Chapter Three:
Sungmin paced back and forth, gnawing on one of his finger nails. He had received a call from T.O.P stating that he needed to come to Siwon’s clinic as soon as possible. His mind went directly to Kyuhyun and he worriedly rushed over.
“Sungmin, you’re going to ruin the floor,” Siwon murmured, glancing up from behind his desk. When the elder showed no signs of stopping, he got up and walked over. He guided Sungmin to a chair. “Sit. Don’t move until they get here.”
“I’m sorry, Siwon. I’m just worried. It’s probably nothing, but I have this weird feeling…” Sungmin explained. He smiled at the younger, but it didn’t reach his eyes.
Sungmin’s eyes kept straying to the clock above the door. Four minutes. Five minutes. He forced them away, trying to focus on something else. When he looked over, he saw Taeyang walking up the stairs to the clinic, helping Kyuhyun. The tears on his husband’s face made Sungmin’s heart nearly stop.
“Sungmin!” Ryeowook cried, hurrying to his friend. Shindong looked between them, not sure what was going on. “Sungmin, if I knew this would happen, I wouldn’t have left early.”
“Kyuhyun…” Sungmin walked over to him and Taeyang. “What happened to my precious Kyuhyun?”
“Zhoumi.”
He froze. After his brain processed the name and face, he glared at Ryeowook. “That bastard dared to touch my Kyuhyun?”
Ryeowook gulped, nodding once. He had only seen Sungmin this angry once before. It was when he first learned of Zhoumi hitting Kyuhyun. Although they had been broken up at the time, Sungmin still threatened Zhoumi. It seems like he hadn’t quite gotten it.
“I found him at the café,” Taeyang explained. “When I got there, he was the only one inside. I didn’t see anyone else.” He helped Kyuhyun sit in one of the chairs.
Sungmin walked over to him and kneeled, wrapping his arms protectively around the younger. “He had better hope our paths don’t cross.”
“Why?” Ryeowook wasn’t entirely sure he wanted to know the answer.
Sungmin turned steely eyes to him. “If I see him, I won’t hesitate to kill him. I told him not to hit Kyuhyun anymore, but he’s apparently too stupid to heed my warning.”
“Calm down, Sungmin,” Siwon interrupted. “First, let me make sure nothing is wrong with Kyuhyun. Would you please take him to the back?”
After Sungmin headed to the back with Kyuhyun, Taeyang looked at the clock. “I should be getting to your place, Siwon. Eunhyuk and Donghae were expecting me fifteen minutes ago.” Waving goodbye, he left the clinic, heading for Siwon and Yesung’s home.
“Ryeowook, why don’t you get Shindong home and settled for bed? I’ll call you when I get home tonight to fill you in.”
“Alright. Tell Sungmin that I said goodnight.”
Ryeowook soon left, carrying a sleepy Shindong with him. Siwon sighed, rubbing his temples. He knew that it would be a long while before Sungmin calmed down. He walked toward the back, stopping when he heard Sungmin and Kyuhyun talking.
“…followed me. I don’t know why, Sungmin, but he’s here. I want him gone forever,” Kyuhyun said. He rested his head on Sungmin’s shoulder.
“Don’t say that, Kyuhyun, or I might actually kill him when I see him.”
“Go ahead. I hate him.”
Before things got out of hand, Siwon walked in, stopping their conversation. “Let’s see if any damage was done.”
They were gathered around the table for supper when someone knocked on the door. Sighing, Junhyung placed his silverware beside his plate and stood. He went to the door to shoo away the person who interrupted their meal.
“Hello?” Junhyung asked, opening the door.
“Hi!” the person replied, a smile on his face. “I’m Leeteuk. My boyfriend and I just moved here with his brother and his brother’s husband. We’re your new neighbors!”
“Nice to meet you…?”
“Junnie, who’s at the door?” Doojoon asked, entering the room and stopping behind him.
“It’s our new neighbor. Yoonie, meet Leeteuk.”
“Nice to meet you!” Leeteuk smiled.
“Nice to meet you, too.” Doojoon extended his hand.
Leeteuk shook hands with him, but didn’t let go. He looked down at Doojoon’s hand. “You have good, manly hands. You should join the military!”
Doojoon forced a smile, finally tugging his hand free. “I was already in the military. My time was done last year, so I moved here with my husband.”
“Really? What a shame! The military would be a better place if you were still there. Anyway, my boyfriend, Kangin, bought me the house next door as a present.”
“How nice of him…” Junhyung wanted nothing more than to slam the door in this man’s face. Two squeals sounded from the dining room before Jinkyong and Yongsook came running. They giggled as they ran through the living room, bumping into everything.
“They’re so cute!” Leeteuk watched the two kids run around. “Heechul would absolutely love them!”
Junhyung turned to face his kids. “Yah, stop running before you-” CRASH! “-break something.” He sighed before turning back to Leeteuk. “Please excuse me.” Jinkyong and Yongsook laughed before running for the back door. Junhyung chased after them.
Doojoon laughed. “I guess I should have only gotten him one kid.” He turned to Leeteuk. “They were a surprise for him since he’s always wanted kids, but being with me meant he couldn’t have any of his own.”
“Although they don’t have your blood, it doesn’t make them any less yours.”
“That is very true.” Laughter drifted to the front. Doojoon rolled his eyes knowing that Junhyung was no longer interested in disciplining their kids. “I’d better go. If you need anything, feel free to stop by. One of us are always home.”
“Thanks.” Leeteuk smiled. “I’ll keep that in mind. Bye, neighbor!”
Doojoon shut the door before heading to the back yard. He stood on the porch watching as Junhyung chased Jinkyong and Yongsook around the yard. The three of them laughing made him happy. “Hey, come in and eat.”
Junhyung looked up at Doojoon, a smile on his face. “Alright. We’ll be in.” They were still giggling as he scooped the two kids into his arms and took them to the back porch.
After getting the kids settled into their beds, Junhyung and Doojoon sat together on the couch. The television was on, but muted. They were just enjoying the time together. Junhyung snuggled closer to Doojoon and laid his head against the elder’s chest.
“You seem as worn out as Jinkyong and Yongsook,” Doojoon whispered, placing a kiss against Junhyung’s temple.
“I am,” Junhyung yawned. He closed his eyes. “It’s the first time I’ve played with kids.”
Doojoon ran his fingers through Junhyung’s hair. “You seemed like you’ve done it before. It was like you played with thousands of kids and it was just second nature to act that way.”
The younger chuckled. “I wasn’t sure I would make a good parent, but I think I won’t be a bad one. It’s something that I still need to get used to.”
“Should we go to sleep?”
Junhyung looked at the clock. “It’s only nine-thirty.”
“You seem really worn out, Junnie.” When Doojoon didn’t get a response, he looked down at his husband. He smiled seeing Junhyung already asleep. “Sweet dreams, my Junnie.”
When Leeteuk entered the house, it was like walking into a museum. Nothing was moving, the windows were closed, the lights dimmed. He sighed, tugging his shoes off at the door and walking further into the living room. Kangin left a note on the table:
Hyung, went to store to buy beer. Be back later.
Frowning at his friend’s habit, he tossed the note in the trash before opening the freezer. He grabbed a frozen dinner and stuck it in the microwave, turning it on. He set a glass of water on the table and went to the window. He opened it to let the cool breeze circulate through the stuffy house.
“I don’t know if I’ll be able to go through with hurting them. Kangin will kill me if he finds out I’m having second thoughts about this,” Leeteuk said to himself. He walked to the microwave once it beeped and took out the container of food. “Bon appetite.”
The front door opened. “Hyung, you home?” It was Heechul.
“I’m in the kitchen.”
Heechul walked through the house, going straight to the kitchen. “Hyung, I don’t know if I can go through with this. I was passing by that little café not too long ago and the mood was all weird. There’s something else going on and we’re not causing it.”
“I don’t think I can do it either, but for a different reason than yours.”
“What’s your reason?” Heechul pulled out a chair and sat down at the small kitchen table.
“I went next door to Commander Yoon’s son’s house.” He shook his head. “I can’t do it, Heechul. I can’t hurt them.”
“You’ve got cold feet, too?” Hankyung interrupted, walking into the kitchen. “Heechul doesn’t think he can go through with it. Frankly, I don’t want to do it, but you know how Kangin gets.”
“So, what do we do?”
“We’ll act as if nothing’s wrong. As if we’re still working with Kangin.” Leeteuk looked at Heechul and then at Hankyung. “We’ll make up excuses to stall for time until we can sway Kangin and make him rethink everything.”
Hankyung and Heechul nodded. “When will we have to sway his mind? What’s the deadline?”
Leeteuk hesitated for a moment. “In one month we’re supposed to attack Yoon’s son’s love, right? We’ll have to do it before then.”
“Alright. We’ll head back to our place and come up with some plans. Next time Kangin steps out, come over and we’ll discuss it.”
Leeteuk nodded. “We have to be very careful. If he so much as thinks we’re going against him, he’ll cut us off and leave us in the middle of nowhere.”
“Let’s go home, Hankyung. If he catches us over here, he’ll want to know why we were here.” Heechul stood, stretching his arms above his head. “Call when he leaves to find a job tomorrow. We’ll meet elsewhere after tonight in case he decides to bug our houses.”
“Good deal. Goodnight, guys.” Leeteuk watched them cross the street and enter their house before he went back to his dinner. Sighing, he sat down and pulled out his wallet. He opened it to a picture of himself as a kid. “I’ll protect them,” he whispered to the man beside him in the picture, holding another small boy. “Alright, Uncle Yoon?”
