Chapter 30: Final

Forever Love

Ohno couldn’t take the stares of shock, disappointment, sadness and maybe anger. He looked down at his lap, his eyes puffy, bloodshot and dry and still hiccuping softly from all his crying about an hour ago.

"Next month? But what about graduation?" Sho finally broke the silence, somehow sounding too loud in the dark field.

"I was allowed to do everything early... that’s why I was so busy..." Ohno mumbled.

"You don’t know any English... or French." Jun said in confusion. Ohno nodded heavily. "I took some lessons..." he replied weakly.

"Ayako-chan is going too?" Jun asked quietly. Ohno nodded, sniffing softly.

"She’s staying in Paris for the four years..." he choked out.

"Why didn’t you tell us!? All this time we could have been having so much more fun than we have been!" Aiba finally exclaimed, on the verge of crying. He had been silent all this time, so his outburst made everyone jump.

"Don’t yell at him." Sho said calmly, patting Aiba’s knee softly.

"But it’s not fair!" he cried, finally letting his tears overflow. This of course, triggered Ohno to start again, crying as he bowed his head. Aiba cried into Sho’s shoulder and Jun took care of Ohno, putting a comforting arm around his shoulders.

"It really was selfish of you..." Jun scolded, blinking his tears away.

"Don’t say that to him." Sho said a little more sharper, scowling at Jun.

"What am I supposed to say? "Oh, this was great! We love surprises!" or "This is the best way to piss your friends off and lose your boyfriend all in one go! Congratulations~" Jun snapped sarcastically.

"He’s sitting right next to you! Why do you have to say that!?" Sho exclaimed, glaring at Jun. Jun was about to get up, but Ohno quickly pulled him back down and looked at him desperately.

"Don’t leave, okay? I don’t want everyone mad at me." Ohno cried softly, streams of tears still running over his cheeks. Jun’s angry face softened and he gently hugged Ohno.

"We’re not mad... we’re just going to miss you." Jun said quietly, trying his best to hide his tears. Aiba managed to pull away from Sho and he walked over to Ohno, sitting next to him and hugging him tightly. Sho and Jun met each other’s eyes and sighed.

"What are we going to do with Nino?" Jun asked. Sho laid his head in his hands and shrugged.

"I don’t know..." he mumbled.

"Nothing... I’m going to have to fix this if I can..." Ohno said quietly, still being held by Aiba.

"He’s not going to listen to you." Sho pointed out as softly as he could. Ohno pouted and nodded in understanding.

"If he doesn’t... then I can’t really do anything about it." Ohno sighed.

Nino listened to the students around him, whispering softly and pointing. So just because he and Ohno showed up at school separately now must mean that they had broken up? Nino scowled, okay, so maybe they had broken up... but how did the school always know?

"Ninomiya-kun?" Nino was brought back to reality when four of his female classmates, including the girl who confessed to him, stood around his desk. Nino raised his brows at the girls and they all looked at each other for support.

"We heard a rumour... did you and Ohno-san really breakup?" one asked eagerly.

"No, no. We want to know if you two really were together in the first place!" another one cut in. Nino sighed and leaned back in his chair.

"It’s none of your business." Nino said sternly.

"But we want to know. If you were single, Satomi-chan could ask you out now, right?" the girl closest to Nino asked, nudging the girl Satomi closer. Nino crossed his arms and looked away.

"No." the girls stood speechless at Nino’s simple but sharp comment. Nino then excused himself and walked out of the classroom. It had taken a few days to finally comprehend what had happened and to finally calm down enough to think.

When he had left the park on the weekend, hearing Ohno crying and seeing his painful face, it took all he had not to turn around and make it all better. He couldn’t deny that he was happy for Ohno, after all, he said he would be happy with anything Ohno wanted to do. But why so faraway?

Nino walked the halls in a daze, wondering what he would do now. He had officially ended his relationship with Ohno and couldn’t find enough caring in his mind to apologize.

After crying over the sudden news for almost two days, Nino grew angry and introverted for most of the week. He had ignored everyone, including Sho, Aiba and Jun, who came to him to ask how he was doing, at school and at home. But Nino simply remained silent.

Now, as he walked along, not caring to glance at students hanging up colourful posters advertising the upcoming Prom, Nino felt nothing. He secretly wondered if he finally blown a fuse. When he looked up next, he found himself across the hall from the art room, it’s door open and some students waving good-bye to someone with lunches in their hands.

Nino swallowed, hoping Ohno would come out of the room. He hadn’t seen or heard him since the past weekend and he was growing anxious. But the only person that came out of the room was Ayako, juggling her lunch and bag with a strange gracefulness. Watching Ayako balance everything, Nino decided to help her.

"Oh, Nino-kun!" Ayako smiled as she spotted Nino walking towards her.

"Here, I’ll take this." Nino said, taking her lunch and a few books from her arms. Ayako thanked him and then her face grew sad.

"I heard about you and Ohno-kun... I’m sorry it ended like that." she said softly, starting to walk at a slow pace. Nino didn’t say anything, only nodded.

"He’s pretty down as well... he had to give up his role in drama because he won’t be here-"

"Why did he tell you and not me?" Nino suddenly asked. Ayako stopped and looked at Nino behind her.

"I don’t know... I told him to. I told him that hiding the truth would hurt you in the end, but... I think, he just wanted to enjoy time with you." Ayako said thoughtfully.

"If you call lying enjoying time..." Nino muttered. Ayako frowned and sighed.

"Nino-kun. What would you have done in his place? Think of all the things he had on his mind, school, college, graduation, drama, art, homework, projects, and sorting out all the relationship issues with you. You are the one thing that made dealing with all that a little easier in the end. If he told you about leaving in the beginning, you would have never become so important in his life." Ayako told Nino. Nino considered her words seriously for a moment, knowing she was right and making him feel like a jerk.

"I wouldn’t have lied." Nino mumbled, looking away from Ayako. Ayako smiled and shook her head.

"Nino-kun! Stop being stubborn. We always say what we would do in a situation, but when it actually happens, it always changes." she smiled at Nino, who narrowed his eyes suspiciously at her.

"You’re a little creepy, Ayako-chan..." Nino admitted slowly. Ayako took her lunch and books from Nino with a playful pout.

"And you’re so charming, Nino-kun." she said sarcastically.

"Oh, by the way. I’m going to Prom with Matsumoto-kun." Ayako said cheerfully. Nino smiled and congratulated her. She started to walk away, but then turned around again.

"Have you stopped by the student art gallery down stairs?"

"No..."

"Stop by there when you leave. You might find something worthwhile." Ayako left Nino with a sly smile and wink before she juggled her way down the hall.

Having never been to the student art gallery, Nino managed to get lost and wandered aimlessly for awhile until finally finding it. He looked around the walls, guessing that something of Ohno’s was down here, and soon his eyes landed on a larger canvas near the back.

He walked over to it, something inside him growing warm.

This canvas wasn’t as big as Nino thought, but it was painted differently. While most of Ohno’s paintings were abstract and cartoonish, this one was painted with startling realism. There were two shadows, lying side by side in a dark green swirl that was most likely the grass. Nino knew instantly who those two figures were, even though Ohno had painted them to be ambiguous. The sky was a deep blue and purples, white stars scattered across, almost twinkling if Nino looked at them long enough.

Nino looked over the painting, top to bottom, his vision starting to blur and his eyes stinging with tears. He bent down a little and read the little note that Ohno had written about the painting. It was left untitled and there was only one sentence above his signature.

"One day you and I will reach that future painted in the sky."

Nino knew he was being selfish again. Only thinking about his own heartbreak and his own pain. For the entire week he had never thought once of what Ohno might be feeling. Ohno was leaving everyone behind, he was going to someplace strange alone. And all Nino could think about was how Ohno had lied to him.

Nino hung his head and frowned deeply. He wasn’t going to let himself lose Ohno again. Nino stood back up and sighed loudly just as the bell rang for the end of the lunch hour. With one last look at the painting, Nino knew he had to mend things with Ohno. He wasn’t going to stand by and let Ohno leave without letting him know how much he loved him as well.

"Nino-kun." Nino looked up from changing his shoes to see Jun looking down at him sternly.

"I’m not going to force you and we aren’t going to interfere, but-"

"I’m going to see Ohno now... and congratulations with Ayako-chan." Nino cut him off, closing his locker softly. Jun nodded and tried to hide a smile, but couldn’t help himself. Nino smirked at his sudden shyness and told him good-bye.

Nino walked swiftly around the crowds of students, darting past Sho giving Aiba a piggyback ride, and stopping only when Aiba shouted his name.

"Where are you going?" Aiba asked him as Sho finally caught up.

"To see Ohno." Nino said as best as he could as his heart raced in his chest.

"Oh, yay! Are you going to get back together!?" Aiba exclaimed, jumping off from Sho’s back. Nino shrugged and kept up his quick pace.

"We’ll see how it goes." Nino answered with a smile. Aiba cheered again and Nino couldn’t help but to feel excited and more hopeful than he had been the whole week. Aiba and Sho watched him rush off, waving good-bye with a smile.

"You think he saw Ohno’s painting?" Sho asked Aiba. Aiba grinned and nodded.

"Of course he did. That’s why he’s going to see him, right?" Sho said happily as he reached out his hand, stopping Aiba in his tracks. He stared down at Sho’s hand and then back to his bright eyes.

"It’ll give my back a break from carrying you." Sho insisted. Aiba eagerly took Sho’s hand and smiled.

"Finally, I think everything is going to be all right." Aiba laughed, tightening his hold on Sho’s hand and cuddling up to him.

Whatever excitement Nino felt before, had somehow turned into a nauseating nervousness when he reached Ohno’s home. He stood outside, staring at the doorbell for nearly five minutes, his finger hovering above it. Squeezing his eyes shut, he finally pressed it and stood back. Soon enough, Nino was face to face with Ohno’s mother.

"Nino-kun! Have you come to see Satoshi?" she asked kindly. Nino was silent for a second, trying to remember exactly why he came.

"If he’s not busy..." Nino said quietly. Ohno’s mother ushered him in, taking his school bag for him and leading him into the house.

"Don’t mind the mess, we’re in the middle of packing." she said as they passed a few stacked boxes that Nino knew where Ohno’s. His heart sank a bit.

"He’s in his room." Ohnos mother said before she disappeared somewhere in the house. Nino nodded and looked up the stairs, dreading what was to come. But he pushed on, climbing each stair like it was a mountain. Ohno’s bedroom door came into view and Nino steadied his hands as he reached for the knob. He pulled back nervously, rubbed his hands on his pants, took a deep breath and opened his eyes.

But when he did, he was face to face with Ohno as he opened the door. Everything came to a standstill around them. Nino swallowed hard and Ohno waited silently. Ohno knew by the soft look in Nino’s eyes that he had seen the painting and it had spoken to him, just as Ohno hoped it would.

"...I saw the painting..." Nino started awkwardly, earning little more than a nod from Ohno.

"I... I was selfish again... I never thought about you." Nino mumbled. Ohno looked at him curiously, clearly tired of everything going on.

"...I never thought about myself either." Ohno responded, a little colder than Nino was used to hearing. Nino knew this situation could turn sour with anything he said wrongly. He knew he could snap and Ohno wouldn’t want anything to do with him.

"You kept it secret to not lose me... and I didn’t see it." Nino apologized, his eyes dropping to the floor and sniffing. Ohno smiled to himself and waited.

"I caused all this... didn’t I?" Nino suddenly said, looking up with a sad smile. Ohno snickered and leaned against his door frame, chewing on a fingernail in thought.

"Mmm... we both did..." he mumbled, watching Nino’s mouth tremble a little. Ohno opened his mouth to say something, but Nino took a quick step forward.

"Satoshi..." he almost pleaded, his overwhelming emotion trying to force it’s way out. Ohno sighed and smirked.

"Kazunari?" Ohno asked curiously after Nino had stopped talking all together. Swallowing his tears again, Nino closed his eyes to compose himself and then opened them to look right at Ohno.

"...why do you still love me after all I put you through?" Nino asked quietly. Ohno’s tired face broke into a smile and he stepped forward slowly.

"Because you still love me." Ohno replied, folding his arms around Nino’s frozen body tightly. Ohno waited patiently for Nino to respond. He let one of his hands curl into Nino’s hair and gently patted his head, letting him know it was really all okay now. Feeling this and Ohno’s soft breath against his cheek, Nino let himself finally breakdown, burying his head into Ohno’s shoulder and relying on him to keep him standing.

"I’m sorry..." Nino half sobbed and half whispered, over and over. Ohno smiled to himself and kissed the side of Nino’s head tenderly before gently leading Nino away into his room.

Nino looked at the nearly empty room with boxes here and there.

He didn’t really recognize the room without Ohno’s belongings... Nino knew then it wasn’t a dream and that Ohno really was going away.

Ohno softly shut the door and Nino was glad he did, because he really didn’t feel like explaining the whole thing to Ohno’s mother if she somehow overheard crying. Ohno turned around from his door and smirked tearfully at Nino.

Nino smiled through his tears and found his way back into Ohno’s arms. Ohno held Nino’s weeping face to his, just gazing into Nino’s eyes.

In reality, the two hadn’t been officially together for more than two months, but to them it felt like forever. Ohno was regretting all the time he wasted just trying to figure things out and being too scared to love Nino.

All the wasted time they could have spent together.

Ohno blinked his tears from his eyes and kissed Nino’s quivering lips softly, moving across his wet cheeks and settling by his ear.

"I love you." Ohno says in a warm whisper, letting his few tears leak from his eyes. Nino just holds Ohno more tightly, never wanting to let go. Nino mumbles something in return but his voice is so low and choked with tears that Ohno can’t make it out.

But he doesn’t need to know. He knew what Nino said and that was enough.

The two sat on the bedroom floor glowing gold in the late afternoon, snuggled closely together, their hands linked. They haven’t spoken for quite awhile but that was okay. Nino had stopped crying and he was leaning his head on Ohno’s shoulder, tracing lazy patterns with his fingers across Ohno’s leg.

Ohno had his eyes closed, breathing evenly into Nino’s hair, remembering every scent. Nino shifts a bit and Ohno opens his eyes, looking down at him.

"I’m going to miss you." Nino suddenly whispers, his voice a little hoarse. Ohno doesn’t move except for squeezing Nino’s hand. Ohno kisses him again and then closes his eyes.

"I’ll miss you too." Ohno replies with all his heart. Silence falls again and neither is uncomfortable with it. They like the silence for once, just being able to feel each other.

Ohno wonders if he should say something, not knowing that Nino is thinking the same thing. But they both just smile and forget it. Words never really got them anywhere in the first place.
