Chapter 29:

My Lying Secrets

When Ohno had told Nino that he was going to be busy, he wasn’t joking. And since Nino’s baseball season had ended, with them as the top team once again, meant that Nino was out of ways to distract himself. He would run into Ohno once or twice in the hall, say a quick "hello" and then watch him dash off to someplace else.

Lunch was even more painful. Not in being lonely, but being stuck with watching Aiba and Sho being "couple-ish" and sweet, knowing he couldn’t sit in Ohno’s lap like a kitten. Nino then moved on to Jun, who he very much liked to tease just to see his reaction.

But after the one time he grabbed Jun’s ass in front of his admirers, was the last time Nino wanted to mess with Jun.

Mostly because Jun didn’t miss when he punched, and Nino had to nurse a split and badly bruised lip while his mother shook her head at him when he explained what happened, while Jun simply blamed it on his reflexes.

Nino then moved to hanging around Sho and Aiba, who seemed to be more attached to the hip than Ohno and himself ever were. They spent most of the time in the library, looking at books, studying and, according to Aiba, things that would probably get them expelled if they were caught. Though, things weren’t all perfection around Aiba and Sho.

Unlike Nino and Ohno, who just kept screwing with the student body’s mind, Aiba and Sho had let their relationship become public and faced bullying almost everyday.

Thankfully, nothing was violent and nothing seemed to get under Sho and Aiba’s skin. Nino sat in the library, wondering how Aiba had become so calm and so well behaved with just being quiet.

But once Nino tried to play football with a folded paper with Aiba and hit Sho’s eye, he was kicked out once again.

Nino wandered the school on his free time, looking for something. He missed Ohno. Ohno was never too faraway and he could always count on him to make him happy and not so lonely. So, Nino decided to stop by the art room, almost one hundred percent sure Ohno would be there.

"Satoshi...?" Nino called as he opened up the art room door, only to find Ayako on the floor painting a huge banner. She looked up and brushed her hair away from her face, not caring that paint got in it, and smiled widely at Nino.

"Nino-kun! How are you?" she asked cheerfully, waving Nino in. Nino smiled awkwardly and entered, taking a seat next to her.

"Um... have you seen Ohno-kun?" Nino asked. Ayako shook her head and returned to painting.

"No, he’s been running like crazy! I think he’s down with the Drama club now." she said casually. Nino nodded, looking around the room covered in murals.

"Oh! How’d you get that bruise?" Ayako asked, pointing to Nino’s lip. Nino laughed and touched his lip tenderly.

"I got bored... messed with MatsuJun... he said it was a reflex..." he explained slowly. Ayako giggled and changed brushes.

"Matsumoto-kun is cute, I like him a lot. He’s really a good guy, helping out Sho-kun and Aiba-kun get back together." Ayako said with a smile, steadying her hand as she painted.

"Oh, you like him?" Nino asked curiously. Ayako stopped painting and smiled at Nino.

"A bit, yeah. But he’s got all those admirers to mind and I’m not going to be here long after graduation, going to Europe and such. I don’t think getting involved would be good right now." Ayako said with a shrug.

"I think Jun-kun would love to. Maybe you should go to the Prom with him." Nino suggested. Ayako laughed and set down her paints.

"I was thinking about it. But if anything happened... I don’t know if I can handle a long distance relationship like Ohno-kun could." Ayako said with a sigh.

It took a moment for what Ayako said to sink in.

"What? What about Ohno?" Nino asked sharply. Ayako looked at Nino worriedly.

"Oh... uh oh... uh, nothing. I just think Ohno-"

"What did he tell you!?" Nino asked louder this time. Ayako stared at Nino’s panicked expression and bit her lip.

"He didn’t tell you yet... did he?" she said quietly. Nino glared at her and shook his head.

"Tell me what?" Nino asked again dangerously. Ayako stared at Nino in the thick silence, wringing her fingers nervously.

"...he’s going overseas, Nino-kun." Ayako whispered, her expression filled with worry. Nino felt his stomach turn to ice and he could barely breathe. It wasn’t long until Nino felt horribly queasy.

"A really prestigious art school in London offered us a scholarship at the start of this school year. He’s spending two years there, then finishing the program in their other school in Paris for the remaining two years with me..." Ayako finished weakly. Nino stared blankly at Ayako, trying to feel something, but nothing coming.

It was all making sense now. Why Ohno was purposely distancing himself from everyone, the teacher he met with, his mysterious trip, and leaving Nino at the café to go to dinner with his parents, most likely to meet with another teacher.

Nino shut his eyes tightly, hoping to make this all disappear.

"I can’t believe he didn’t tell you..." he heard Ayako whisper sadly. Nino looked off somewhere in the room, not really settling on anything, just roaming.

"That’s why he didn’t want to get involved..." Nino mumbled. Ayako knew she couldn’t do anything but watch Nino silently suffer. Nino didn’t know quite what to do.

He felt sick and lightheaded and something inside him seemed to break. He looked over to Ayako with his eyes unknowingly brimming with tears.

"But he didn’t tell any of us." Nino whimpered, his voice breaking into a sob. Ayako quickly wiped her hands on a nearby cloth and then softly wrapped her arms around Nino’s neck.

She whispered "I’m sorry" several times, but Nino was in too much of a shock to care.

Ohno knew the time had come, thanks to Ayako’s heads-up. Nino hadn’t spoken a word to him or even acknowledged his existence for the rest of the week. He tried catching up to him, pulling on his sleeve, looking him in the eyes and trying to talk to him.

Nothing worked and Ohno had to ask Sho, Jun and Aiba if they could see him, just in case Ohno had become a ghost without his knowing.

Now they were walking to the usual park on the weekend and Ohno was growing sick with nervousness.

"Kazu? Come on... stop ignoring me." Ohno begged. But Nino continued walking, not looking back even once.

Ohno fell back with Aiba, Sho and Jun.

"What happened with you two?" Jun asked, putting an arm around Ohno’s drooping shoulders. Ohno knew exactly what had happened but he shook his head anyway.

This was not the way he wanted to break the news. When they finally reached the field, Ohno cautiously joined Nino, faraway from the others. He sat down quietly in front of Nino, purposely blocking his view.

"I’m sorry I didn’t tell you sooner..." Ohno mumbled, looking down at his hands.

"What was this all for, then?" Nino asked sharply, glaring at Ohno. Ohno couldn’t look away from his eyes.

"...all of what?" Ohno whispered. It was stupid to ask and Ohno slapped himself for opening his mouth before thinking.

"This! Us!" Nino shouted, his voice echoing over the empty field. Ohno didn’t know quite how to respond and Nino didn’t give him much time to think.

"Was it... some pity thing?" Nino asked quietly, his voice laced with sadness. Ohno shook his head, even though he knew Nino couldn’t really see in the dark, and scooted closer to Nino.

"No, it was all real!" Ohno said sincerely. He felt Nino move away slightly and his eyes were someplace else than on Ohno.

"Do you know how stupid I feel now? After all we went through this year and you can’t even tell me something like this? And hearing it from Ayako instead of you..." Nino was definitely nearing tears if not already crying. Ohno didn’t know what else to say.

He knew he had messed up when he decided to hide that he was leaving and he knew how he would end up hurting Nino in the end.

"I wanted to be with you, I’m sorry." Ohno mumbled.

"You should have never told me how you felt... we would’ve been better off now." Nino’s voice was low, but Ohno could feel the heavy emotion he was choking on.

"I don’t think so... we would be miserable." Ohno whispered.

"More miserable than finding out you’ve been lying all this time? What was all that talk about being with me?" Nino asked weakly, trying his best to not explode.

"I said I would like to stay with you." Ohno replied, letting his frustration break through. Nino glared at him and quickly stood up, Ohno following him.

"Then don’t talk about it so sincerely if you’re just going to take it all away!" Nino spat angrily and turned to walk away, only to be grabbed back by Ohno.

"Don’t walk away this time!" Ohno demanded weakly, watching Nino’s angry tears slide down his face. Ohno couldn’t find his voice as his frustration faded away and was replaced with desperation.

His fingers tightened around Nino’s sleeves as he fought tears, trying to hold on to his last bit of hope.

"It would be pointless anyway." Nino said in a broken whisper, finding it painful to even speak. Feeling Ohno start to quiver a bit, Nino bit back tears and for the first time in his life, pushed Ohno away from him.

Ohno stared back at him with a heartbreaking look of desertion. Nino shut his eyes and turned away.

Ohno stumbled forward and caught Nino around the waist tightly, hiding his face between Nino’s shaking shoulder blades. Ohno shut his misty eyes, Nino’s suppressed sobs breaking his heart.

"Please, Kazu, stay now... I never lied about loving you." Ohno cried in a muffled whimper against Nino’s back.

"What are you trying to do? It’s over." Nino choked out. Ohno bit down on his trembling lips and looked up at the blurred image of Nino looking over his shoulder at Ohno.

In the moonlight now, Ohno could definitely see his wet eyes, somehow looking straight through him.

He knew there was no hope in getting Nino to forgive him now. He had lied knowing the consequences. Ohno ducked his head back against Nino and couldn’t help but to cry.

Ohno felt Nino’s cool hands on his wrists, slowly pulling them off of his waist. Ohno let his arms fall to his sides and stumbled forward a bit when his support was taken away.

He didn’t need to open his eyes to know what was happening. Nino was walking away, not looking back.

In the back of his mind, Ohno wondered why he wasn’t following him, continuing to plead with Nino to see it his way. But Ohno didn’t want to do that, it was pointless.

Ohno didn’t realize he had fallen to his knees in the grass and that someone wrapped their arms around him and held him close.
It took a moment to feel the warmth and he could only guess it was Jun, since he could hear Sho and Aiba calling hopelessly in confusion after Nino. Ohno clung to Jun tightly, crying shamelessly into his chest as he felt Jun rest his head on top of his.
