Chapter Two:
Sungmin helped the other to his feet, holding him tightly around the waist. He pulled his phone out and dialed the only number he could think of, not caring about what would happen after the person arrived.
“Heechul, someone jumped Wookie. We’re in an alley near your parents’ house. Can you come pick us up?” he asked into his phone. Relief nearly radiated from him as he heard Heechul yelling at the person he was with to drive faster. “We’ll be here. Thanks, Heechul.” Hanging up, he looked back at Ryeowook. “Heechul is coming to pick us up. You have to stay awake until he gets here.”
Coughing, Ryeowook felt his eyelids getting heavier. “C-can’t I just sleep, Minnie?” he replied, his voice a little hoarse. He closed his eyes.
“No, Wookie. I’m sorry, but you can’t sleep. Please, stay awake.” He shook the other gently. “Wook. Come on, Wookie, stay awake.”
“Minnie, I’m sleepy.”
Leaning against the brick building behind them, Sungmin hugged Ryeowook tighter, making sure he wouldn’t fall. “Wook, you can sleep after Heechul gets here, so please stay awake.” Not a minute later tires were screeching to a halt, a slick black mustang stopped by the alley. Heechul had climbed out of the passenger seat, the foreigner from earlier behind the wheel.
“Minnie, who the hell jumped Wookie?” Heechul demanded, rushing over.
“I don’t know. He wouldn’t tell me,” the younger replied, too worried to be startled by the elder at the time. “Help me get him to my place so he can rest.”
Heechul shook his head. “He needs to be cared for by a doctor.” Looking over his shoulder, Heechul saw Hankyung getting out of the car. “Han, get a doctor on the phone. Wookie needs help.”
Feeling a bit sad at the way Heechul reacted at the boy, Hankyung pushed his thoughts aside as he dialed a number. “Is doctor Park in? I know that he’s a busy man, but this is urgent. Tell him that it’s Han.” After waiting for the phone to be handed to doctor Park, Hankyung sighed. “Teuk, it’s Han. Chul and I need your help with something.”
Sungmin and Heechul got Ryeowook into the back of the car and Heechul stayed back with him, making Sungmin get up front. He looked down worriedly at Ryeowook, pushing his hair out of his face. Ryeowook quickly slipped unconscious in his lap. Hankyung looked back at them through the rear view mirror sadly. Sungmin bit his lip as he saw the hospital come into view. It was all a blur to Hankyung. Someone else cut off the car because Heechul was yelling at him to carry Ryeowook inside. Sungmin was chattering at 100 miles an hour and then Leeteuk was there, directing him to put Ryeowook down so he could check over him.
The three of them watched anxiously as Leeteuk used a wet cloth to gently get rid of the dirt and blood on Ryeowook's skin. He was bruising all over. "Hankyung, help me get his clothes off please," he said. Heechul frowned as Hankyung complied. Leeteuk cleaned him up quickly and put ointment and bandages on the worst cuts. The rest he cleaned and left bare. "I'm going to have to get him up to Radiology for some X-Rays to check any internal damage, but whoever did this really had it out for him. Before I take him up for X-Rays though, I have to take care of this concussion.... He should be fine, but he's exhausted and rightfully scared. I'll give him a relaxer when we come back down," he said pushing Ryeowook's bed, with the help of another worker, out of the room.
Sungmin frowned. "I'm glad I called you, Chul.... I panicked. I couldn't think what to do......" Sungmin said honestly. Hankyung frowned before getting up and leaving the room. Heechul watched him leave before he sighed.
"I'll be back Sungmin...... If they bring Ryeowook back before I come back, which I doubt, tell him I'll be right back," he said frowning. Sungmin nodded and Heechul left the room.
He walked outside and found Hankyung by their car. He was smoking when Heechul walked up to him. "What's your problem exactly?" he asked.
Hankyung exhaled smoke before looking at him. "I didn't come back from China to watch you with someone else..... You're mine...." he said, one arm coming around Heechul's waist. Heechul looked away angrily for a moment before he looked back up at Hankyung. "I love you Hannie..... you know that.... don't worry about it Ryeowook's just...... I'm protective of him, alright?" he assured.
Smiling at Heechul, Hankyung flicked his cigarette away from them. “Let’s go back inside and wait for him.” Once they started walking, the smile disappeared from his face. He knew he should trust Heechul, but he couldn’t trust him like he used to. Things weren’t the same after Heechul got held back while he went back to China.
Inside, Sungmin was pacing in the waiting room, gnawing on his bottom lip. He kept mumbling to himself about who could have injured Ryeowook, always drawing a blank. Running his fingers through his hair, he didn’t notice the older two returning until Heechul tapped his shoulder, making him jump.
“You’re going to wear a trench in the ground if you keep pacing,” Heechul told him. “Sit down, Minnie.”
“I can’t. I’m worried about Wook.” Returning to his pacing, he chose to speak with them about who could have done this. “Who would ever want to hurt Wookie? I mean, sure his temper can get bad at times, but not to the point where he’d make someone attack him.”
Several minutes passed by and Heechul was beginning to get frustrated with the younger’s pacing and mumbling. Standing, he grabbed Sungmin’s shoulders and forced him to sit in the spot he vacated. “Sit still, Sungmin! Ryeowook will be fine. Your constant pacing and grumbles are starting to annoy me.”
Staring at the elder through his bangs, Sungmin only nodded. When Ryeowook lost his temper, Sungmin could deal with it. When Heechul lost his temper, nobody could deal with it. He sat there, eyes wide as Heechul walked to a vending machine and scanned its contents. Hankyung eyed the person next to him carefully before deciding to speak.
“Don’t be too mad at Chul. He means well, but he can be a bit wild sometimes,” he said. “By the way, in all this chaos we haven’t been introduced. I’m Hankyung.”
“I’m Sungmin.” Hearing squeaky wheels rolling toward them, Sungmin stood when he saw Leeteuk pushing Ryeowook’s gurney. “H-how is he?”
“The x-rays showed that he has a few cracked ribs, but nothing too serious. We’ve wrapped them so they’ll heal correctly. He’ll be staying here until he regains consciousness and he needs to stay in bed for a few days when he gets home. Bring him back in two weeks after he’s released and we’ll check the way his ribs are healing.”
“Okay.” Even to his own ears, Sungmin could tell his voice sounded dead. “I’ll take him to my place so I can keep an eye on him.”
“For now, we’ll admit him to a room until he wakes up. Feel free to stay with him until he does.” Leeteuk smiled. “When he wakes up, call a nurse and we’ll check to see if he can leave.”
Sungmin followed the nurse to Ryeowook’s temporary room while Leeteuk stood with Heechul and Hankyung in the waiting room. Things were a bit awkward between the three since they had nothing to really say to each other. Heechul nudged Hankyung, motioning toward the door.
“Let’s go, Hannie. I want to go back to that alley to see if there are any clues as to who jumped Wookie.”
“Okay.” Hankyung turned to Leeteuk, a smile on his lips. He pecked the elder quickly on the cheek although his intentions behind it weren’t exactly pure. When Leeteuk smiled, Heechul felt his blood boil a little. “Thanks for tending to him, Teuk.”
“No problem, Hankyung. I’m a doctor, it’s my job.”
Waving their goodbyes, Hankyung climbed in behind the wheel as Heechul fastened his seatbelt. He knew the other would start his tirade as soon as they had pulled out of the parking lot. He just sat and counted the seconds until Heechul lost his temper.
“What the hell was that, Hankyung?! Why the hell did you kiss him?” Heechul growled, his anger rising when he noticed the other nearly ignoring him. “Pull over and let me out, Hankyung.”
“No.” Hankyung grasped Heechul’s hand and placed his lips to the back of it. “Besides, I didn’t kiss him, Chul. I don’t kiss anyone but you.”
Jerking his hand away, Heechul literally growled at him. "What the fuck do you call it then? Your lips were on his face, you kissed him!" he growled, looking out the window. He shrieked. It was becoming clear to Hankyung that this was one of Heechul's tempers he wasn't going to get free of for a while.
"Chul, he's just a childhood friend. We're like brothers. And besides... can't I act that way towards him? You have Ryeowook," Hankyung said, getting irritated also. Heechul unbuckled his seat belt and opened the door, causing Hankyung to slam on breaks. "Where are you going?!" he asked, his accent thick in his panic.
"I'm going to the alley.... you should go home," he said slamming the door before walking across the street to the sidewalk. People looked at his vehicle, wondering if it was a breakup, thinking Heechul was a girl. Hankyung floored it and headed home, absolutely furious. He looked in his rear view mirror just as Heechul shot him the bird.
At he hospital, Sungmin sat in the chair next to Ryeowook's bed. He held the latter's hand, waiting on him to wake up. He was about to doze off himself when he felt a small tug. He looked up to see Ryeowook beginning to wake up. He made an uncharacteristic sound due to the pain, but blinked sleepily at the now standing Sungmin.
"Wook! You're alright!" he squeaked. He wanted to shout it but he was so relieved and excited that it didn't come out that way. Ryeowook smiled a bit.
"I'm in a hospital... I hate hospitals.... Why'd you bring me here Minnie?" he asked. "Why?... You were hurt," he said.
"I know...... Don't ask who did it because I won't tell you," he added quickly.
Sungmin pouted before placing a kiss on Ryeowook's forehead. "You're my best friend, I can't help but worry," he said.
"I'll be okay," he said smiling. Sungmin pressed the button for a nurse, or hopefully Leeteuk. Sungmin didn't like all those snobby bitches who jerk the patients around because they were in a hurry.
Heechul turned into the alley that he found Sungmin in and frowned, crouching down on the ground. It was still dotted with Ryeowook's blood. He gritted his teeth in anger. His eyes darted around the alley, looking for something, anything, that he could use. He spun around when he heard someone in the alley, eyes narrowing. It was one of the seniors who had graduated the previous year.
“Well, if it isn’t Heechul,” he said, licking his lips.
“Go to hell, Kangin,” Heechul spat. “I’m busy right now. Just leave.” Turning back to scan the ground, he ignored Kangin. With his back to the other, he didn’t see him advance on him. Being shoved against the brick wall, Heechul tried to flail free. “Let go, bastard.”
“No, I don’t want to. Every time I asked you to hang out, you opted to hang out with that shitty foreigner. Tell me something, Heechul, where’s your precious foreigner now?” He laughed at Heechul trying to break his hold. Pinning Heechul’s arms above their heads, he smirked.
“You have one last chance to let me go, Kangin, before I get really pissed. Today is not the day to mess with me.”
“All those times you were nothing but a tease…but now, now there’s nowhere for you to go.” Just as Kangin grabbed a fistful of Heechul’s shirt, tires squealed to a halt in the alley. He glared at the man on the motorcycle, a blurry memory slowly drifting back to him.
“Let him go,” Hankyung ordered, removing his helmet. His eyes were dark, hatred turning them stony. “You do not want to test my patience today.”
Smirking to taunt the other, Kangin pulled on Heechul’s shirt. The ripping fabric floated to the ground. Kangin laughed when Hankyung’s eyes narrowed. “What’s wrong, Hankyung? Do you feel useless while your playmate is beside me?”
“He isn’t next to you by choice.”
“Oh? What if he is?” Kangin smirked at the defeated look making its way onto Hankyung’s face. “He was a bit of a whore in school, wasn’t he? Some things never change.”
Seeing the look on Hankyung’s face, Heechul felt worried. Staring into Hankyung’s face, he saw the pain Kangin’s words had caused. He struggled against Kangin’s hold again, trying to get free while the other was distracted.
“Let go, bitch!” he growled.
Getting annoyed, Kangin pulled out a small pocketknife before placing the blade to Heechul’s back. “You struggle any more and this blade will cut you.” He smiled in victory as Heechul stood still.
Hankyung stood just a few feet away, staring at Heechul. Once he received the pleading look the other shot him, he felt his body moving. As if by some other force, he threw his helmet at Kangin, knocking him away from Heechul. Using his skilled martial arts, he knocked the other to the ground, the knife flying down the alley.
“You come near him again and I’ll kill you,” Hankyung warned. He snatched his helmet from beside Kangin before turning to Heechul. Tugging the helmet into place, he slid out of his jacket before draping it around Heechul’s shoulders. “Let’s go.”
Walking to the motorcycle, Heechul didn’t even glance back at Kangin, fearing that he’d try to attack them. Sitting behind Hankyung, he wrapped his arms tightly around his waist. After a few minutes, they reached Hankyung’s Korean home. Heechul allowed Hankyung to lead him inside before he started speaking.
“Hannie, how did you know Kangin would be there?” he asked, his voice a mere whisper.
“I didn’t. I had a feeling that you’d be in trouble, but I didn’t know by who.” Hankyung pulled his helmet off of Heechul, giving him a kiss. “You should go change out of that shirt. We’ll burn it later.”
Walking with Sungmin to the Lee residence, Ryeowook kept his eyes downcast. He wanted nothing more than to tell Sungmin that Kyuhyun jumped him, but he knew that if he did tell, he’d be in an even critical state than today. Sighing, he bumped into Sungmin when the other stopped at an intersection.
“Are you okay, Wookie?” Sungmin asked, glancing over his shoulder at him.
“I’m okay, Min.” Smiling as genuinely as possible, Ryeowook grabbed Sungmin’s hand and pulled him across the street when no cars were coming.
“Take it easy, Wook. We don’t want to irritate your injuries.” Making the other slow down, Sungmin finally arrived at his house. “My parents will be away for a few days on a little vacation so it’ll be fine for you to stay here. When we get in, go straight to my room and lay down. I’ll get you something to eat.”
Pouting, Ryeowook nodded. “What if I’m not sleepy?”
“Well, you’re still staying in bed. I’m sorry, but I’ll keep you company while your bedridden.” Going inside, Ryeowook went straight to the stairs as Sungmin headed for the kitchen. “What do you want to eat, Wookie?”
“Anything is fine so long as it isn’t carrots.”
Turning with wide eyes, Sungmin frowned at him. “But carrots are good and good for you!”
Ryeowook pouted. "Please min.... I just want something simple." He said smiling softly, heading to the bedroom to lie down.
