I dunno, really - I think some Trek fans are entirely too precious about it. Who gives a wet slap, eh? Trekker, Trekkie... I'm perfectly happy with either... :-)
I thought it was a lousy film, typical of hollywood today - no plot, lots of nice effects, and a bit of slapstick or exposition to stop the audience realising it.
Well, it wouldn't do if we were all the same... ;-) I suppose it all depends what you want from a film and whether the way the film is directed works for you or not. Personally it hit the right spot for me: I don't go to see Trek to see something truly profound, after all. Perhaps I'm easily pleased. The fact remains, though, that I *was* well pleased. I'm trying to think of the last time I went to the cinema and had as much fun... and I can't remember. Years - years and years - ago, it must be.
In all seriousness, I'll happily admit that my die-hard Trek fandom probably enhanced my opinion of it - but then that should hardly be a surprise, since if you like previous films in any given franchise, a new instalment has to be pretty bloody awful to colour your opinion of it enough for you to say it was outright bad. I'd argue the "no plot" point, though: by that criteria I would say that most sci-fi films (in fact many of the films I've seen in recent years) have no plot either. Plenty happened, and if you could boil down the plot to

I actually thought it was good for 40 minutes or so, although it was a bit odd seeing actors playing actors playing characters - but then it started to fall apart when the the main event started. I get very bored with these hollywood chase/set piece movies to be honest
