Chapter Two:
Junhong whistled to himself as he walked down the street. It was just after school and he wanted to get to the park before anyone else. He wanted to see the other boy before the other kids got there and bullied him into leaving. His new friend, Moon Jongup, could talk to frogs. He thought it was cool as most teenagers into science-fiction would, but others thought they were freaks. He hopped on his skateboard, hurrying toward the far end of the schoolyard. He frowned when he noticed his friend waiting for him there.
“Hyung, I told you to wait at the park,” he said, placing a foot on the ground.
Jongup squirmed in his spot. “The park isn't open today. They have the place surrounded by yellow police tape and barred me from entering. I think there's something really wrong with it,” Jongup replied, close to tears. He shifted from foot to foot, twisting the hem of his shirt in his hands. “Junhong, what are we going to do? The frogs are going to be in danger!”
Junhong pursed his lips. “Let's go after dark tonight. We'll sneak them out of there and take them to another park. We'll make sure nothing happens to them, hyung.” He patted the older on the shoulder. “Cheer up, okay?”
Jongup nodded, smiling slightly before it faltered. He dropped his gaze to the ground, gnawing on his lower lip. “I-I should get going.”
Junhong looked behind him, glaring at seeing Jo Kwangmin walking up to them with his posse. “What do you want, Jo?”
Kwangmin smiled, the sickly sweetness of it made Junhong's stomach churn. “I just wanted to say hi to our froggy friend here.” He looked at Jongup, eyes growing cold. “Get lost, Frog Prince. I need to talk to Choi alone.”
Jongup nodded, giving Junhong a small smile before he left. He tripped on his way, blushing at the snickering behind his back. Tears pricked his eyes and he ran for it, heading in the direction of the deserted park.
Junhong faced Kwangmin, eyes dangerously dark. “What the hell do you want?”
Kwangmin smirked, fisting Junhong's shirt collar in his hands before slamming him into a nearby tree. “My twin wants to talk to you. Honestly, I don't see what he wants with a pathetic punk ass like you, but whatever my brother wants, he gets.” He shoved against Junhong hard, grinning at the defiant glare. “You have spirit. No wonder Youngmin loves you.”
“Get your hands off of me,” Junhong ground out. He wanted to hit this kid, but they were still on school property and he didn’t want to be suspended again.
Youngmin walked up to them, smiling at his brother. “Kwangmin, be a dear and keep hold of him for a second. I want to do something,” he stated, his caramel brown hair rustling in the slight breeze. He pulled out a small pocketknife, smiling at the way Junhong's eyes widened a fraction before he controlled himself. He walked closer, pulling the edge of Junhong's shirt up. “Hold this up for me, Kwangmin.”
Kwangmin held up the shirt, eyes never leaving Junhong's face. He always did as his older brother told him. And for that, he was alive and powerful. Had he dismissed Youngmin's words, he'd have been six feet under a long time ago. He noticed the look of panic in Junhong's eyes as the waistband of his jeans was lowered slightly, exposing his hip.
Youngmin smiled at him before he turned to carve his initials into Junhong's hip. He watched the blood trickle down the blade, standing up and looking at the other once he was done. Just as Junhong opened his mouth again, Youngmin laughed. “No one will hear you. You began screaming the moment my blade bit into your skin. You talk tough, but you're really nothing but a baby.” He patted Junhong's cheek. “Be a dear and stay quiet.”
Kwangmin watched as Youngmin touched Junhong's throat for a brief second, a small glowing ball forming to float in his twin's open palm. Youngmin closed his hand over it, smirking before he turned to walk away. Releasing Junhong, Kwangmin turned to follow. “Youngmin, you stole another person's voice.”
“It'll come in handy. I'll give it back to him, don't worry.” He walked to a payphone, inserting the proper coins before dialing a number. He placed his hand to his throat, testing his new-found voice before the person on the other line picked up. “Jongup?” he asked, Junhong's voice ringing through the line.
“Junhong! You're okay? I thought they'd hurt you! Where do you want to meet? I can come over to your house or we can go to our favorite cafe!” Jongup rambled, smile evident in his voice.
Youngmin grinned twirling the phone cord as he spoke. “Sorry, Jongup hyung, but I don't want to hang out with you. Not today and not ever. And don't worry about the frogs at the park. I made sure they've been given a good home with the science department. They'll be taken care of until our last semester. Then we'll dissect them.” Youngmin's eyes turned cold. “Oh, one other thing. I never want to speak with you again. You're nothing but a damned freak. You're starting to pick up a few of their traits. So, have a nice life, Frog Prince.”
Youngmin hung up, pulling his hand away from his throat. He smirked on his way back to Junhong, an idea striking him. He placed the glowing ball against his lips, sucking it into his mouth. He twisted Junhong's hair in his hand, pulling his head back before mashing their lips together. Kissing the other roughly, he inwardly grinned when Junhong didn’t attempt to fight him. Pulling back, he smiled, tracing a finger down his cheek.
Kwangmin was behind him, trying to look anyway but at them. “Youngmin, we need to get going. Dad wants us home before sundown because of the attacks that keep happening to kids.”
Youngmin's smile widened and for a minute, Junhong felt genuine fear as he shifted closer. “You'll be able to use your voice again in a few hours. Just don't waste your time with the frog lover. He'll hate you considering what you just told him.”
Junhong's eyes widened, but he snapped them shut when Youngmin tugged on his hair again. He felt teeth scrape his neck, undoubtedly leaving marks in their wake. He would have to wear a scarf or cover them with makeup. But that was for later. First, he had to find Jongup after the Jo twins let him go. He didn’t dare sigh when Youngmin finally released him. He only dropped his gaze and listened to them walk away. He looked up when they were long gone, fishing his phone from his pocket in time to see a text from Jongup.
He wants to know what happened? How am I going to tell him? I can't use my voice yet! Panic set in a little before Junhong thought about it. He typed a quick reply, stating that it wasn't him on the phone earlier. Jongup believed him for some reason and agreed to meet him at his house in ten minutes. Junhong replaced his phone, running for home shortly after. He didn’t waste any time, not wanting to run into the twins again. He didn’t know what they were, but he knew they weren't completely human.
He was panting by the time he reached his doorstep, nearly falling over at seeing Jongup perched on the railing. He straightened, lowering his gaze as he thought about what he would say. He opened his mouth, closing it after he realized he wasn't making any noise. He frowned, motioning for Jongup to follow him into the little complex. Once inside his own apartment, Junhong slumped onto the couch, looking up at Jongup with sorry eyes.
“I know it wasn't you,” Jongup began, sitting on the coffee table in front of the younger. He held up a hand at Junhong's raised brow. “I haven't been honest with you. Do you remember when we first met? It was two years ago and you were wondering how I somehow managed to speak to frogs? They understand me when I talk to them. People call me a freak for a reason.” He frowned, eyes darkening as he remembered back to that time. “It happened when I was seven. I was supposed to die. I had fallen into a pond and I couldn't swim. I remember crying out for help, but no one came. Instead, a swarm of frogs surrounded me and I thought I was insane. They ended up saving my life.”
Junhong opened his mouth, still no sound coming out. He frowned, pulling out his phone and typing his question to Jongup instead. He replaced his phone, waiting for the older to read the text. He was puzzled as to why his friend laughed at his question.
“How does that make me a freak?” Jongup chuckled. “Junhong, I’m not normal. I haven't been normal for almost a hundred years.” He laughed at Junhong's confusion. He leaned forward, locking gazes with the younger as he spoke his next words. “I'm immortal, Junhong. I’m turning ninety-two in a few weeks.”
Jongup sighed, standing and pacing around the room. He needed a way to make his friend believe him. If anything, this made him look as if he belonged in an insane asylum. He turned, looking at the fish tank against the far wall. Smiling, he walked over to it, reaching his hand in and fishing out a small frog. He took it to the coffee table and set it down, smiling at it.
“Hey, little one,” he murmured to it, running his index finger over the tiny frog's back. “We need to prove to Junhong that I can talk to you and that you understand me.” He glanced up at Junhong, looking back at the frog. “Preferably without freaking him out too much.”
Junhong watched, eyebrows knitted together as Jongup gave the frog instructions and the frog followed orders. He began to look on in awe, eyes never leaving his friend and the frog. Just when he was about to open his mouth, Jongup turned to him, frog settled in the palm of his hand. He smiled, the action causing Junhong to sink back into the cushions. He pulled out his phone, typing a short message to Jongup before he set his phone beside him.
Jongup looked at his phone, smile fading. “You want to know why I kept this from you?” He scoffed, tossing his phone onto the couch. “Junhong, I talk to frogs. And they understand me. How was I supposed to tell you? Hi, I’m Moon Jongup and I have the freakish ability to communicate with frogs? What would you have done?”
Junhong stood, trying to find his voice and will it to work. “I would have told you the truth. Friends don't keep secrets like this,” he said, voice barely above a whisper. He was surprised his voice didn’t waver. He felt his hands tremble and he fisted them into the hem of his shirt. “What else have you kept from me?”
Jongup walked to the fish tank, replacing the frog before turning to face Junhong again. He wasn't the kid Junhong thought he was. He had lied, had played the fool just to remain friends with the younger. And now, it was time to come clean. “The Jo twins are like me. They're immortal, too. Youngmin, he can capture sounds. And even steal a person's voice to make it his own.”
“How did you know he stole my voice?”
Jongup stared at Junhong, their eyes locked on each other's. “You've never called me the Frog Prince like they have.” He kept his gaze strong even as tears began to fill up his eyes. “Because we're friends. Friends don't call each other names with so much venom. But even while we joked, you never once ridiculed me for being different. If anything, you welcomed it.”
Junhong couldn't force himself to look away. Even though he had been lied to, Jongup was one of his only friends. He couldn't replace him in a million years and he didn’t want to even try. “Hyung,” he whispered, afraid to speak any louder. His throat was sore and he didn’t know if he could use his voice if he tried speaking any louder. He felt his heart break a little, the action causing him to stagger at the tear rolling down Jongup's cheek. He took the few steps closer to his friend, pulling him into a tight hug. “Don't cry, hyung. I don't hate you or anything. I felt a little betrayed, but I’m over it already. We're friends and we always will be.”
Jongup nodded, pulling Junhong closer to himself. “Thanks, Junhong. I didn’t mean to lie to you. I just didn’t know how you would react.”
Junhong patted the elder's hair, trying to soothe him. “Don't worry, hyung. I’m over it and it's a part of the past now.” He pulled away, wiping away Jongup's tears. “How about you stay the night tonight and we just hang out? I'll go get us something to eat and be back.”
He left before Jongup could really give him an answer. He hurried down the sidewalk, hands shoved deep into his pockets as he walked. The only sound he heard was the clicking of his shoes against the concrete. He frowned as his mind began to wander. Jongup lied to you, his mind whispered. He didn’t think you could handle to truth, so he lied. He kept you from knowing the most important part of himself. He's immortal and he can communicate with frogs. He's different from you. He'll outlive you and never even look it. People will slowly begin to think he's your son, then your grandson...
“Shut up!” he shouted, people passing by looking at him. He inhaled deeply, taking a couple more steps before he broke into a sprint. He kept running until his lungs burned and he couldn't breathe properly. He wondered if he could keep running forever, but he knew his legs would soon give out and he would collapse. Before that happened, he ran for their park, tripping over his feet as his steps became heavier. He dropped to his knees beside the pond, the frogs jumping around as if remembering who he was.
He sat there until the sun began to fall below the horizon, obscured by what few clouds were in the sky. He watched the water as it rippled, dancing with the slight breeze that accompanied him. This was his only comfort. The sound of the wind rustling the leaves, the water lapping at the shoreline, just out of reach. He closed his eye, letting the sounds overtake him before the light crunch of shoes caught his attention. It was only one pair, only one person coming closer. Opening his eyes, he stood, turning to face his guest. He wasn't shocked when he was met with both of the Jo twins.
“Look, Kwangmin, at what we've caught,” Youngmin said, lips pulling into a smile.
“I think we've found the toy you lost,” Kwangmin replied, smiling to match Youngmin perfectly.
Junhong glared at them, their matching smiles, their matching clothes. There was only one difference that he knew of to tell them apart. While Kwangmin's eyes still held a sliver of humanity, Youngmin's didn’t. There wasn't a shred of humanity left in his eyes. It was one of the reasons Junhong began to fear him. He took a step backward, trying to move slowly away without bringing too much attention to himself.
Youngmin's lips twitched, his eyes flicking to Junhong's feet before returning to his face. “Don't even think about trying to run away. I left you alone at school because there were too many witnesses.” He gestured around. “But the only ones here are us. And Kwangmin is on my side. Who's on yours? The frogs?”
Junhong felt his heart skip a beat as it dawned on him. He was alone with these two. He quickly realized that his phone wasn't with him. He had left it on his couch, where he had left Jongup. “Hyung will know I haven't come back yet. He'll know it was you.”
Youngmin's smile grew as he walked closer. He paced around Junhong in a slow circle. “But, he wont know where you are. If we took you with us, the poor little freak wouldn't know where to begin looking for you.”
Hearing Youngmin call his friend a freak, Junhong felt something in him begin to snap. “Jongup isn't a freak.” He looked at Youngmin, eyes dark as he spoke again. “Besides, he isn't any more of a freak than you are. No one who is normal can steal another person's voice like that.” He smiled at the expression on Youngmin's face. “People talk to their pets all the time. But no one can just steal someone else's voice and use it to call their best friends. If hyung is a freak, then you must be a total monster.”
Youngmin's smile faltered, it turning into one of the most menacing things Junhong had ever seen. “You bitch.” He lunged, hands finding nothing but air where Junhong was standing moments before. He blinked, whirling around, trying to find out where the other could have gone. “Where the hell are you? Come out from hiding, loser!”
“That's quite enough, Youngmin,” a voice stated.
Youngmin whipped around, eyes going wide and blood running cold. Junhong was there, held securely in the newcomer's arms. “H-hyung! I can explain!”
“You don't need to explain. You were trying to hurt this boy again.” He looked down at the kid in his arms, lowering his voice. “I think it's your time, little one.” He turned, focusing on the twins. “Leave this park. I have much to do.”
“Y-yes, Kangin hyung.” Youngmin glared at Junhong, the other's eyes wide as he clung to Kangin's shirt. He turned, nodding once to Kwangmin before the two of them disappeared.
Kangin looked down at Junhong before setting him on his feet. He tapped Junhong's forehead, the younger falling limp. “Sleep, Choi Junhong. When you awaken, you'll have a new life. It'll be a new beginning for you. You've befriended Jongup and I won't let him spend another century alone in this world.”
Junhong vaguely heard someone talking to him, but he was too far gone to really focus on the words. He felt his entire body growing heavier with each passing moment. He tried to move, but he couldn't make his limbs work. He heard another approach, fingers smoothing over his face before they were gone. Some kind of chant was spoken and he felt darkness consuming him. He felt the ground below him, the grass soft as it brushed against his skin. He wanted to ask what was happening, what kind of witchcraft had they just performed on him, but the words became a muddled mess in his throat.
“Yunho, you might not want to draw his power out too much. He's already going to be strong. The power has been dormant in him since his childhood. We need to leave before he wakes up,” Kangin murmured.
“You're right,” Yunho replied, reaching out and taking Kangin's hand. “He'll have hundreds of lifetimes to learn to control his abilities.” He frowned, brushing the back of Kangin's hand across his lips. “I would like to know how he managed to gain so many abilities in his short life. You can give immortality and take it away; I can find anyone I want and seal or unbind one's powers. This kid is young and has five distinct powers.”
Kangin smiled. “It's because he's meant to do something with those powers of his.” He looked out over the quiet park, feeling the wind blow through the trees. “I think I'll pay Zico a visit.”
Yunho stared at him, expression revealing his shock. “Zico? But you haven't spoken to him in three hundred years! Why all of a sudden?”
Staring down at Junhong's sleeping form, Kangin squeezed Yunho's hand. “Because this kid will bring him companionship. This boy, Junhong, will be Zico's partner in this never-ending life.”
Yunho stared down at Junhong with Kangin, trying to think of Zico possibly learning to love anyone but himself. He shuddered, tugging on Kangin's hand. “Let's go. He'll wake up soon. We should send Jongup over to get him.” Kangin nodded in agreement as they walked away, vanishing into the darkness as shadows.
Junhong groaned, eyes flashing open to see the blue ceiling of his room. He sat up, head spinning as he tried to remember what happened. All he could pull from his memory were images of the park, of Youngmin's face, and then everything went black. He frowned, trying to remember why Youngmin had looked so frightened. It wasn't because of him, he couldn't pull that reaction out of anyone. He rubbed his head, blinking as he got up. Going into his living room, he saw Jongup looking at the television. He opened his mouth, but Jongup spoke first.
“We need to talk,” he murmured, waiting for Junhong to come closer. He looked up, eyes dark in the dimly lit room. “You have to leave here. It won't be safe for you anymore.”
“What do you mean? I can't just leave. I have to go to school, I have to graduate and go to college. I can't leave everything behind at the drop of a hat.”
Jongup stood, body tense. “You don't get it, Junhong. You don't belong to this world anymore.”
Junhong felt himself pale, heart thumping hard in his chest. “Am I dead? Did Youngmin and Kwangmin kill me last night?”
Shaking his head, Jongup sighed. “No, but they wanted to. Kangin hyung saved you.” He looked at Junhong, eyes empty. “And then he changed you. You aren’t human anymore. He made you immortal and you'll really have to watch out for Youngmin. He doesn't like when Kangin saves his toys. The last time it happened, Youngmin went psycho and ended up killing anyone the person was friends with.”
Junhong shook his head, tears forming in his eyes. “I...I'm not human anymore?” He blinked, tears escaping to trickle down his cheeks. “I have to leave?”
“Yes.” Jongup pointed to the duffel bag by the door. “You're going somewhere far away. Yunho hyung and Kangin hyung know them personally. They can protect you from the Jo twins.”
Junhong shook his head. “What about you? Where are you going? Who's going to protect you?”
Jongup smiled sadly. “I'm moving in with someone. He's a bit of a hothead, but he'll keep me safe from them.”
Junhong looked at the floor as someone knocked on the door. Jongup told them to enter and the door opened, revealing two strangers. Looking up through his lashes, Junhong felt his breath catch in his throat. Kangin and Yunho.
“Hello, Junhong,” Yunho greeted him. His orange eyes seems to intensify in the dark room. “We're taking you to a friend of ours.” He grabbed the duffel bag from the floor, slinging the strap over his shoulder before holding his hand out to Junhong.
“What's going to happen to Jongup? He'll be okay, right?” he asked, not moving from his spot.
Kangin nodded, moving forward. “Jongup is going to Zico's place.” He half-smiled. “Although he can be a handful, Zico is one of the strongest allies we have right now. And you'll be moving in with the other strong allies we have.”
Junhong nodded, brushing away the tears as he mumbled a farewell to Jongup. He hugged him quickly, letting Yunho take his hand.
“We have to hurry,” Yunho said, looking at Kangin. “I'll take Junhong to Yongguk. You keep Jongup safe from the twins. They're on their way here.”
Kangin nodded. “We'll go straight to Zico's when we leave.” He looked at Jongup. “Go change into Junhong's clothes like we planned. And make sure you grab a hat.” At Junhong's puzzled look, Kangin smiled. “He wanted to lead them away from you. We'll leave the apartment at the same time. Yunho will take you through the emergency exit and we'll go through the main doors.”
Junhong nodded, watching Jongup disappear into his room. “Why are they afraid of you two? Last night when they saw you, they completely backed off.”
Yunho gave his hand a squeeze, releasing him only to walk over to plant a kiss on Kangin's cheek. He turned, smiling at Junhong's wide eyes. “We're together, yes, but that's beside the point. The twins fear us because we are the only two who can take everything away from them. Kangin can make them mortal again and I can seal away their powers.”
“So why haven't you made them mortal again?”
Kangin frowned. “Because they'd die. When immortality is taken away so quickly, they lose everything immortality has given them. Their powers-unless they had harbored dormant ones like you have-and the years given to them. As soon as the years are taken back from them, they'll die. In Jongup's case, he'd turn into a ninety-two year old man.”
Junhong fell quiet as Jongup returned, wearing a pair of his jeans and a dark sweatshirt. He had a baseball cap pulled on to cover the majority of his face. With his head down, Junhong had to admit that he resembled him quite a bit. Yunho took his hand, leading him away from everything he had come to know and love. He didn’t dare look back as Kangin and Jongup went into the other direction. He wanted to cry, but wouldn't let himself until he was with whoever Yongguk was and quietly tucked away into some corner of the house. They had reached the emergency exit, going out the window onto the fire escape.
“Going somewhere?” Kwangmin asked, pushing away from the wall. He looked at them, eyes sharp.
“Leave, Kwangmin,” Yunho said, tightening his grip on Junhong's hand.
“Only if you leave Junhong with me.”
“I won't do that. Get out of the way before I get angry.”
Kwangmin smirked. “You wouldn't use your power against me, hyung. You've been feeding into our every whim since Kangin created us. You wouldn't want to harm your precious stepsons, would you?”
Yunho glared at him, eyes flashing dangerously. “Move, Kwangmin, or I'll throw you over the edge.”
“You know better than anyone that it won't kill me.”
“Won't it?” Yunho's eyes bore into Kwangmin's, making the younger take an involuntary step back. He moved forward, dropping Junhong's hand as he did so. His hand whipped out, striking against Kwangmin's cheek. Yunho smirked at the panic stricken expression on the younger's face. “Good look surviving the fall with a mortal body.” Yunho turned back to Junhong, taking his hand again. “Let's go.”
Junhong nodded, looking over at Kwangmin. His cheek was bleeding, the single cut standing out against his flawless skin. He watched as he slowly began to heal itself. This must be one of the perks to being immortal. You heal fast. He turned in time to see Yunho leap over the edge, pulling him with him. He opened his mouth to scream, but it was too late. The ground was coming toward them fast. He closed his eyes, willing for a soft landing.
A jolt went through him, Yunho gasping and releasing his hand. Junhong felt his feet hit the ground, falling over onto his knees. He slowly opened his eyes, hands closing around soft grass and flowers. He looked up at Yunho, the elder staring at him in awe. He accepted the help up, Yunho releasing his hand and holding onto his shirtsleeve instead. Once safely inside the car, Junhong looked back over at where they landed. He had never noticed the small patch of grass before.
“Where are we going?” Junhong asked, turning back around.
“To Yongguk's place. It's not too far out there, but it'll be far enough that the twins won't come after you.” Yunho smiled. “Not that I would even be stupid enough to try to get passed their defenses.”
Junhong remained quiet for the rest of the ride, turning to stare blankly out of the window. He wondered what Jongup was doing, if he was okay. He frowned, knowing the answer to that without even having to think about it. Whoever Kangin hyung is, he's protecting Jongup hyung. If he's safe, then I can relax.
The car slowed, pulling into a long driveway. At the end stood a house with white siding, red shutters for the windows, and a seemingly never-ending field behind it. Junhong unfastened his seatbelt, opening the door when Yunho killed the engine. “This is where I’m going to be staying?” he asked, eyes wide with awe. He had to admit it was way better than his rundown apartment.
“Yes, this is where you'll be staying.” Yunho climbed out from behind the wheel and headed for the porch. He rapped his knuckles against the door, waiting patiently for an answer. Junhong joined him, looking around as the door opened. “Yongguk, I have a message from Kangin,” Yunho stated, getting straight to the point.
Yongguk took one look at Junhong before turning his attention back to Yunho. “No,” he grumbled, reaching out to slam the door.
Yunho frowned, hand whipping out to stop the door. “Look, we have a dilemma and this kid needs a place to stay.”
Sighing, Yongguk opened the door, crossing his arms over his chest. “I'm listening.”
“Kangin turned this kid immortal last night. He's trying to protect him from the Jo twins.” Yunho looked away, lowering his voice. “Like he did with Himchan.”
“We've already taken in a stray.” Yongguk nodded toward the kitchen. “Himchan found a regular kid last night. He's pretty banged up, so we decided to help him until he wants to leave.”
“I don't feel anyone here without a power.” Yunho closed his eyes, reaching out with his power, feeling around inside the house. Opening his eyes, he stared at Yongguk. “The kid you took in, he has a gift.”
Yongguk turned around just as Youngjae entered the room with Himchan and Daehyun. He stared at the younger, the blond's eyes going wide at seeing they had company. Without looking back at Yunho, Yongguk spoke, voice urgent. “Perhaps you should come inside, Yunho hyung. Bring the kid inside, too.”
Yunho ushered Junhong inside, following after him before closing the door. He looked at Youngjae, smiling kindly at him. “Hello, my name is Jung Yunho. I would like to run a test on you.”
