoke, he felt like he was going to throw up.
Jun, who was waiting for his scene to come, walked over and joined Ohno in his corner.
"What’s the problem now? Is it still Nino?" Jun asked more roughly than he should. Ohno looked up at Jun and opened his mouth several times before anything came out.
"I... I love Nino. I wrote him a note and... and I don’t know what to do now." Ohno mumbled, suddenly feeling like he could cry. Jun gawked at him for a long moment, surprised to hear Ohno say he loved Nino without hesitation, and then sighed.
"Ohno... couldn’t you have waited for the weekend at least? You know we need your attention on Fridays." Jun scolded. Ohno chewed his bottom lip and apologized softly.
"Matsumoto-kun! That was your cue!" the teacher shouted, making Jun jump up and rush out onto the stage, leaving Ohno alone and sick to his stomach.
"I don’t think we’ll be able to raise enough money for our goal this year." the Art Club teacher said apologetically. The members pouted and grumbled in disappointment while Ohno stared out the window at the dark, cloudy sunset, making the rainy world outside a dirty gold colour.
"We have time to hold a art sale, don’t we? We can see if we can get in on the other classes again when they have that Spring Festival thing." one of the other members suggested. Ohno wrinkled his nose at the idea because he knew he would be the one they chose to be the mascot.
He shivered at the reminder of doing it the previous three years. Walking up and down the halls wearing an embarrassing, cliché costume of an artist to promote the Art Clubs’ sale to the other classes.
But for some reason, when he would run into Aiba, Sho, Jun, who would make fun of his costume, Nino was always there to give him his shy smile and tell Ohno how cute he was. Promoting the Art Club didn’t seem to be so bad after that.
"Ohno-kun, are you okay?" Ayako whispered as the other club members were discussing what they should do. Ohno sat up and nodded, then looked out the window again.
"As long as I don’t have to be the mascot..." he mumbled to himself. Ayako giggled softly and poked his arm.
"You were up to something during art class today, right? Did it have to do with Nino?" Ayako asked curiously. Ohno shrugged, not really wanting to go into it. But Ayako pouted and poked him again.
"I gave you the idea! Did you write him a poem or a song?" she pried.
"Ohno-kun! Tell us your thoughts on this, since it’s so interesting you must talk with Shirakawa while everyone is discussing it." the teacher scolded. Ohno and Ayako found all the members staring at them, waiting for their response. Ohno sat up and cleared his throat.
"I- I think Ayako-chan would be a good mascot-"
"What!?" Ayako exclaimed in shock.
"She’s very popular after holding her own exhibition, she’s sure to bring lots of people." as Ohno finished, Ayako stared at him in disbelief. The members chattered happily, agreeing with Ohno and saying how cute Ayako would be.
"You did that on purpose." Ayako hissed angrily.
"You shouldn’t pry." Ohno smiled and looked towards the clock... only ten more minutes and he was free to go home.
Standing at the edge of the soaked and dark driveway, Nino looked up at the house in front of him. Its’ windows softly lit, warm and inviting through the cold rain. In his clenched hand was a waterlogged piece of paper, it’s ink most likely washed away and staining his hand. It was that same paper that brought him here in the first place, it’s idea not sounding at all stupid at the time.
But as he looked through the steady rain, he wondered if it was really worth it.
"Of course it’s worth it..." the voice in the back of his mind whispered all the way here. Slowly and very nervously, he put one heavy foot in front of the other, further soaking his shoes and pants in the puddles. Though it seemed he had been moving like molasses, he soon found himself staring at the door, his miserable expression enhanced by the porch light.
As he reached for the doorbell with his shaking hand, there was only one thing he could think to keep his composure.
To right all his wrongs he had done, to dry the tears he caused...
The doorbell rang clearly and his heartbeat was clear in his ears.
To make his point clear to that one person, he had to tell them face to face...
The door opened and he looked up at the eyes he knew so well. With that one kind smile, he knew he could definitely say what he needed to...
Or... he hoped so.
"Nino-kun! Why are you out in the rain? You’re soaked!" Ohno’s mother grabbed Nino by the arm and pulled him inside before he could say anything. He wasn’t expecting Ohno’s mother to answer the door for some reason.
Nino didn’t know how long he had wandered in the rain after he made it back to his house. He would definitely wait in the warmth of his house than catch a cold. But when he saw the time, he knew Ohno must be home now, so without a second thought, Nino rushed out into the rain.
"You’re going to get sick..." he heard Ohno’s mother mumbling as she rummaged through a nearby cabinet and grabbed some towels. Remembering he still had the note in his hand, Nino quickly stuffed it in his pocket... even though he knew all the words were probably washed away.
As he awkwardly allowed Ohno’s mother to dry him off, at her request of course, Nino finally found his voice.
"Is S- Satoshi here?" Nino asked nervously, taking the towel handed to him and wiping his face of water droplets.
"Not yet. Seems like he got held up at school. He’ll be here soon, though." Ohno’s mother said warmly, wrapping the fluffy towel around Nino’s shoulders and leading him into the living room.
As he was set down on the couch and another warmer towel draped over his head like a veil, Nino suddenly grew embarrassed.
"Just wait here, I’m going to make you tea."
"Ah, actually I..." but Nino’s attempt to refuse tea was unheard as Ohno’s mother went humming happily into the kitchen.
Nino sat in the quiet, familiar living room, unmoving on the couch and starting to feel his damp clothes get cold. He pulled the towel around his shoulders a little more tightly and adjusted the towel draping over his head so he could at least see around him.
Shivering out of nervousness and cold, Nino took this time to figure out what he was going to say when Ohno walked through the door.
