Chapter One:
Hyunseung was certain that it couldn’t be the same person. His eyes were locked on the Nanny Needed ad in the newspaper. The employer was a man named Yong Junhyung. He blinked a few times, trying to get over the fact that it might be the man he went to high school with, the man he had admired. Now, in his mid twenties, he needed a nanny?
“Who did he marry?” he asked aloud, not paying attention that his roommate was staring at him. Hyunseung frowned. “I don’t know if he’d hire me…”
“You never know until you try,” Doojoon said, placing a plate of food in front of the younger. He looked over his shoulder. “Woonie, lunch is ready!” The youngest walked in, grabbed Doojoon around his neck, and kissed him.
Dongwoon parted their lips, turning his smoldering eyes on Hyunseung. “Hyunseung, remember that this is mine,” he said, hugging the eldest tightly.
Hyunseung laughed. “I know, Dongwoon, I know.” He brushed his hair out of his eyes. “Besides, I’m not gay.”
“Then what about that guy from high school?” Doojoon’s question had Hyunseung choking on his coffee.
“You liked a guy in high school, hyung?”
“No!” Hyunseung glared at Doojoon and Dongwoon, trying to prove his point. “I am absolutely not gay! Now drop it!” He stood up and exited the kitchen. He went to his room, closing the door behind him. “I am not gay, nor have I ever liked a guy!” He was in the middle of changing when Dongwoon walked in.
“Yah, hyung!” The youngest opened the door and entered his room without knocking.
Hyunseung froze, his shirt pulled halfway off. His eyes widened. “Yah, Doojoon! Get your boyfriend out-”
“Shhh!” Dongwoon covered the elder’s mouth. “Since when did you have a nice body?” He ran his hand over Hyunseung’s torso.
“Yah!” Pushing Dongwoon away, he sighed when Doojoon walked in to see the youngest thrown to the floor.
“Hyunseung!” Doojoon rushed over to his boyfriend and kneeled. “Are you okay, Woonie? Are you hurt?”
“Only my pride.” Staring up, he pouted. “Doojoon, he shoved me…”
“I don’t have time for this.” They looked over when Hyunseung stomped toward his closet, pulling the door open. “I need to hurry so that I can get this job. With any luck I’ll be able to move out of this dump.”
“Yah, last week you were happy to have this dump when your girlfriend’s fiancé threw you out.” Dongwoon laughed at the eldest’s statement.
“His girlfriend had a fiancé?” Still laughing, Dongwoon climbed to his feet. “You’re so lame that you chose a girl who was getting married? That’s too funny, hyung!”
“Shut up, Dongwoon!” Pulling on a clean shirt, Hyunseung grabbed his wallet. “I don’t know when I’ll be back. Don’t wait up for me.” Hyunseung started to leave his room when his friend pulled him backward.
“Where is my goodbye kiss?” Doojoon joked. Dongwoon laughed at his boyfriend’s idea of a joke and the look on their friend’s face.
Hyunseung rolled his eyes, an idea forming in his head. Instead of stomping away like he usually did, he grabbed Doojoon’s face and kissed him. The sudden uncharacteristic act caused Dongwoon to gasp and Doojoon to squeak. Hyunseung let go of the eldest’s face, wiping his lips on the back of his hand.
“Happy? There’s your stupid goodbye kiss!” He walked around the elder and left the apartment. When he was on the bus, he rubbed at his lips, trying to rid himself of the feeling of Doojoon’s lips. “Why did I do that?” He gazed out the window, hoping that Junhyung wouldn’t recognize him.
After the hour long bus ride, Hyunseung stretched on the sidewalk, unsure of the place he was at. He glanced at his surroundings, noticing all of the upscale, classy mansions in the area. Taking uneasy steps, he managed to locate Yong Junhyung’s mansion. He cringed at the high chiming doorbell. He heard something inside crash to the floor, then someone hollered before answering the door.
“Hello?” the man asked.
It’s him, Hyunseung thought to himself.
“Hello, I’m here about an ad in the newspaper about-”
“About the nanny position?”
“Yes.”
Junhyung eyed him for a few minutes, taking in the normal attire he wore and his sneakers. He smirked. “What makes you think you can handle this position?”
“What?” Hyunseung’s mind had gone blank the moment Junhyung starting looking at him.
Chuckling, Junhyung crossed his arms. “What makes you think you can-”
“Appa!” a kid yelled. The voice made Hyunseung jump. “Appa, Seobbie is being mean to me!” The kid was about seven years old, black hair, and had Egyptian eyes. He pouted. “Appa…”
“Kikwang, can’t you see that I’m busy right now?” He knelt to look his son in the eyes. “Go tell Yoseob to be nice or else he’ll go to his room without supper.”
“Okay!” Kikwang ran off, running down the corridor and screaming for his brother.
“Sorry about that.” Junhyung looked at Hyunseung. “You feeling alright? You look sort of pale.”
Throwing his hands up when the younger went to touch his forehead, Hyunseung took a step back. “I’m fine. Just a little dizzy. It’ll pass soon.”
“Are you sure?” Hearing the worry in the younger’s voice made him laugh. “What’s so funny?”
“You worrying over me!” Hyunseung laughed again before finally composing himself. “I’m sorry, I’m sorry. It’s just that nobody’s worried much over me.”
“What about when you were little?”
Hyunseung shook his head. “Not really. My parents were always at work. When they were home, they fought.” He mentally scolded himself for willingly spitting out information.
“Would you like to come in?”
“That won’t be necessary. I just came by to apply for the job. And now since I’ve done that, I’ll just be going.” Hyunseung turned and started to leave.
“Wait!” The younger grabbed his wrist, forcing him to stop. “You can start tomorrow. Get your things packed tonight. I’ll be over to help you move them around eleven, so-”
“My roommate can help me move my things. I don’t have many, so it won’t be a problem for him.” He smiled a little, prying Junhyung’s hand off. “I’ll see you tomorrow, Mr. Yong.” He nodded sharply before walking away. He hurried to the bus stop down the road a little ways.
My heart was thumping like crazy, he thought silently. He placed his hand over his heart, feeling the rhythmic thumping. He was surprised that his heart rate still hadn’t returned to normal. Why is my heart thumping like this?
“Yah, there won’t be another bus for three hours.” Hearing Junhyung’s voice made him jump. When he looked over at the younger, standing with his two sons, his eyes were wider than they normally were.
“I-I can wait for it…”
“Or I could take you home.” Hyunseung shook his head, dismissing the idea. Junhyung frowned. “Why not?”
“You wouldn’t last two minutes in my apartment building, Mr. Yong.” He smiled sadly at him. “And my roommate might hit on you considering you’re not that bad looking.”
Junhyung smirked. “Are you saying that I’m hot?”
“Appa!” Kikwang and Yoseob groaned in unison. Hyunseung laughed.
“It looks like your sons don’t think so.”
“They’ve never seen me at my best.”
“Are you saying that this is your best?”
Junhyung grinned at the elder before leaning closer to whisper to him. “Are you implying that you want to see me at my best?”
Shying away, Hyunseung shook his head again. “Sorry, but no.” He looked straight into the younger’s eyes. “I’m not gay.”
“How did you know that Appa likes men?” the little blond boy asked.
“I’m accurate at guessing these things.” He looked away from the little family, his eyes ghosting over the nearly deserted street. When he looked back at them, he smiled. “I’ll accept your ride back to my apartment. My roommate probably left on a date or something.”
“Alright.” Junhyung looked at his sons. “Wait here, okay? I’ll go get the car.”
“Okay!” Once Junhyung walked away, Kikwang plopped down on the bench beside Hyunseung. “So, you’re going to be our nanny?”
“Yes.” After a second of thinking, he looked at the boy seriously. “I think you should just call me your caretaker. Saying you have a male nanny would sound weird to your friends.”
“Oh, good thinking!” Kikwang smiled. “We’ll be best friends!”
Junhyung pulled up to the curb, climbing out to open the door for his sons to get into the backseat. “Buckle up, you two.” He looked at Hyunseung. “Is there a problem with my car?”
“None whatsoever.”
“Then get in.”
Nodding, Hyunseung got into the passenger seat of the sports car. He fastened the seatbelt before staring out of the window. The entire ride to the apartment complex was quiet except for Hyunseung giving directions. Once arriving, he noticed that Doojoon’s car was missing. He rolled his eyes knowing that the two had gone off on another date.
“You can just pull up to the door. I can get out there.”
“Appa, I have to go potty!” Yoseob whined.
“Do you think you can hold it until we get home?” Junhyung asked, staring at his son’s reflection in the rearview mirror.
“No. I have to go really bad!”
Junhyung sighed before turning pleading eyes on Hyunseung. “Do you think Yoseob could use your bathroom?”
“Sure. I’ll show you in.” Hyunseung climbed out, closing the door to the car a little too roughly. He hadn’t witnessed the glare the younger shot at him for the treatment of his vehicle. After leading them up four flights of stairs, down to the very end of the hallway, and inside, he pointed to the small hall in the apartment. “It’s the very last door on the right.”
“Thanks!” Yoseob rushed off for it, accidentally bumping into someone walking in the opposite direction. He screamed. “Ahhhh! Scary lady!” He darted back to the living room, ducking behind Junhyung.
Hyunseung walked toward the hall, his eyes widening at who was in his apartment. “Min Jee, what are you doing here?”
She stood in the middle of the hall, arms crossed. “Hyunseung, I wanted to see you again. I want to keep seeing you,” Min Jee stated. She approached him, pulling him in for a hug. “I miss you, Seungie.”
He grabbed her shoulders and forced her away. “Well, I don’t want to see you.” His eyes were cold as he glared at her. “Now or after your wedding. You made your choice, now live with it.”
“But I agreed to marry him before I met you! It’s not fair. Maybe I can tell him that I don’t want to marry him and stay with you! Hyunseung, I lo-”
“Get out of my apartment, Min Jee. You only want what you can’t have. You’d get tired of me at some point, too, and go running off with some other man who piqued your interest.”
“But, honey, I-”
“Get out.” Hyunseung pointed to the door, turning away from her. Once she left, he went into the kitchen, turning the coffee pot on. The chair legs scraped the floor as he pulled it out. Sitting down, he buried his face in his arms.
“Are you okay?” Junhyung asked.
“I’m fine. Have your son use the bathroom and leave.”
“Do you want to talk about it?” Junhyung nudged his sons toward the bathroom, walking into the kitchen and leaning against the counter. After five minutes, Junhyung was about to gave up when he heard the elder man sniffle.
“I loved her. She was the only thing that kept me rooted, the only person who made me want to stay here.” He turned his face toward the wall, staring intently at the photo hanging there. “She called me a week ago, saying that she never wanted to see me again. She told me that her fiancé was better than me in every way, that she hoped I’d disappear.”
“What was your response to her saying that?”
“I was going to do what she wanted. I knew of two ways to disappear. One was to leave the country, start over somewhere else.”
“What was the other way…?”
“To die somehow.”
Junhyung’s stomach knotted up at the thought of seeing the man in front of him dead. It disturbed him even more since he didn’t know why it would matter to him. “You can’t do that. Never allow someone else to say you’re not worth anything.”
Hyunseung smiled sadly as he turned to look at Junhyung. “I’m still here aren’t I? I don’t break so easily. And even if I did, I wouldn’t allow her the satisfaction of ever seeing me as a wreck.”
Junhyung smiled at the elder’s determination on remaining strong, even if it was only strong in front of others. He couldn’t help but feel some amount of respect for Hyunseung already. One thing in particular caught his attention. The elder spoke to him as if they had known each other before today.
