Short Stories

I was wondering if anybody could suggest a good anthology/collection of short stories. I just don't have enough free time to read full novels during the semester. So, I figure short stories are a good way to still read, but not feel like I'm constantly leaving what I started unfinished. I highly recommend No one belongs here more than you by Miranda July.

Vonnegut's short story collections are great, especially Welcome to the Monkey House.

Philip K. Dick's stories are all quite short, sparse, and there's a ton of collections out there.

I second No One Belongs Here More Than You.

Also, Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been? by Joyce Carol Oates is an amazing collection of short stories.

I just read "Nine Stories" by Salinger, which I thought was brilliant. I'm reading Chekhov at the moment as well, who writes nice stories as well (but I'm not as head over heels as I am with his plays). Also I really enjoyed Hermann Hesse's "Fairytales", but I'm not sure if you'll like them. I also recently read "The Bloody Chamber" by Angela Carter, retellings of fairytales and with gorgeous, lush prose.

I haven't started it yet, but I've heard a lot of good things about "My Mistress's Sparrow Is Dead", an anthology edited by Jeffrey Eugenides.

You can always check out literary magazines. There are some good ones publishing some great new contemporary writing.

As for authors, Roald Dahl writes great short stories for adults and children alike. He has several short story compilations out there.

Those _Best American Short Stories_ books are pretty good - I read the one edited by Stephen King (2008?) and enjoyed it.
